Women just avoid doing it around men

I believe the word for this is "tact." It's a good thing when it comes to interacting with others.

I didn't say anything about women being better human beings. But it's much better to be offensive in private with your friends than in public situations.

Look at the comments to this article. Half are openly misogynistic (although I'm sure someone will try to argue that attempts at humor excuses all) others focus on whethere females gamers are hawt enough.

Maybe this kind of thing wouldn't bother you, but it's the kind of thing you hear complaints about from women in the geek scene. If you care to listen.

You say it like it's a joke. Many studies have shown that this is precisely what happens. Not that you're consciously deciding to drive less cautiously, but subconsciously people's perception of safety leads to adopting more dangerous driving habits.

But maybe you consciously fight that tendency.

I assume you've already played Nethack, Moria, and Angband. Have you tried Zangband or T.o.M.E?

For those that don't know, these games are the same basic style of diablo, but are text-based (or graphical text-based if you consider ascii maps graphics). Short on graphics, long on depth of play. Most versions don't have an action-element however, and that's something you'll miss from Diablo. Though there are multi-player Angband variants that aren't as turn-based as the rest.

Has Blizzard ever mentioned these old games? It seems that the basic item system is very much like certain angband varients.

I don't totally disagree with all the points you made, but there are alternatives to Windows Media Player.

Rexx is the embedded scripting language in the terminal program Zoc. This is the only windows client I've found that I particularly like and one of the main reasons I chose it way back in the day was because of it's powerful scripting language. I don't script muds anymore, but if I did I'd be glad for its continued existance. As far as using rexx for assorted small programming tasks I can't vouch for it, it's compromise between absolute simplicity and power/flexibility makes it fill the terminal scripting niche pretty well, imho.

DDR (dance dance revolution) is good for an aerobic workout. If you supplement extensive DDR playing with some of those wearable weights on your ankles and wrists, you can probably build some muscle as well. Particularly if you make a point of pumping your arms like an idiot as I do.

If you get a soft pad for DDR, then you'll need to put something heavy on the corners to keep it in place. If you buy a small weightlifting set, you can get a little upper body workout by putting the weights on the corners of the pad, and during the game as you constantly readjust them.

There's other games you can play too. I forget what it's called, but there's an arcade boxing game played by actually punching with pair of gloves. The gloves are fairly heavy, and your arms will get a workout if you play the game very much.

In the case of musicians this means they have less time to write and produce music for us to listen to, because they have to find some other job.

  15. Opengl or not? on Nvidia's Dave Kirk Explains The Point of Cg · · Score: 1

Okay, I think I'm a bit confused here.

They say the Cg compiler will "output either DirectX or OpenGL." and "that Any place where those two run, Cg will run."

Does this mean that it will work anywhere either DirectX or OpenGL work, or that it will only work where that both of those run it will work? I would naturally assume the former but then there's the part that says

What happens is the compiler reads the specification of the hardware from DirectX, works out what capabilities are and creates code that runs well on that hardware.

It sounds to me like this makes Cg dependant on DirectX, as opposed to simply supporting it.

They want "to be open and flexible and take away all the reasons not to go with Cg" but I would imagine a dependance on DirectX would constitute a possible reason not to go with Cg.

So is DirectX neccesary just for hardware detection features, or is there a service in OpenGL that Cg will use for the same purpose?

    And now to conjecture wildly.
It sounded a bit like nVidia has the the right intentions, but is afraid that Microsoft will cause trouble if it looks like OpenGl is given equal support in Cg.

"His bill would allow copyright holders to set up decoy files and use other techno-tricks like file-blocking and redirection to throw P2P pirates off the trail, but it would forbid those holders from employing tactics that would damage or destroy pirates' own computer systems"

I agree that this paragraph doesn't seem to have the pungent aroma of a law permitting DoS attacks against p2p networks. However, it seems to me that there could be some question as to what constitutes a "denial of service" blah, blah IANAL, but the due process clauses in the constitution should render this law, well, unconstitutional. Given that nobody can be sure that all of the copies of Full_MPAA&RIAA_Archives!!!!.zip are as advertised, taking any action to impede the transfer of files based on that name would have the potential to be harming innocent users (if you can really call it harm; another debatable point).

On the other hand, it doesn't appear to me that "decoy files and ... other techno-tricks" are illegal anyhow, so the law is somewhat superfluous at best.
