Yes, the shite would hit the fan, but the recourse for the kid in a situation like that would be to file suit, or a grievance or something... there'd be a legal process involved. The kid would never be able to just suspend the principle off hand.
The point of your post was this: Teachers have a responsibility to maintain discipline and anything that is subversive is punishable by suspension or expulsion. Right? That is absurd.
If you let them get out of hand, you start losing part of the rest of the 80-90%. And one of the ways to let things get out of hand is allowing disrespect of others (students) or authority figures.
This is equivelent to saying that posting naked pictures of the president is grounds for jail time since it de-moralizes 80-90% of the citizens that like the president. I KNOW that can't be legal. And I KNOW you couldn't advocate such a speech policy. So why should it apply to schools?
Free education isn't an unalienable right; it's probably a privilege more on order with a driver's license
If it's such a privilege, why do those 10-20% not want to be there? Because, if they are under 18, it's the law to go. They HAVE to go. They have the right to not WANT to be there, don't they? Obviously they do! Just like you would have the right to not LIKE a law that was enacted that governs you. Teachers can't regulate how someone feels! So why shouldn't students have the right to say what they are feeling without fear of punishment?? Any attempts to restrict speech like that are repressive actions and should be CRITICIZED by educators. Educators should ENCOURAGE free speech (albeit in a different medium than this kid used but you get my point) rather than punish for it. Teachers should want to foster creativity instead of regulate it just because they don't like it or because they think it's 'bad for morale'
Yeah, either that was *the best* sarcasm EVER or you really believe what you said and are really in need of some new opinions.
If the former then f'scking brilliant.
This 'technology' is cute, makes you think a little bit. But there is something fatally flawed with it. And it's not what all the rest of you have been saying.
I don't ever send anything that is so important and so secret that my standard method of encryption (being an anonymous nobody amongst a hundred million anonymous nobodys) won't keep my secrets just fine. I think almost all/.ers would fall into my same category.
Now, concerning those people who DO have something secret, and who ARE important enough to be noticed when they send their secrets, do you actually think THOSE people would DARE use something as silly as this?? Hell no! If it's something that vitally important (aka, "we're going to blow up the world trade center at 11:00PM" or "we're going to bomb uzbekestan") their going to have some hard-core very bad-ass'ed crypto-phreak software that they can be sure isn't crackable. Seriously, can you picture, say, the President, the premier of china, Osama bin Laden, Bill Gates or even Linus himself, for that matter, using this?
.. that i wouldn't have to check out any pages i design in Netscape for linux, Netscape for windows, and then (and most importantly since 90% of web traffic uses it) in Microsoft IE.
Checking your work on three different browsers to see that they all look the same is silly. And this isn't even considering the remaining few people who use Macs..:)
Did anyone hear the one about the kid who was suspended over a chicken finger?
I think this was in the Central Florida area, i heard it on the radio, it was a big talk radio program... apparently some first grade kid was suspended for several days from his school for pointing a chicken finger at someone and saying 'bang, bang bang'.
I think this has to be the best example of the overzealous knee-jerk over-reaction typical of todays school system.
I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way... one good thing about being me is that i am damn good at what i do.
I am not worried about the influx of foreign labor. I'm not worried about the trend for our universities to put out too many CS majors that will very soon flood the workplace and invariably push down salaries. I'm not worried about huge mega-corporations and their monopolies.
Why?
Because i'm damn good at what i do. I can program a computer as well as anyone i know. If someone can do it better than me, I am glad to learn from that person and assimilate the new material. I can hold my own in any discussion on tech, and add something meaningful to the discussion. I can do things that would blow some people's minds.
In our new computer-centric world people who can make computers do their bidding will always be in demand. Computer technology is not going away, there will ALWAYS be a need for programmers.
I am damn good at what i do, this being the case, if i'm better than 99% of the unwashed masses of other programmers, i will always have a job and i will command the salary i want. This is true no matter what happens.
Anyone who would want to join a union just isn't confident in his or her own skills. If you are confident in yourself and you are absolutely the best you can be, always striving to be better you really have nothing to worry about.
Why on earth would you subject yourself to a set salary and seniority benefits that a union would impose? If you feel that it's good to be you, you shouldn't need that crap.

My car still drives on the ground.
Little nano robots in 3-5 years? Not likely.
Why must we persist in investing so much effort in following vaporware?

Educators today have to learn some common sense.
