But getting a domain name and a dedicated site was still a good idea. Haha! This comment just got bitchslapped, me thinks. Went from +4 to 0 within about 1 minute, all of them 'Troll' mods. Not to mention the fact that it keeps getting modded up. I doubt a community as one sided as slashdot is has a problem deciding whether Seth is spouting FUD or not... especially considering even the "MS Windows is great" trolls hate michael when they're writing non-trolling posts. Let's see if this one goes down in history as the +1000 mods post...;)
Microsoft's claim is completely ungrounded - nothing written by a third-party can take away Microsoft's intellectual property rights. But it makes a good (read: confusing to the general public) justification for preventing others from interoperating with their software.
And you're getting your legal advice from....???
(Yes, I like making fun of michael. After all, he hatesus!)
A similar lawsuit was brought against WorldNetDaily.com just recently, but to the tune of $165 million dollars. Of course, it wasn't an aquarium shop, it was a former US Presidential candidate's buddy (obviously well connected) bringing the suit against the site. And WND was just reporting on a story they had discovered.
I submitted this as a story back when it first came out, but Slashdot janitors, being the liberal fascists that they sometimes are, rejected it - and my guess is simply because WND is considered a "conservative" website. I'd say my comments above scream "YRO!" more than a dispute between disgruntled customers of an aquarium store and the owner of said store.
Could it be that Linux, in its current state is simply too beefy for a lightweight application like a PDA?
How do you figure that? The kernel source is freely available, most apps for Linux have source code readily and freely available, and configuration is based solely upon the drivers you wish to install. WindowsCE has none of these pluses as everything is 'bundled' for "ease and stability!" For any enterprising company, all it takes is some work to trim the size of Linux to a 'bare-bones' OS for a PDA.
The reason there isn't spyware for Linux (that I know of) is because no one is being paid to put out software for it (in general). Most of the programs downloadable for Linux are all OpenSource, and not shareware. The corporate mentality of Linux is different, because companies selling Linux products are usually selling to businesses, not individual consumers. Thus, the "hard sell" is needed more often than not, and not some crappy spyware program.

It's even been in documentaries how little Palestinian children are instructed that killing an Israeli will get you to heaven, via a popular kid's show over there.
I'm as guilty as the next guy about not always listening to elders, but this kid comes across as knowing all these wonderful facts are hardened fast truths from the stuff he read in the "Hippies Monthly Journal" or something.
And please explain why after years of tolerating suicide bombing after suicide bombing of innocent Israeli's, that Israel is somehow wrong for beating the shit out of their enemies??? Do you want to localize this conflict to 50 years? Let's localize this to another setting: Missionaries in Africa spread Christianity. Local tribesmen don't like it, and go over and rape the woman of the missionary family. Is that missionary supposed to bend over and say: "Here, please do me next?" Is that family supposed to willing give up their God-given right to life, just because some group hates them with a passion? I think not. You obviously know nothing of the true history of the Arabic/Isreali(Jewish) conflict, do you? Both sides claim Abraham (from the Genesis account in the Bible) as their forefather, except he had two sons, one out of wedlock, one with his wife... It's commonly accepted his truly first-born, Ishmael (bloodline wise from Abraham) is the ancestor of all Arabic peoples, whereas the "God-appointed" heir of all of God's promises to Abraham came through the second-born son, Isaac, the ancestor of the Jews.
No, I'm afraid this conflict has been going on for thousands of years, not just 50. You're localizing this current conflict to a narrow space of fifty years, when in reality, you should be taking the whole thing in the proper context of why the Arabs hate the Jews so much (Hint: They (the Jews) "stole" the God-given birthright, so to speak, from the Arabs - a big generalization of all of the details, but close enough without writing another 30 pages of info).

As a young 17yr old you should probably be doing a little more learning about the world at large, the good, the bad, and the ugly about it. Ever wonder why you've heard the phrase: "Respect your elders."? It's because they've lived through more, learned more, and seen more than you have, and therefore, have a much better insight into how the world works. Please don't presume to have all the answers at this stage of life.
You do remember the events of Sept 11, 2001, correct? Good. 19 psycho's gave their lives to kill thousands of people...probably even more than a handful of people that could've sympathized with their struggle. Random acts of destruction do absolutely nothing to "build up" an ideology or a nation, for that matter. Just look at the death rates for Palestinians vs Isreali's... sure the suicide bombers take out a few people or more with each suicide, but so many more die in Isreal's retaliation against those random attacks that it makes suicide absolutely pointless! Statistically, the Arabs get their butts kicked every time they've tried to beat on Isreal. It would behoove them to rethink their strategies about how best to conquer their enemy, because guranteeing the loss of one "soldier" with every suicide attack is a pretty poor tactical, and strategic, decision when trying to run a country. In fact, Japan sent hundreds of kamikaze pilots towards American warships late in World War II, and look what that got 'em: Two nukes that killed hundres of thousands of people.
But then again, the Islamic nations aren't interested in co-existence and peace, just the complete irradication of the Jews. Hmmm... Sounds a lot like Hitler, doesn't it? And that regime didn't go over too well with the rest of the world...
I tend to agree with you, but remember, a company needs to make a decision here. They need to sort through the legality of it all because it is a big decision. They need to hire a lawyer to help them do this quite often.
My fiancee, who is a first year law student, knows for a fact that lawyers willing to work part-time at a company reviewing these sorts of legal matters still make anywhere from $40k-$70k per year - for part-time work! It's not completely free, unfortunately.:(
I read Forbes all the time. I have a subscription to it, after all.
Basically, understand that every part of a business is considered an asset, so logically, software is an asset of a company. So like the previous guy said, when Forbes talks about Linux not being "free," they mean that just like any software, there are add-ons, customizations, and DBA's that all need to be purchased and hired to implement and support the software, be it Linux or otherwise.
What's notable is that Merril Lynch must have found it much more cost effective to switch from their previous software to Linux for certain tasks. Considering they are a top securities firm, I'm sure the money factor was analyzed much more closely and accurately than the "principal of the thing" or "useability" would have been in a more IT related company.
I too like the Open Office 641 release very much. Although I have seen some really goofy conversion between OO and MSWord2k when using tables in a Word document.
OO runs nearly as quickly on Windows once you get it up and going, although because it's Java, some of the menu's and other 'buttons' are sluggish to respond.
But Mandrake 8.2 - WOW! Open Office 641 is included as an installable component in the 3 CD ISO set that you can download for free, and it is quick! Once loaded in KDE 2.2.2, it just seems to fly - faster than MS Word on my particular machine (dual-boot Win2k/Mandrake8.2 AMD Duron @986MHz and 256MB 133SDRAM). Given the cross-platform compatibility, I'm going to be using OO at home from here on out for all of my 'Office' needs.
Now I know not all of you have a good broadband connection to download Mandrake 8.2, but it's definitely a stable improvement upon the 8.1 release.
Now the only hurdle left is convincing people that don't play complex DirectX video games that Linux does everything for them and more when properly configured (which took me only 2 hours - Win2k took 4hrs BTW, and I've been using it longer than Linux).
I hate to sound like a buzzworthy press release, but I've been messing around with Linux long enough to see how annoying it can be. Fortunately, I finally have found a Linux desktop I can recommend to my non-computer literate friends. (And if I buy the gaming version, maybe I can convert my fiancee to Linux, OO, and The Sims on Linux;) ).
