  1. Re:Read Anti-online's coverage... on Crackers Take Down FBI Web Servers · · Score: 2

Actually, I know for a fact that #Pascal has a lot to do with cracking...

about a month ago, WSU (http://www.wsu.edu)'s webserver *was* cracked. If you were logged on when the instigating party was, you usually got a message flooding your terminal that said "The Matrix Has you" and at one point people were getting ads for the channel #Pascal. They did a fairly nice job... ended up getting the webAdmins to make the web server, our UNIX server, and our mail server serve only local (WSUNet, ResNet and DialUp) users.

If you spend five minutes in #Pascal, you will learn that it *does* have to do with cracking...

Basically, the point is that they use PASCAL to 'program' cracks, and these cracks *work*. In a few moments here, another message will be posted with a few links.

*shrug* Maybe you should spend a little time in the channels before you infer that you know of their content.

The person that posted the original was an AC, they start out with a 0... a moderator used one of their points to demote this blatant flame (or trolling) down to -1.

The person that posted the *response* was NOT an AC, but rather a logged-in user. They start out at 1, and have not been moderated down. That's not FUD, it's life. If you want to post as an AC, you take the slack.

As far as Slashdot being unavailable for "several hours", I've NEVER had that problem. Perhaps it's *your* bandwidth that's the problem and not Slashdot.

If MS' servers are so much better than Slashdot's (by the way that's *plural* serverS for MS), why is Hotmail consistently slow? Why do I periodically (and more consistently) get "Connection Reset" or something just as effective?

Slashdot is NOT a multi-billion dollar company with a crapload of servers hosting their extensive website(s). Why expect the same performance? Microsoft uses (for the most part) ASP for their website design, along with a lot of JavaScript nested in there. Slashdot is built highly off of cgi and HTML. Comparing the two is like (ahem) comparing apples to oranges; they're both fruit but have very different tastes and nutrients.

  3. Re:No cable modems/DSL in Seattle! Monopolies = ba on America's Most Wired Cities and Towns · · Score: 1

TCI also won't add new cable channels to their 'regular' service, they want you to buy Digital Cable. There are only few small suburban cities (Edmonds, for example) with services that haven't yet been bought out by TCI. Viacom died a while ago, and now TCI's services are really lacking from slightly south of Seattle on up through the city.

In places where they *used* to receive service from Viacom, they have at least 25% more cable channels (than those that have been TCI longer, i.e. the city and some suburbs) at the same rate. If you want good cable, go live in a dorm at the UW: of course then you get *local* phone service to everywhere from Everett down to Tacoma, on the downside you have to deal with K20 and their networks.

TCI brags that they offer 'cable modems', but it's rare (as you've pointed out). I know that the cable company in Edmonds offers normal ISP services (at a discounted rate to cable customers), but I doubt any cable modem services.

You don't have a choice as to who your cable provider is (it's either TCI or by chance something like Edmonds), and in most cases you can only choose your long distance provider.

If you don't go to the UW, chances are your speed will only get up to 56k... unless you live close to the phone hub, then you're lucky.

When I move *back* to Seattle (3 years), I sure hope things have changed. Until then, I'll live in the middle of nowhere (Pullman) connected to a T1 through my apartment as an ISP, and work at the University using their T3s (though K20 has horribly routed service).

Actually, on their front page, they do link to slashdot.org to the right of the "all slashdot news" stuff. They do the same thing for freshmeat and Linux Week... tho they could be a BIT more clear about where the news is coming from, and how to get there.

I love it! I've been in a Java/C++ argument before myself on a mailing list, and we ended up with "real women use C++"... guess we just never took it this far, a large portion of the people on the list work for MS.

I don't think my dream vacation would be a beach house... it's so useless. This sounds more like a promotional thing than something seriously for geeks.
