    no it isn't.

    Don't you idiots realize that what you are getting is more free content? How many of you clicked on banner ads? That's what /. does, link to other content, and you post talking about, they serve ads, /, serves ads, it's how things work for ad supported sites. They (outside sites) don't care 'cuase they get hits, and /. gets the posts. More content for all. NO big deal.

    BTW, Metcalfe is a fool, or got hit/bought on the head.

    Almost every software package that I install on our NT boxes says "Please reboot to complete installation" at the end of it. This is standard, in my experience, and rebooting NT never hurts, while leaving it up often does. I hear that W2K doesn't need this, but until I install 50+ vendors products on it, I won't believe it.

    Maybe Windows just stresses out the hardware more and causes itself to crash because of that?

    Count this be because of the difference between programming in a theoretical environment(i.e. Redmond) and programming in a real-world environment (i.e. the real world)?

    Did ESR cover this in CaTB?

    you can "assume" if you want, but you're the only one who believes it. The ONE and ONLY failure for linux was the HD, causeing a four hour downtime. If replacing a harddrive on a linux machine is roughly akin to replacing one on an NT machine..you rcan remove one crash and four hours from both results. So now, Linux was not down at all and NT was down for 61 hours, ie. Linux is infinitely more stable than NT.

    We can't assume a damn thing, but it's nice to see a study (rather than a press release) that backs up what has been my real-life experience.

    I reboot all our NT machines at least once a week (52 times/yr). If you don't they'll take care of it themselves...

    umm 16X is a bit more than luck. If you don't believe this test I have a quick excercise for you to do. Install a dual boot NT/Linux box, when one crashes switch to the other. At the end of the year tell me which one you used more.

    NT has various memory leaks, it has to be restarted or will eventually crash. It could be the apps that are causing it, but it is the apps that give NT all it's functionality so that's no excuse.

    thats not entirely true. Although I have gotten a blue screen directly from a service pack upgrade, course I got one the other day from moving my mouse, dunno what I was thinking.

    sorry, konstant, but I know at least three of those are the truth (3, 4 & 6). And two are debateable and won't be established for another year (1 & 2) As a Microsoft employee do you feel you are keeping your biases and self-interest in check?

    I'm looking forward to W2K, every OS needs to evolve, but I seriously doubt I'll get the truth of the situation from M$, that web page offended me. And I know they've got another billion $ or so to push it, advertising doesn't make a great product and the feedback between the promises and the reality is what you are hearing (and the /. group think in action). How many times does one need to be bitten before they become shy?

    Maybe Rob could roll up a 1/2 point auto-moderator. If an AC post contains any of the /. memes (you know what they are). a post goes down by 1/2 point..... nah, that's a stupid idea, forget it. Something needs to be done. I'm gonna try and point them over here, I just hope they realize how bad it a has gotten, i.e. expontentially worse since they last time it was brought up, and the mergers, and the money. There's just TOO many peole here.

    Heres a funny thing. The other day I was reading USAToday (dead tree) about the "DDoS of Y2K". They were quoting /. comments(you might want to check Friday's edition to see if your post got snagged), I wonder how many people reading USAT realize that pouring hot grits down natalie portman's petrified PANTS, is a good portion of /.'s content. Although I guess its the equivalent of the funny/obituary pages of the old media rags.

    (if that doesn't show you how much geeks rule, what does...)

    this is actually a good idea. That's generally the usefulness of a pseudonym (sp). To check and see if it's the name or the content that gets the reaction. Unfortunately this might be difficult as any extensive work bears the intellectual fingerprints of whoever wrote it, and the /. crowd would scream bloody murder that they have been lied to (even if it was to show their own biases).
