  1. Re:Other GPL games on OpenQuartz: A GPLed 3D Shooter · · Score: 1

First off, hundreds of developers is silly, most gaming companies have less than 20.

Anyway, the Linux kernel has also been a lot of work, and had much more developers than any game that I know of. The problem with games is that it's much more unclear what the goals are. Kernels should be fast, reliable, and support all kinds of hardware, but what's the goal of a game? People will never reach any kind of consensus.

However, a GPLed 3d engine (ala quake3) might work a lot better as an open source project.

You're forgetting that this protection-scheme won't be here anytime soon either. Even in the worst case, it'll take at least five years before you can't get unprotected videocards anymore.

By that time, according to Moore's Law, harddisks will have 7,5 times the bandwidth they have today. Combined with simple, real-time compression, that should be enough for HDTV.

  8. Re:for the nth time, copyright violation != steali on Aimster Seeks Protection From RIAA Demands · · Score: 1

Like it or not, the old model is dead. You cannot prevent people from replicating digital content. Companies can lobby for laws to outlaw it, they can shutdown a couple of filesharing services, but that's about it. They're basically powerless. There are only two groups who buy music nowadays: People that are unable to procure music in other ways (because they are ignorant or find napster / irc et al. too hard too use), and people who find it immoral to copy music without paying for it. As increasingly more people learn to work with computers, the first group will get smaller and smaller. The second group remains. But this second group essentially pays money voluntarily. Unfortunately, of that money only 5% or so goes to the artists. I propose a new model, based on charity. Artists distribute music at very low costs on the internet. People spread the music files around using peer-to-peer services, burning cds and swapping them, etc. When they really like an artist, they will send him money, if they're moral. If they're not, they won't, (but then they probably weren't spending money on music anyway). If you were an artist, what would you prefer? Getting a RIAA paycheck every month, saying: this month 4000 people bought your $15 cd. Here's your 5%: $3000,- Or would you prefer to get 250 cards, e-cards, and letters every month, saying things like: "You're the greatest band ever! I love you guys, your new song roxxx! Here's $10, I really wish I could afford more...

I don't, but I do expect (and, usually, find) some coherence in the articles that appear on /. If a story's not having something to do with either technology or geek culture is no reason for refusing it, then what is?

  11. Re:Actually no....It is more relevant than the Mat on Review: Memento · · Score: 1

Well, OK, could /. please stop asking you to review movies? If Memento is a geek culture movie, it's only because it's a puzzle movie. It's intellectually challenging (at least the first thirty minutes) and geeks like intellectual challenges. Even geeks who dislike art can appreciate the logical puzzles in this movie. But that's not really a good reason to review it. Memento doesn't raise any deep philosophical questions, especially compared to The Matrix (even if these questions were old ones). You obviously haven't seen it...

  12. Re:Bloated Code,Yes! on When Your Hardware Isn't Obsolete Soon Enough · · Score: 1

This is total nonsense. If you extend a class, your new class will definitely NOT copy the members in the base class. Non-object-oriented code will sooner lead to bloated code, since people will copy and paste functions instead of using reusable methods. Look at the size of java class files: they're VERY SMALL. A couple of KB at the most. Bloated code is created by bad programmers (especially when they forget to turn off debugging information).

  13. Not another review... on Review: Memento · · Score: 1

Please, can't Katz post movie reviews on IMDB? I mean, it's not like Memento has anything to do with technology geek culture, like The Matrix. Anyway, for those of you who haven't seen it, it's basically a puzzle movie. If you like puzzles, you'll love this one. For me, I'd sum it up like this: Clever idea, decent execution, but nothing more than that. 6/10.

  14. Language related stuff on What Isn't on the Internet? · · Score: 1

I think there's a big shortage in spoken texts on the internet. Most sound fragments on the internet is either music or radio. It's very difficult to find, for instance, recordings of articles or short stories, together with the original text, especially in foreign languages. Such recordings are immensely useful when learning a new language. Another thing that doesn't seem to exist is a multilingual bookstore with a decent collection of books, which also ships worldwide.
