We Australians have become a bit carried away after the last two stories being dedicated to us... but alas, we have nothing to contribute to this thread until the day after tommorrow!
Agreed. As a Telstra employee who works in the political world of Broadband, I can tell you one thing that does actually scare the shit out of Telstra...
The phrase, "No problem, I will just give my local member of parliament a call."
However, whilst it may seem like there is a monopoly, Telstra is super aware and sensitive about the commercial world it is approaching. Yes, it was built on a culture of public servants who were in the pub by two o'clock everyday, simply becasue they could, but it is changing. There are lots of seriuos threats to Telstras monopoly, the biggest being the Communications watchdog. Telstra has been forced to make room available in each and every one of its exchanges for other ISP's to use the ADSL racks. It is all sitting there waiting, and at a cost of next to nothing to the underdog.
This is however, only available to regional people,
_but_,If you live in a remote enough region (this may mean you my friend) The Australian Government will subsidise almost $5k worth of gear to be installed on your property by the evil aussie empire, and a 2 Way Satellite Broadband service with similar specs to Telstra DSL for $16 per month until the end of time.
Not suprisingly enough, this initiative was launched just before the last federal election and is of course a mutual PR exercise on the goverment and Telstras part.
I understand entirely what you are saying and could not agree more. I am the first to say that the radical femanist has ruined the cause, and whould not ordinarilty bite at this for the very reasons you have illustrated.
On this occasion I there was stuff behind the she thing. My original remark was more in jest than being out for blood. But hey....lets cut them some slack, given they probably had a nightmare couple of days.
I feel that the post was geared towards exposing that this was a woman as a way of having the public say "Ooohh I see, thats why you were down so long." These guys have a responsibilty not to do that. I am ordinarily the last person to bite at sexism....that only validates it. I was just surprised and bummed by this one.
I wasnt wanting this to become a gender issue. I dont see any use in that I agree with Lando re: that the issue really is that this tech has turned up who clearly shouldnt be there and seems to be lacking in support from his/her employers part
It only took you forty five minutes mins to offically retract the whole "she" thing.
Gathering data from your May 2nd demographic evauation, Im thinking that you nearly lost five percent of your readers in the space of forty five minutes.
You know..... *hopes this is not off topic* some friends and I am watched The Holy Grail again last year for the fist time in a few years. An incredible thing occured. The three of us, (who had all seen the film a squillion times) similtaneously noticed for the first time that in the scene you are refering to, there is a man in the background throwing a swallow with coconuts attached to it feet, up into the air.
Whether it was a European swallow or an African swallow, I couldnt tell you.
This Slashdot story posted only a couple of weeks ago suggests that broadband is already in place in every corner of Canada in the form of 2 way Satelitte.
Although we know that its not the most favourable option and is quite pricy, why are the Canadian Gov and the other private sector crew involved not just concentrating on this, before spending forty five billion Canadian dollars on planting pipes?
As negative as this may sound, it is constantly amazing me, what a mess so many countries are making of broadband. Australia's DSL situation is a nightmare between ISPs renegging on AUP agreements, and mail outages that last a millennia.
Does it really have to be this hard to deliver relatively simple peices of technology to the globe?
Good Afetrnoon Gentlemen... all your evidence of prior water holes are belong to John Doe,Mary Bloggs, John Citizen, Bruce Willis, Justin Reid , Bill Gates, Cowboy Neal , ESR...etc etc etc.
Some one set us up the CD Rom.
Ok..over it? Me too... but this is in fact the first post that I have ever seen that actually warrants it.
Yet another example of Mr.IT Mangement drone, designation thirty of something or rather, fooling him/her self into believing that they are infact the Borg Queen, and flexing their damn implants!
I work for a large corp, and I am all for the concept that process and uniformity are in place for a reason. However, I am also clear that the most effective and powerful management tool is empowering the masses. Not allowing people to choose their own screensaver is most definately not in keeping with this mindset!
If this crew could see a genuinely negative security implication (RTFM guys!) with their employees loading (the very excellent) SETI screen saver then ok.... but my thinking is that the smoking man himself has got to be behind this decision!
Britney Cleary is indeed quite a dusturbing creatue. If I ever run into her on the "girl wide web" or any other "digital diva" on her "buddy list" i will be sure to engage in the "phenomenom of online talking" and give her the ultimate "bbfn"
Doh!..Its about time this perfect universally utilised adjective was recognised. What better way is there to sum up that moment of instant realisation. In fact, we should just have Matt Groening re-write the dictionary
Perhaps we could look at making people square too... what a space economical way to deal with the population problem.... sigh.
Which ever way you look at it Telstra will always have the monopoly in Australia.... They are moving in on Asian comms companies by the dozen and seem to barely even notice thier competitors leaving the game as quickly as they joined.
And just when you thought Ziggy couldnt get any luckier.... the Australian Government has rushed to assist him by subsidising satelitte broadband for customers in remote locations (aka: the outback)....
Oh, but its not about personal gain or pleasing shareholders, apparently its about delivery to Australia the technology that it deserves.
Ahh.... making it easier!
Funny guys, and awesome tunes.
As of today I will offical not accept any proposal that does not occur on a weblog.
Best of luck..
You could always consult the oracle

There is no info online other than a number to call.
Hands up who is moving to the country?
I'm seeing Aibo cocking his leg on the wheels and saying, "Oh, what a feeling!"

But at the end of the day, who cares, /. is back.

Yours in disappointment,

Will they be shipped in a large wooden trojan rabbit?
No No.. lets forget Camelot, 'tis a silly place.
Peasant: Who made you king?
Authur: The Lady of the Lake. Peasant: I dont care what some watery tart says, I didnt vote for you.( Or something )
