What's even stupider is that you seem to think you that it is legal for a police officer to kill someone who's disregarded an order. He was thought to have a BOMB. He came out of a building that was being watched and known to contain people who were in contact with terrorists. You were not there to make the split second decision whether to not shoot and possibly be blown up. I do not believe he was shot unjustifiably, he most likely kept struggling while he was attempting to be detained and yes if I was put in the position of letting the guy live or possibly getting blown up (with justifiable evidence otherwise) along with innocent bystanders then I would have shot him too. Disobeying an order was not the sole reason he was shot and you are an idiot if you believe otherwise.
I totally agree. This guy was NOT some innocent joe. Just read the previous posts about the illegal passport stamp, student visa, etc. If he had half a brain he would have just complied and faced the consequences instead of running toward the trains that had recently been bombed then I am 99.9% sure he would still be alive today.
As far as being shot while on the ground I would think he did something other than DUH laying on the ground motionless. If he had a bomb and he would have set it off then everyone would be up in arms saying he should have been stopped. In my opinion, this guy deserves a Darwin award and that is all.
that many members of the Islamic commuinty (Just recently, I beleive there has been more distinction between the moderate and extremist types) are being sought after and imprisioned.
I think they were sought after more for having connections with "questionable" (ie known to be involved in the terrorist community) people, not b/c of what religion they are. I look at it in a similar way to how drug lords are taken down. At times the process begins at the bottom with the users and then works its way up through the drug dealers until they get to the head honcho.
If you do not want to put yourself in the position of being sought after don't engage in questionable activities.
I agree we want different things. You obviously have a lot more experience using tape than I do, I have not ever even heard of DVCPRO. My tape experience basically consists of popping a random cassette into a VCR and playing it or recording on it. I also have used a few video cameras that record to VHS.
As far as recording your own programming it would depend how you set things up whether a DVD recorder would treat it as one big long stream. IMO recording to a hard drive is definately the way to go. I do exactly what you mentioned in your post and it works great. I can put the edited content onto my video server and/or onto some DVD's. I like this setup better than a stand alone DVD recorder for three main reasons:
1) I can record, watch, erase and not waste a DVD. 2) I don't have to worry about space (300 gig HD) and don't have to change out DVD's. 3) I can easily transfer the files onto a DVD, VHS, or send them over the internet.
If you do decide to setup a video server I highly recommend putting the hard drive into an external enclosure. They can be had for 30-50 bucks and makes it really easy to transport large files to another computer that would take a long time to transfer over a network. I use this enclosure and really recommend it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82 E16817146187
It has USB 2.0 and firewire and it works GREAT as a heatsink so no noisy fan is needed. You can save around 10 more bucks if you only want USB 2.0.
Okay, in another player you may not be able to start exactly where you left off but you can select a chapter pretty close and fast forward if need be. It only take 30 seconds at most, not an unreasonable amount of time. Thats what I like about DVD actually, with a tape its a pain in the ass if you want to jump to a certain part of the movie compared to DVD where its almost instantaneous.
They will even deliver cigarettes as well. I know it's not online ordering but it is still pretty sweet. When I was a student at Ohio State a few years ago I went to visit some friends at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and after getting beer delivered to the party I became very jealous and wished they had that service in Columbus. There was just something cool about getting beer delivered right to me like a pizza. Oh well, in Columbus I only lived a block from a convenience store so I didn't have to wait 30 minutes for the beer to arrive.
Actually, most poker websites (and all the sites I play at) randomly generate each card once it is needed. For example, after the flop there are of course two cards left to play, the turn and river. Well, the website does not have the value of those cards already picked out as that would be a security risk. Therefore, they generate the card the instant it is flipped over.
I have relatives as well as friends in both Duluth and the Twin Cities (lived in both their whole lives) and they have accents to me. Either your friends aren't very good at discerning accents or you are an anomaly. I find it hard to believe that you have absolutely no accent. I have met people from many different states and its relatively easy for me to tell what region, if not what state they are from. I live on the north side of Chicago and I even find it easy to tell if people live North, East, or South from here (if its 40+ miles away)just by listening to their voice. Everyone has accents, they just never think they have an accent since they are used to what they sound like.
I'm curious what is so bad about XP Pro? I jumped from 98SE to XP Pro when it first came out b/c at the university I was attending I could get a free copy since I was a CS major. I was in the middle of upgrading and decided to try the new OS out. Yeah, at first there were things that were a pain (driver issues) but those all have gone away for me. For 3 years I did not have it crash one time, which I think is damn good. The only time I had problems was when I started using a USB wireless network dongle which caused random crashes (about 1-2 times a week). Other than that I think Windows XP is the best MS OS I have used. So, what was your experience to make you think it's so crappy?
Are you from Minnesota so you can't tell you have an accent? If you head to northern MN they DEFINATELY have accents. My Dad's half of the family is all from the East Grand Forks area (close to Fargo,ND) and they ALL sound exactly like the movies. I also have spent part of/my whole summer vacationing in Cass Lake, MN since I was 2 years old and everyone I have met there who have lived there most of their life has accents too. Maybe in southern MN the accent isn't as bad (although in Winona its definately noticable), but I hate to break it to you, Minnesotans DO have accents in real life.
That service sounds great, but I am just curious what kind of latency does it have? I do occasionally play online games and having latency of 120+ would really suck when I am used to about 30-50.
