    1998 was the year I first saw Linux deployed in a very conservative investment bank. Officially.

    As a matter of fact I ran Linux in a private company for 2 years prior to that.

    Today Linux in the corporate world is a reality. All serious companies have now a Linux policy (normally replacing UNIX servers, but not only that) and nobody will raise eye brows if a Linux solution is suggested for a particular problem.

    So the article was bang in the money and the joke is on you.

    People also don't like crappy UI's, How do you know? It is not like people have much choice in the amtter really. Where are you usability studies regarding this? Which group of people are you talking about? Hod do you define "crappy"? Of the cuff statements like the one above just show it is easy to talk without putting enough thought to the matter.

    programs with really absurd/dorky names that make no sense to anyone but nerds who get the inside joke (if there even is one) YouTube, Yahoo!, MySpace, Flickr, HotMail, Google, Acrobat, Flash,

    Honestly, I'd say it's about 100x's more likely that OSX gains significant ground to the point where it makes sense for apple to source out OSX to third party system builders than it would that Linux gains any significant headground. You know, unless the Linux community understands and finally makes strides to make Linux a) look like a program you would actually go out and spend your hard earned money on and b) make the UI and naming convention on the included software logical. There is nothing logical about any UI. Anybody claiming this is misinformed, all arrangements in a UI are completely arbitrary and use and custom popularize certain ways to do things. Put different desktops in front of complete neophytes and you would be surprised.

    And in some cases a matter of compliance with the law, I would be very surprised if they are not breaking EU or UK law... An enterprising solicitor will get them by the short hairy ones.

    I have been to Namibia several times. You don't want a laptop in the Namib desert or in Ethosa. Most likely it will end broken or malfunction due to sand or humidity. I lost 2 laptops (this was some time ago I have to say) due to the rigors that have to be endured during transportation (mostly dirt roads, well serviced, but still is not the same, and this is when you are in a road, elephants and rhinos di not stick to roads, you know?).

    And what for anyway? Every day or 2 you will touch base in town, all the major ones (Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Windhoek, etc) have Internet cafes all around the place (you are not the first person backpacking there, honest). Transcribe your novel there and save your pictures to a more permanent medium than your massive memory cards.

    That means that people paying attention to them do not see the company as a worthwhile investment anymore. These are the people beting their money and their client's money on this....

    No matter if the same sods have lost 40% of the value of the company and completely depleted the once famous cash reserves at the same time. Oh wait, but that was during the last six years. If the do well one quarter everything is hunky dory.

    Well, my company provides space and a small allowance for us to organize off-work activities. They get no tax breaks for that.

    It also organizes charity work (they don't donate necessarily) providing facilities and equipment while they are unused. NO tax breaks there neither.

    In the ultra-cynical times we live I know all the "reasons" that a cynic will argue about why the above activities are to enhance profitability.

    I know better: I know some of the people supporting these activities, they are really nice and principled and am sure when they have these ideas they were not looking at the balance sheet.

    The shareholders are the owners of the company, the company works for them by providing goods and/or services to paying costumers. Shareholders risk their money in the expectation that the company will provide such a good service that they will get a better return on their investment than if they would leave the money in a bank account.

    Without servicing costumers the shareholders have nothing but a piece of paper with little value (look at SCO for example).

    How can you possibly claim with a straight face that the real costumers are the shareholders? It is truw that a company has to please both groups of people, but confusing one with the other is basic ignorance. Please never go into business....

    People that matter (investors, fund managers) have ran away from MS as an investment because it is clearly a troubled company.

    The share price drop of 40% since Ballmer took over says all what we need to know about how people that matter feel about MS losing "pocket change".

    - Has their share price fallen 40% since 2000 and remained pretty flat? (compare with exponential raise of Google's).
    - Do they need to spend in an also ran, depleting badly their dwindling cash reserves?

    People actually evaluating the success of the company where it matters (buying shares for their investment funds) ahve very mixed feelings about the company, which is reflected in the share price.

    All the quotes you provide, although good news for the monopolist, are not placating all fund managers out there.

    The machine does not have any obvious means to install anything but what is in Xandros repositories.

    By making sure they pissed of the EU market.

    In the UK they are far below expected sale of the gadget and price cuts are imminent.

    They got wrong the pricing (as they did in the US) and they are underestimating the EU consumer, which in general is more informed about mobile telephony than their counterparts in the US.

    And the reason Apple has not approached Asia at all is that any lowly gadget in Japan, Korea or China offers better value for many.
