It's a great way to work OSS apps/environments into the users familiar zone. The more comfortable they get the less likely they are to notice when the underlying windows part is gone altogether. If you can run everything on a linux box you can on a windows box without the ms tax, why wouldn't you (other than users being unfamiliar with it)?
I guess I prefer to err on the side of caution. That way our (the human race and all living forms on this globe) future won't be like a shitty sci-fi film.
My guess is you're conservative because you'd rather save $5 today than avoid a possible global crisis. The narrow minded, poor planning, ethnocentric, pathetic administration is right up your alley.
100 thousand years isn't very long in the life of a species. Consider how long the human race took to get to where we are (assuming you're not a creationist/spontanious generation believer).
My great grandmother was from Latvia and she used to get pissed when I was a kid and we called her Russian or Soviet since she left before WWII. My mom explained it as "White Russian" instead of "Red". Strange turn of world events has them as their own country again.
This story is why I never give my account info to anyone (outside of writing a check). We're going to have to create a better system or the whole thing will become worthless. The banking system works on trust. Without people depositing their money banks wouldn't have anything to lend. Bad pattern for Bank of America to start.
I've got some news, "Fuck Bill Gates". I've been trying to reinstall my goddamn laptop for 3 hours now and it keeps freezing every fucking time I try to activate it. Linux is easier to install, OS X is easier to install, hell even windows 98 is easier to install. Thank you dell and microsoft for fucking my weekend.
And to reiterate "Fuck Bill Gates" returns 1,560 hits. Consumer based OS my ass.
Why do rednecks and oil == right wing? Stupidity? I'm one of 6 liberals in my state (full of rednecks, oil, stupidity & republicans). How the hell did we ever get a democrat for a governor? Oh yeah you need to add football to the list if Barry Switzer (former OU Football Coach) endorses you, you'll have a better chance of winning. The funny thing is our governor beat a football star (and right-wing dipshit) Steve Largent. Wonders will never cease.
If you work in the software industry you realize you can build everything from scratch if you so desired. Unfortunately that costs money and time. Frequently running your own business requires trade offs. One of those is using software from other businesses. I own the design collection and am very pleased with it (photoshop, indesign, illustrator & acrobat). It helps my business achieve our goals of creating software for our clients that meets their needs. I paid around $1100 if I remember correctly. $1100 dollars for a product that cost 100's of thousands or more to develop is a good trade off in my opinion. I don't feel Adobe is necessarily a bad company but I'm not fond of their BSA bullshit. That is my only beef.
Welcome to the world of patents and politicians that are owned by the corporations. Until people get some backbone and quit voting because they are afraid be prepared for more of the same.
PDFs are backward compatible. If you are using new features that weren't available you might need to upgrade your (free) reader. However you can print to PDF from any Mac application (I haven't tried the Linux alternatives) and the FDF Libraries are available for using for free from Adobe. Not too difficult if you ask me.
Adobe isn't the nicest company to deal with either but they are a hell of a lot better than MS.
Note: I'm an MSDN subscriber and I develop for Linux, Windows, Mac and *nix systems.
Bill Gates is trying to maximize shareholder wealth. When you find an honest publicly traded company let me know (mind you I used to work at arthur andersen and most private companies aren't honest either).
Gates makes his money by selling, pushing & shoving his inferior product on everyone. If he truly wanted an interoperable system he'd open up those undocumented api's etc...
I personally like windows but I also like OS 9, OS X, Linux, BeOS, Solaris,...
An OS should be like a screw driver. It does its job and doesn't need to be redesigned every week.
For those of you out there that still cannot figure it out. Ask slashdot is for the poster but also can provide relevant information to other people that didn't think of the problem in the same way. For example, I do not host any blogs at my company but if I decided to I would have this question and answer set as a good reference (in addition to googling).
Googling info isn't always the best, frequently people contribute things to this blog that you cannot duplicate by a simple query on google.
And last but not least you can always turn ask slashdot off in your preferences....
So for the last fucking time: YES HE CAN GOOGLE IT BUT SHE DECIDED TO ASK SLASHDOT INSTEAD. Move on.
The article was focusing on the Blackberry because its popularity (1.3 million units in the UK alone). I'm concerned after reading the article about repetitive stress injury to my thumbs from playing video games (from Atari 2600 to my XBox). Damn you FIFA 2005!!!!
And everyone knows you need a 1.5 GHz processor to run notepad.exe. My guess is a 1.42GHz G4 would hold up pretty well against a 1.5GHz Centrino especially if they have the 2MB L3. Plus look at the cost comparison, it's not even close the Centrino is significantly more.
Maybe someone should put a sticky note on the computers that says CTRL-Mouse Click = Right Click.
I use Linux and frequently use the middle button (scroll button) for pasting. I don't miss that button at all when using windows. The same can be said for when I'm on my Macs, no 2nd button and I don't miss it (although scroll would be nice on the mouse & the trackpad).
If you just accept the platform you're working on and quit bitching I've found it's much easier to get work done (as long as slashdot isn't available).
In Europe the notes are different sizes. The 5 is the smallest, 10 is bigger,... You get the picture. So when they are in a cab they can determine which bill to pay the cabby by size instead of him saying that 100 Euro note is a 10 Euro note.
The only problem with that is even if they are released next week you'll have to wait 3 months to get one. Then you have the risk of the iBook problems (bad mobo) or the initial Aluminium Powerbooks with white spots and a recall on all the screens. As I recall there were heat problems with the 800MHz Ti Powerbooks as well (very hot).
If I were you I'd buy an inexpensive iBook and see if you like it. If you do sell it on eBay (they hold value very well, especially if you keep everything that came with it, box and all) and buy a rev 2 powerbook. (wait for 10.4 Tiger before getting iBook otherwise you'll have a $129 upgrade price).
The OS is the best you'll ever use, just get a 2+ button mouse with a scroll wheel and you'll be fine. You may want to get a Kensington or MS mouse because their drivers allow you to speed up the mouse movement beyond the standard (very slow) maximum speed for an Apple mouse.
These are just my experiences with Macs so take what you can. The one thing that always impressed me about the Mac OS releases is how on the same hardware they speed the machine up noticeably. Going from OS X 10.1 to 10.2 was amazing, then sure enough 10.2 to 10.3 was even better. I cannot wait for 10.4 and the additional tools.
It's still February.
You guessed it, Rush Limbaugh
Wine HQ
and
NASM

Actually it will be the Playstation 720 with "Skate or Die!!!" written on the box. Or maybe not, who knows.

Try 6 months. This is one of the reasons I will never buy software that requires the internet to be functional.

Did you actually read the link that was in the article? My guess is no. The editor made that determination on his own. Not to mention they are "sunsetting" from Quicken 98 to 2002 on the same date which is bullshit because there is not a tangible reason to do so outside of upgrades. this is why I don't on-line bill pay, let people "auto-debit" my checking account and fun things like that. You wind up getting screwed in the end.
(Yes it is a large link so you might notice this time and RTFA)
Thanks, wish I had mod points (wait I do I just cannot mod this topic since I posted!)
Kill all PACs and Politicians. Problem solved.