I also want to say I have been with Comcast for 2 years and their service has not been crappy in my area (North Shore area of Chicago). It is nice and speedy, only had 1 outtage for about an hour, and decent customer service. A few months ago I needed a new modem and had been working past the time the regular installers are done for the day and the person I talked to on the phone ended up driving the new modem over to my apartment. I even got a free network card out of the deal. Did you have a bad experience with Comcast?
The US is also WAY larger than many European countries. Sure, in very urban areas its not a problem to fund mass transportation but when you get outside of those areas there is just not the money to support it. I am from the midwest and have lived in both urban areas with 9+ million people (Chicago, with great mass transportation) and also a small town of around 5,000. In the small, rural areas it would NOT be a minor inconvenience to lose the ability to drive a car. There was one grocery store about 8 miles from where I lived and to get to work it was about 10 miles away. Now, maybe in nice weather I could have gotten on a bike to ride to those places (although how much groceries can you load onto a bike?) but it gets damn cold and icy in the winter. When it is -10 degrees F and a windchill of -30 transportation other than a car (I don't own a snowmobile) would be down right unsafe and possibly deadly. So, maybe in your smaller country you do not require a car but there are many areas that a car is definately needed.
I don't condone drinking and driving, but having a mandatory minimum that is excessive for the first offense is downright stupid and could very well ruin a persons life. If the person is not scared enough of the consequences after a first offense and for some stupid reason does it again then NAIL them the second time. Just give them a chance to learn from their first mistake instead of possibly ruining their life.
The Palm Treo 650 is pretty close to what you seem to desire minus the radio. It does not have a huge storage capacity, but supports flash media cards so you could have a decent amount of memory to store MP3's and whatnot. I am most likely going to get one when I upgrade my phone next. Check it out here: http://web.palmone.com/products/smartphones/treo65 0/details.jhtml/
LIAR! Where exactly are you from? No country in the world can claim 100% literacy. Now, where you are from may have very high literacy (I'm thinking 90%+) but please do not claim 100%, that hurts your credibility.
I run different flavors of linux as well which also run basically until I power them off or there is a power outage. I also have one box dedicated to Windows XP Pro which I mostly use for gaming and sometimes web surfing, nothing critical. Hell, I probably should power it off at night to save money/energy but I don't. Weeks of uptime is sufficient, anything but getting blue screen daily.
When I was deciding on upgrading from Windows 98SE (which had come with my computer), I chose Windows XP Pro for the simple reason I was a student at the time and it was free if you were a CS student. I had considered 2000 but I don't think that was offered free and I wanted to try out the newest OS. Overall, I have been very happy with Windows XP Pro, I can actually leave my computer on for weeks without having to reboot which was a HUGE difference compared to 98SE. 2K is definately a stable Windows OS too, but I am happy with XP Pro. I do not argue that it is more bloated than 2K though.:-)
Because about 2 weeks ago the small software company I work at recieved a new pre-built PC to use for testing purposes that said on the reciept it was shipped with MS XP Home Edition. Well, there was no CD inside or product key either. When we went to activate the OS an error popped up saying something to the effect that "this key has been used too many times". It was obvious that the vendor was not doing legit business. We first called the vendor and they basically didn't care until we threatened to contact Microsoft, then they said they would get back to us. Well we were pissed off and decided to contact Microsoft anyway and they didn't seem to care either. We got transferred to like 5 different people, it took like 2 hours, and then the only response was "we will file a report." You would think they would make it easier to inform them of businesses stealing from them, and it seems that now they have. Anyway, we contacted the vendor and told them a report had been filed about them with MS and low and behold a brand new copy of MS Home Edition showed up 2 days later. I just wonder how many people would actually go through the trouble (or even be aware that they had a counterfeit copy) of informing MS of such blatant abuse.
There is a big difference between a POS operating system and a counterfeit operating system. BTW I agree that NT4 and XP are the only ones worth using.
OK, well, CE and EE are NOT software engineers either. I am a CS major but I know how the hardware works at least as well as most EE/CE's I know. I highly doubt that the software most EE/CE's write has fewer bugs than someone with a CS degree from a quality program. Just because it may be easier for an EE/CE to read some "how to code book" does not mean that what they produce is even close to the quality of someone properly trained in that field. Do not insult software engineers when its obvious you have your head stuck up your ass because you have some piece of paper that says you are an "engineer".
Your average of $51k sounds about right. I just recently graduated and started out at $45k plus benefits and a few other friends of mine found jobs paying salaries of $43-51k. Now there are a lot of companies trying to pay around $25-35k/yr but I basically declined to work for that pay (especially when the cost of living was not low i.e. downtown Atlanta).
I too finished college last May. A lot of companies I interviewed at were offering very shitty starting salaries like around 25-35K a year. Someone else already mentioned that you can make that doing tech support (or hell even being a cable guy), so it was kind of an insult to only get offered that much when you know the software you would help develop would bring in a decent amount of money (and I am very confident in my abilities, although I do know I have much to learn since I am just joining the field).
I kept at it and finally landed an awesome job as a software developer and they started me at 45K/yr plus benefits. I also have two other friends who graduated (with CS degrees) last May and found jobs starting between 44-51K/yr. So keep looking for a job and don't work for less than you believe you are worth. I was getting pretty desperate and almost took a job in Atlanta offering 35K/yr and I am very glad I held out because I don't think you can live very well in downtown Atlanta on that (at least from the cost of living information I looked at). There are jobs out there, you just have to be very persistant and have some luck too! Good luck and don't give up yet!
