Take in example the question what the squareroot of -1 yields? Maybe, "who cares"??? When people started to think about imaginary numbers many people thought that, but today in electric calculations with AC current you can't even imagine how to handle it without the imaginary i.
I think comparing computer viruses with real life viruses reveals a lot similarities.
For the real life viruses the human body as defender is the "operating system" it tries to keep itself clean from evil attackers. But it doesn't bother to spend energies on harmless intruders. There a dozends of harmless bacterias even one or two harmless viruses, some of these even help the human body. Especially I remember one virus that attacks and spreads only through "unwanted" bacterias. This virus is the human bodies friend, on we all have tousends if not millions of this one on our body.
If an intruder seems to be harmfull your body starts to attack it, it's a common trick for viruses/bacteria to trojan themselfs into the human body, in the beginning they are nice and cute and after some time if they are strong enough they suddendly start to mean, salmonella is such a bakteria, or AIDS that lives quitly and hidden over 10 years or more. BTW, there some brand new cures in evalation building on this knowledge, "telling" the human body early that this introdur is evil.
So each virus goes a small path between being tolerated, survive/spreading itself and how much attention it will receive. Also a virus doesn't gain anything if it's host dies, in history there were viruses which completly killed a whole population (I think there is some proof that it happened to some bird kinds), and at the end the virus dies himself.
Okay what has it to do with computer viruses? Take in example the "parityboot" virus in our capital city (Vienna) this virus was spread every some years ago, why? Because it didn't destroy any data, yes the paritity boot errors were nasty if you didn't know the virus and that it was the cuase, but once you knew it you just had to ignore that message and everything was fine. People knew it. However to completly clean it from a companies net required to scan all discs, that times the main medium, which of course would cost quite an amount and time, so many simply chosed to live with that virus, it was even funny in some kind. Same as the old 'gimma a cookie' virus everybody found it so cute you was even happy if you got it.
However the meaner a virus the harder it counter attacks. If in example I know I've a virus that bombs some IP address I'll think yes I'll clean it, as soon I've time, maybe tomorrow. If I know it might delete my data I want it removed from my harddisk NOW! If I know it sends confidential data to my competitors/costumers I would consider completly wiping all infected harddisks. A virus beeing that mean,ie by altering files it will have no spreading, people will put all afforts in killing it quickly.
BTW: how many viruses for linux exist?;o) And please don't come me with because nobody uses it. It's because all the programs run in an isolated sandbox by default, and have no possiblity to alter any sytem files.
I had one of these it was called 'ParityBoot Virus', and made a parity boot error once in a time during a boot but didn't destroy anything, even changing rams didn't help. I checked everything the whole hardward insideout, until after some days the error "spread" over to a friends computer, then I finally knew where to look:o)
My experience is it depends on the encoding. A bitrate of 96k I do hear a difference between the CD player. However if encoded with variable bitrate I wasn't able to hear the difference on my home system with my layman ears. The mp3 you get usally from napster are most times pretty bad encoded, if you happen to have the cd also you hear a real difference on most stuff you get. Yes it sounds crazy but as long I didn't have an encoder or worried about looking for one, I simply downloaded the mp3 for songs I bought. In this case the download was actually 100% legal:o)
Just thought about it, we could even create a "gateway" to the current standard namespace, like freenames.org or so, that's would be a machine that gets resolving requests and forwards it to the free namespace...

How I understood rockets today you've a tank full of hydrogen and a tank full of oxigen. Highly compressed and kept cold. On start you start burning up the hydrogen with the oxygen leaving behind H20. Water.
Now with a nuclear core, I would have water already stored in my rocket? And with it I heat it up to steam to leave it behind? Or did I undestood false? But why then should be storing water in the rocket more effective than storing it as hydrogen-oxygen tanks, and why heating it up with a nuclear core is more effective than simply holding a match to the hydrogen-oxygen mixture.

You mismatched something, you can license the same software under GPL and non-GPL, however of course as common logic implies you can't give out -EXCLUSIVE- licenses after you gave it out under the GPL.
Second thing patches you receive under the GPL, are also GPL and thus NOT owned by you, so you cannot take over by others improved version of the GPL into you're property licenesed version. Whis is perfect in the sense of the license.

It's a mixture between java and c. Taking the basic structure of java and bending it with c functionality and linkable. The Dtone compiler generates then a classic c files which can be compiled across platforms by any standard c compiler.

Might to be stupid, but designing an flexible, self changing cell logics, doing tasks, might not be easy. I know the today CPU architecture (called Neumann or?) is pretty much already taken as the wisdoms last words, it's not. But developing alternatives is fundamental research, and getting money (and brains) for this is difficult:)

I'm wondering how they could 'force' their people to fill out support reguests. Theres no way in your employment contract that requirs you to do illegal actions. Especially in general employment laws there is is a special exception for this case. I refused to my chief to deinstall any software behind their backs, as this would be illegal, I'm not doing such because they didn't pay their licenses, it mad them mad, but didn't have further consequences of cource.
But to one thing I admit, as I see it in the U.S. economy and laws are loosing base, and are moving to an end in themselfs. Does anybody remember what economy is for? Why companies are there? What the sense of laws is? What `money' actually is?

But when I hear Bush arguing why the US as only western nation didn't sign the global effort to reduce the global carbondioxide exhaust, and thus try to hinder possible climate hazzards. It was something like "Our economy can't affort this now", hmm so what that economy then good for? If the decission is we want TODAY cover our needs better not caring about tommorow or the next 40 years we're fucking our children.
If a man sues a company and get billions! of dollars PERSONALLY, because they failed to say smoking can cause cancer I think maybe laws failed. A single person suddendly flipping over to the richest mens of the world because of a lawsuit. Laws should be also FOR the community, not working against them, creating a small superwealth top. Wouldn't it be much better to sentence them to have to pay billions to cancer research instead?
