I think the point that you are missing is that Zope is a development environment, not an out of the box BBS or portal.

Zope is a tool to create very powerful web based applications. I have developed several applications that do not fit into the a PostNuke type system. A few of them include a tracking system for help calls for our help desk, a tool for our software engineers to operate at SEI level 4 (we won't get into that here), and a system for my assistant sysadmins (FAQ's, server information, How-TO's etc..).

As far as all the Zope sites being hard to navigate, I'm sure that is because a programmer created the site and not a web designer. (I don't want the frills, just the info)

We do have a problem, but I am a government contractor, they will hold on to this equipment until the contract dies, in a few more years.

I have made the point over and over again on the amount of money they (or we the tax payers) could save if we bought newer equipment. You don't even want to know how much we pay for support. In fact we just paid well over 10 grand for 4 9 gig hard drives to replace the single ended SCSI that originally cam in the machine.

Sure, but kick off about 10 concurrent compile jobs and see how they compare.

Are developers no longer compile directly on the I70 (Y2k issues)It's main purpose it to run many perl scripts that track our development and run an Oracle 7 database. Any more than 10 perl scripts running concurrently will make the machine grind to a halt. (I am running HPUX 11 with 384 meg of ram)

Come to think of it that is quite a load for such an old server. But there is no way that the maintenance contracts alone justify the cost.

What HP9000 are you using? I am the admin of an I70 and a K200, both with 2 CPU's. My PIII 800 compile time is much faster than these refrigators.

  5. DVD to small for backups. on Linux Backup With DVD Media? · · Score: 1

I thought of using DVD's for backups also. The problem I see is that the capacity is way to small, it may work for replacing a DDS-1 drive but for most backups I can't get away without using a DDS3. If you have ever conducted a restore over many tapes (remember 6525 tapes?) you know that if tape 3 out of 5 is bad your screwed.

That being said, I prefer to use one large tape. On some of my older HP machines I can fit an entire backup on one DDS3, that means no incrementals are needed. How sweet is that?
