Actually, a company called Software Technology Group is working on the UDI implementation for both Linux x86 and Linux PowerPC. Hockey - Canada's gift to the world
I have been using Media 100 for about a year now. I found it fairly easy to learn (6.0 was a big help) and I have had great results.
The machine is a PowerMac G3 with a media 100 P6000 board and DV daughter card plus an HDRfx addon. It seems Media 100 did everything with hardware. Which makes it quite fast.
We have 384M ram (more would be nice) and two Micronet DatadockLVD RAID stacks (36G and 18G).
The only real problem with this machine is the cost. Plan on spending about $30,000US for this setup.
Media 100 does seem to have some stability issues also, but I think they are more from MacOS than Media 100. On the bright side, there Tech support and Service people are wonderful.
I would go this way if you are doing high end stuff, but it is a bit of over kill for home movies BS Hockey - Canada's gift to the world
I actually have a SGI-320 with the flatpanel display. It worked fine under 3.3.5 with the fbdev server, but I haven't tried it. You might try SGI's linux site for more information. At the very least you can download the configs to use the panel with 3.3.x and you can probably work something out form there.
On a side note, now that you mention it, I am eagerly awaiting the time to set up 4.0 on the 320 and see if it works for me!
I am originally from the Holland/Grand HAven area. It has always seemed to me that Holland (and therefore Ottawa County) is very uptight. Holland has a reputation for being a very religious area, and they use that to press their opinions on everybody. Now, I have nothing against them being religious, but I do take ofense when someone tries to use it as an excuse to restrict my rights.
Holland comprises the majority of the voting population in Ottawa county so what Holland wants, Holland gets. This has been a recurring theme for many years.
I can see Holland as a city passing these laws, and the ntrying to get the rest of the county to follow suit. Which won't be hard, because of Hollands control of the county.
I personally don't use the library for accessing the Internet because I have my own computer and dial-up access. However, I would certainly feel sorry for anyone who did have to resort to using those machines as I have had bad experiences with filtering software. At my high school, we had filtering software installed and more often than not, the sites that were blocked were not porn sites or warez sites or anything of the sort. The sites were perfectly innocent pages that contained useful information. It has been my experience that filters do a lot more harm by blocking legitimate(sp) pages than they do good by blocking porn sites.
Anyway, this program in Holland will spread if it passes, to all of Ottawa county and on to the rest of the state.
The army using sound was mentioned in the book. They never used the actual wierding modules, but as I recall, when Paul and Jessica meet Stilgar for the first time, the same agreement is made in the book regarding teaching the Fremen to use it. I think the movie put far more significance (SP) on it than the book did, but it was mentioned. Other than that the movie was pretty good, turning a serveral hundred page book into a two hour movie means that a lot of things are going to get cut out or done poorly. Several other things that I thought were important were left out also. For instance, Paul being trained as a mentat, and the fact the Thufir Hawat was not only a mentat but also the Master of Asassins. One of the lines that sticks out in my mind from the book is by The Lady Jessica, "Where Thufirs Hawat goes, Death and destruction follow." Anyway, the book is at near the top of my list and the movie was not too bad, though I would give almost anything to see the original 6 hour version.
I just got one of the 320's. I won the one from COMDEX/Spring. It IS a sweet machine. With any luck SGI will eventually lisence the design for the bus and such to the rest of the world and perhaps they will start using this design. I feel that this is a MUCH better architecture than what we currently call PCs. IMHO.
Can you say SLOW! I believe that will end up in nothing but a massive traffic jam so that nothing will get done... Then again maybe that is their idea. If its too slow people won't use it anyway
Thats because a CS degree really doesn't teach programming. A CS degree is meant to teach the fundementals of design and the overall concepts behind the software. I am personally a Computer Engineering studen (which is EE mixed with CS). The CS classes that I have taken are ALL concept classes that assume that you already know how to program. This seems to be the norm all over the country. You can't actually get through the CS program without learning how to write good code, but writing good code isn't actually taught, and really it can't be. One must learn it for themselves.
