Why is it that everyone wants everything to be GLPed? I mean, the GPL is not the only license out there, and has its drawbacks like any other license.

It is good to see the code, no matter what the license happens to be.

The Mozilla XPFE (Cross-Platfrom Front-End) was created to be cross-platform. No more ugly widget problems, and other porting issues. Mozilla already runs on a lot more platforms that Netscape 4 did. In fact, I think that it runs more more platforms than any other large app I can think of. Windows, Mac, Linux, BSDs, BeOS, OpenVMS, OS/2, and a couple others. That was all made possible by XPFE.

The XPFE also is so good, that it allows people to build applications on top of it! (Just like people build apps on top of UNIX tools). Check out MozDev.org for a good listing of these apps. They all can be run on any platform Moz runs on.

Mozilla is the next UNIX. If you don't believe me, see this article.

Well, I sure did not see a list of references at the end of his original article. If he really wanted people to read his previous works, he should have done so.

It's his own fault, and he deserves to get flamed. Especially for posting his work on OSOpinion.

Nautilus is not very good-looking, or useful. It takes up WAY too much screen space, and simply is not productive for the advanced user, and probably even the newbies will get sick of it quickly.

I hope they included a lot of customization options, that is all I can say.

  10. You have no clue. on Dot-Coms Say 'Unions Not Welcome!' · · Score: 2

The point of the union is to help people get a good, stable income and benefits so you can raise a family, or whatever, with peice of mind.

People don't realize that a union is a safety net, so that the worse case scenario doesn't happen.

The UAW (United Auto Workers) has directly affected the quality of my life while growing up. There were a lot of tough times in the 80's and the UAW helped my family through it. There were stikes and shutdowns, etc. It all worked out in the end, and my family and the company are both doing well.

In fact, I would be willing to say that if the UAW did not exist, I would not be where I am today, with a good tech job and having the free time and interest to write this post on Slashdot.

Just because you have not benefitted from a union does not mean that MILLIONS of other middle-class people have not. Many people's quality of life would not be as high, plain and simple.br>
Also, considering the fact that I would not feel very comfortable raising a family while working for a .COM, a union is definitely a viable option here. Working together is a good thing.

  11. How to make a Jabber Client... on AOL IM Rival Pulls The Plug · · Score: 1

Developing a Jabber client should be easy. All you basically need is a TCP socket and a Sax parser to get started.

All of the hard stuff is handled by the Jabber server. The client just puts a UI on it, and sends and receives events with the server.

If Apple would have bought Be, they would have ruined the BeOS community. I am really glad it did not happen, and I know almost all of the rest feel the same too.

NeXT was already dead, so there was not a community to ruin there. Apple took NeXT and did whatever they wanted with it, and nobody cared.
