you might care if dozens, hundreds or thousands of other users at your work also get tons of spam, particularly when all of that spam significantly cuts into your bandwidth

Indeed, but do you think XO, either now or ever, gives a flying fuck if spam reaches my email server? Either way (client side or at my email server), my bandwidth and processing power is still used.

What you missed in the parent post is that false-positives are unacceptable in a corporate environment. The cost of delivering any arbitrary number of spam messages is less than the cost of blocking one single legitimate message.

I like spam. After years of getting only an email or two a week, I was quite pleased when I started getting spam. Any time I get a new email account, the first thing I do is post to the newsgroups. Within days I can feel 'special' because of all the email I receive!

  5. Speaking of thinking too much . . . on Summary Of Symposium On Spiritual Machines · · Score: 1

John Koza, drawing from examples in Genetic programming, said that while human-competitive results by machines are certainly possible (e.g. the evolution of previously patented circuit designs), much more computational power is needed to evolve the equivalent of a human mind.

Alright, the discussion on this posting is out of hand. Apparently I'm cutting out everyone who lacks a sense of humor.

Nonetheless, I have to add my thoughts on the above sentence. While I think John is right, he and everyone else there seems to be overlooking one huge factor in the whole equation. Just like the claim that the functionality of an operating system is "fixed", so too is the claim that the functionality of the human brain is constant.

Consequently, everyday as our collective knowledge grows, so too does the requirements for an "intelligent" machine. So while it may take 30 years to create an intelligent machine by today's standard, how will that "intelligence" compare to the human mind then?

  6. Re:OpenBSD, come in from the cold. on FreeBSD 4.0 Released · · Score: 1

Why would you want that? Just out of curiosity. Sure, FreeBSD may have "sprouted" some security enhancements, but as you allude to, by no means is it on par with OpenBSD.

This difference is, of course, the result of the distributions being separated. Start combining them, sacrifices will be made. Just look at something like RedHat. Version 6 is becoming very Windows-esque in its size. Why is it so big? RedHat wants to market it to everyone, just like Windows. Go figure.

The point is specializing. Focus on one thing, you'll do it quite well, focus on several things, you won't do any of them nearly as well. I personally enjoy having the three distros. FreeBSD for my workstation, NetBSD on my old crappy hardware, and OpenBSD keeping the nasty world out. (Besides, I have no problems with an excuse to keep another computer around)

  7. My Musical Progression on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

I've always kept a strict morning playlist followed by a flexible afternoon playlist.

Mornings consist of The Wall, Darkside of the Moon, Zeppelin Box Set, Steve Miller Greatest Hits, some CCR, and some Rolling Stones.

This gets me halfway through the afternoon, at which time I need some motivation. So then comes NIN (The Fragile), KoRn, Limp Biskit, Kid Rock, and some new stuff.

Then it's off to home for baseball/hockey/football tv.

Um, reparenting really stinks right now.

With user defaults, the sorting is out of order as mentioned. Also, if I want threaded comments, I want them threaded, period. I hate reading replies that are not below their parents. I would rather have to read a crappy post before a good reply than just a reply.
