  2. Uhm, reduce your number of servers? on Why Don't Servers Support Power Management? · · Score: 1

If you're running idle 75% of the time, and have 3 servers, remove one of the servers. There, now you cut your "server power usage" by 1/3, and are being more efficient with your resources. Sell the other one for petty cash or take it home.

Oh, but then the network resources will be overdrawn!!! Duh, and that's why you have 3 servers whose resources are available to all users, all the time, even at peak hours.... damn those pesky peak hours.

  5. oh jeez, you think M$ wants to be an ASP? on Microsoft's DNS Down · · Score: 1

M$ does not want to be an ASP. Their .NET initiative is to develop software specifically designed to be used in an ASP environment. Then they can license the software to ASPs, who will then resale the software to specific users.

  6. I'd trust them... on Microsoft's DNS Down · · Score: 1

I do, because I use MetaFrame's ICA Client for all our company's internal work, and it honestly never goes down. Only three times in 6 months has our Terminal Server stopped a service, and all of those times were during the evening hours, when there were no client sessions online anyway.

Actually, I'd be much more lenient to implement a local server-based solution, simply because we have to depend on the client's hardware, and deal with previous server configurations. Those servers are always having problems simply because they're so incredibly old.

Anyway, I think the limiting factor in virtual computing is the bandwidth issue, nothing to do with "rent vs own" or "dependability of service". If you've got a high speed connection, and a slow computer, I'd actually PREFER to use a virtual desktop, as it will be about a million times faster than running locally.

It all depends on the situation, ASP isn't for everybody, especially consumers... but it works EXCEPTIONALLY in a small-med sized corporate business; especially when they're on the same backbone as the provider, hehe. =)

  8. 1. Get a clue. 2. Go with M$ WMP on Live Streaming Video? · · Score: 1

You want people to see this stream? It means that they need to have the software to play it.

If you were an average moron surfing the net on a 56k connection, would you take the time to download some other player just to be able to see some stupid live feed or would you continue surfing to the next site?

If you want as many people as possible to view your stream, use WMP. If you don't like M$ and think that you're going to have a job after marketing your stream to a small minority of open source nuts... well, you might keep your job, but you sure as hell aren't going to score any brownie points with your superiors. You know, those guys who can axe you at anytime? And, unlike you, have half a clue about reaching as many people as possible.

Don't hate M$'s products, because quite frankly, all the recent ones have performed every task that they were created to do, and do it very nicely at that.

If you must hate M$, hate them privately, but wave their battle flag if you're trying to shoot for as many people as possible (which, incidentally, is almost always the lowest common denominator on the human scale).

  9. Outsourced IT... what business model to use? on Ask FCC Chief Technologist David J. Farber · · Score: 1

As horrible as outsourcing your IT needs might sound to /.ers, I believe that it is becoming more and more viable as companies become more dependent on technology without wanting to increase their spending on specialists. Basically, what do you think the base requirements are for a company to move away from the perception of a customer-service oriented local company to the perception of a customer-service oriented national company? Without losing the focus on service, i.e. MindSpring.
