It should be 40 million years older with a margin of error of 50 million years. Ars article much more in depth if you want to know more.

  2. Really? on Is Code.org Too Soulless To Make an Impact? · · Score: 1

Come on guys, lets be honest, think about who they are marketing to, kids under the age of 18. This is the message that will most strongly resonate with that group. Trotting out genuinely passionate programmers probably wont carry the same weight as a name or face they can recognize. Think of this as PR for coding in general not a call to inspiration or something.

Kids need to be open to the idea and know that a life of programming does not mean a life stuck in the dungeon of nerd hell but can mean a profitable productive and meaningful existence. The video does all of these things IMO.

Heh like I said below, I run the server and its quite upgraded, there is just no nice way to deal with slashdotters giving it to our server prison style =) Oh well, I didnt want to get any work done on the server today antways ;-)

Hehe I run the server that gotapex is on, and yes it is getting slashdotted. I just love how this works, the last time it was because we didnt have enough bandwidth, and this time its because we have too much stuff on this server. I remember back in the day when we could handle Slashdottings. For all those who remember, ZZZ Online (www.zzz.com.ru) is also on our server and it went through quite a few slashdottings well. Oh well, back to caressing the server and telling it the anal rape will be over soon =)

  8. Hmm I dont think so... on Crusoe As Server CPU · · Score: 1

I don't know about this, I guess it could just be me, but I dont think I could ever see a Crusoe inside a server. Now if they were doing some massively parallel stuff like 8 of them all in one box it might be feasible, but the whole reasoning behind it seems a bit shaky. If you ask me, the whole chain that I run through when buying a server is...

    1. Price
    2. Stability
    3. Power
    4. Expandability
    5. Size

Of course for a real company, (not a small one like mine) the list may be juggled around a bit with Price landing up closer to the bottom.

Still this is an interesting proposition, I wonder if Sun or anyone else will catch on and start using it in their value line of servers? All I know is that those 1U boxes they were showing last week were pretty damn sleek, and had quite a lot of power for the under a grand price tag.

  9. Talk about HUGE! on What's The World Record For Maximum Simultaneous Connections? · · Score: 1

Man, now thats one load of connections they got there! *dr evil* 1 billion connections *dr evil*

Heh but really, with a simple Athlon900 handling that many connections (albiet simple ones) I would have to agree that the whole debate about BSD handling more is pretty useless.

I do remember reading earlier that the FTP CDROM.com people had done extensive testing on their extremely popular download server. I think its some Xeon with like 4 gigs of ram and some huge HD, but the important thing is that it runs on FreeBSD. Apparently they did tests and Linux did not handle a huge amount of FTP connections very well as compared to FreeBSD. Hmm, just food for thought I guess...

  10. 3.23, Replication is powerful on MySQL 3.23 Declared Stable · · Score: 3
Yes yes, I would have to say the most important in the final stable release of 3.23 is the fact that they have fully working Replication now! Yee ha, talk about a timesaver for our dual DB system.
One way replication can be used is to increase both robustness and speed. For robustness two (or more) systems can used to switch to a backup server if you have problems with the master. The extra speed is achieved by sending part of the non-updating queries to the replica server.
Who can resists? Hehe Ill bet a lot of you can, and probably are still peeved about its lack of lots of stuff. But hey, its a step in the right direction right? I was just wondering though, do they have any row-locking features yet? I am too lazy to look =)
  11. Interesting! on New Machines From Sun · · Score: 1

I find it really interesting that servers are now reaching into the "value" pricing segment of the market. Maybe this tells us a little something about the increasing demand for lower priced servers, and servers in general?

I personally run a cluster of servers, and if you ask me, this would be a great addition to our cluster. Why? Well I mean at under $1000 you really can't lose, especially at the price to performance ratio this is running at. I could see a box like this used to server ads, as a backup webserver, an addition to a loadbalanced cluster, or even a database server if you expanded its RAM.

With Sun moving its grande butt into a low end arena like this, I think we will begin to see more and more of those on the market as companies look to fill in more servers all while keeping costs low.
