If Smalltalk is written in a pure OO style with many very short methods, then it can be a nightmare to read. This is because it's very difficult to see the "big" picture when all you have are many classes with lots of methods each of which tells you very little about the overall flow of the program.

I've been recording stuff off the radio for years here in the UK and I use Windows. It's not too difficult to hack some Windows code to record sound input to a wav file. Lame does the rest.

In the last few months www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 have made their shows available for streaming. The shows are posted soon after they are broadcast and are updated when the next show is broadcast a day or week later. This largely does away with the need to record them when they are broadcast but still it's good to have a mp3 if I want to archive something special.

Apparently the BBC radio streaming is popular with ex-pats living round the world who no longer have to get up at some bad hour to hear the stream of their fave radio station back in blighty...

I experience the same problem and for me the time grows depending on the number of windows open.

This problem (bug) has been around for several years. I saw it first with NT 4 probably running IE4. Surprisingly searching both google standard and the newsgroup archive there are very few reports of other people experiencing the same problem. I would guess MS must know about it but have chosen not to fix implying it's something difficult that does not effect too many people. I wish they would sort it out though because turning javascript off can stop some sites working.

    Tom,

According to this story there were problems with the software on the Jubilee Line extension.

"It was called Moving Block Signaling, and they wanted to move the train along in electronic envelopes. About a year before it opened it became clear it wasn't going to work. They decided to put in conventional color light signaling, which the line was not designed for."

I would be interested to hear your take on this.

In the past I worked on a project which was certified for ISO9000/Tickit. The process involved producing many documents. Unfortunately the time needed to produce the documents was under estimated. This meant that the coding phase was squeezed, leading to poor code (lacked attention to detail & had limited unit testing). The end result was a system which was worse than similar systems with low levels of documentation.

Can you get V.90 56k at 40k+? I can only get 33.6 on a good day tops.

Check with BT that they haven't put a DACs on your line. A DACs is a device BT use to allow two customers to share one line. The big drawback is that it will do a 'nice' job of cutting your linespeed down to 33.6 max.

A couple of months ago I bought a 56k modem to replace my 28.8. For the first few weeks I was getting connection speeds of approx 50k, then one day it dropped to 33.6 max. After trying different modems and ISPs, I finally found out that BT had installed a second line for a neighbour by DACsing my line. BT were very reluctant to remove the DACs, but after many phone calls, I finally persuaded them to deDACs my line. Now I'm back to 50k for most connections.

If you do suspect that there's a DACs on your line, then send me an email & I can give you a name of someone within BT who might be prepared to help.
