This was inevitable. As competition increased and the open-source movement started to rattle the cage of redmond MS turns to the same old tactics - bullying. It's not that they can't license their product, and it's not that they want to make sure that those that use their product are complying. It's the simple fact is that they need to stop using tactics that alienate their user base. They've decided to halt the licensing of W95/98 in order to push corps, businesses, Universities, etc into buying W2K and soon XP. Next they'll be muscling people to use their ASP/.NET. Why bother. If your forced to upgrade all your systems eventually, use a system that gives you excellent support, access to source, and the ability to configure the system the way you need it without worrying about endless patches, security holes, and exorbinant costs. Time for Linux, Solaris, BSD... anything but the bottomless pit called MS.
I bought SuSE 7.1 about a week ago. It uses kernel 2.4 and glibc2.2. I started with Corel and that lasted less than a month (take about buggy), then I switched to Mandrake 7.1 and it was also buggy (as far as using none mdk base rpm's and Man 7.1's strange choice of directory layout, but I learned alot while using it. But after receiving a response from Andre Hedrick (the ide guy - for linux devel) I tried the new SuSE release. I have had little proplems with SuSE 7.1, a little hassles with Nvidia GF2-MX (though it does have some native support for it in this version). I took care of that problem by dl'ing the detonator rpm's for the suse71 distro, followed the instructions and a few edits to the xf86config file, ran the command "switch2nvidia_glx" and no prob. Frankly, SuSE did a very nice job for 1st release with the new kernel. I'm happy I made the switch to SuSE.
Ya right, Linus is killing Linux. Like what he's an over controlling megalomaniac or something. I'm sorry, I got confused I thought I was talking about Bill Gates for a second there.
On the subject of Bill Gates Who cut this reporters/authors check. Or, maybe it's the editor of the publication that's on the dole and this guy is just trying to keep his job by spewing out whatever FUD he's told to.
i emailed SuSE about a pre-order, and this is their reply:
"I do apologize but at the present moment, we are currently not taking any
pre-orders. I realize that our press release said it will be available
shortly, due to unexpected circumstances that may happen, there might be
delays. Thus, we want to play it safe and not start taking orders just
yet.
Please contact us in a week to see if we are taking pre-orders.
I apologize for the inconvenience".
Apparently the marketing department got a little carried away.
Three e-business publications have had the sale of Corel-linux on their radar screens. Reporting that Corel has been shopping around for a buyer for a few months now. They had the makings of a decent distro, but with all the financial woes they've encountered it has been laying fallow.
I started with their distro, and it had some problems. They offered an upgrade to version 2.0 on thier web-site for about $5.00 plus shipping. I went for it. 3 months after the debit to my account I got a notice that it had been processed. 2 months after that it arrived, in German and it was version 1.0. I quickly moved to an RH based distro and am much happier.
is the fact that I'm an R.N. and often have to work over-night shifts. I often record a few programs over the week to view when I'm at home. This would totally mess me up as far as following any programs that I might want to watch but work while they're on air (like farscape, X-files, Nypd blue to name some). The other person that mentioned that "this might be all good" has a point. I already spend less time watching the boob-tube, I supplemented the time with my wife and the computer. If this is enacted as the article suggests, then what's the point. So many corporations are trying to pull the M$ stunt of trying to control all aspects of our lives for a profit. I honestly think that they think the majority of Americans (and others around the world) are completely mindless and devoid of the ability to find alternative means of spending their time. If this is true, they're in for a rude awaking.
Of the 3 options that might be taken by manufacturers, a) T.x bounces the proposal, b) manufacturers use an imcomplete standard (unlikely), c) implememt it but leave it inactive - of the latter. Say it's left inactive. And then some creative hack figures out the activation key/process. Would it be possible for someone to essentially hold the data hostage by locking down the HDD and then ransoming the key. I realize that the security issue has been addressed, somewhat relating to securing the data for the entitled user. My concern is there is always a way around things and this my lead to new avenues of extortion by locking out the entitled user by certain nefarious individuals.
