No kidding. I have not heard Linus speak, but I have heard Maddog speak at the ALS and that was an experience. He gave a great talk about Linux and Education. He mentioned some great facts about player pianos, too. Quite a diverse guy!
... as I haven't seen Microsoft abusing patents yet.
Here is my favorite example of a few patents by Microsoft that may be stretching the limits of being resonable IP. Abuse? Its scares the hell out of me what they are doing.
I suppose if it had some kind of political theme or some kind of statement to make, it could have some value. I mean, what was the point? It seems you could hire the services of rotten.com to really disgrace some company in a bad way.
Something like this may have been good as private joke, but it got out of hand in a massive way. I can almost feel the heat from the legal team right now. Ouch, that hurts.:(
If they were balls of gas, wouldn't the heat and proximity of the sun cause the gas to escape the atmosphere? I remember something about hydrogen escaping our atmosphere into space when it gets charged by the sun's energy.
Maybe these planets are much like Mercury. Who knows, the cooler side may be able to support life. Imagine those hideous Doom characters duking it out on such a radioactive mining planet.
Yes, as an American citizen, I may be able to import this, but I have no rights or freedom to contribute or share this to others on the net. Any effort I could contribute to cryptography would be squashed by my flag waving government. So much for "The Land of the Free!"
All this because terrorists and pedophiles could use cryptography. Why not ban cars too, since they could transport evil terrorists and pedos to do their deeds? The US has some backwards politics, I tell you.
I have noticed the sudden increased advertising for the company. The benchmarks, the claims, the coop advertising. Its getting thick with FUD.
It will be interesting to see what about to happen. Usually, a company starts spending massive amounts of marketing money when it or a competitor is about to push something through the door.
I think Slashdot qualifies more as a business than as a charitable cause...
Slashdot is not work, its one of those free things in life that are fun. People learn from the exchange of information here. Its a free service that otherwise would not exist through coorporate funding due to conflicts. Outlawing volunteer services would outlaw a free lifestyle. To outlaw what I could do for free would spark a civil war as I would see it.
I get paid more than twice the average family income, but if I am restricted from volunteering at clubs, online services, etc., I'm going to be unhappy.
If there are unemployed AOL volunteers, they are pathetic if they are not also actively seeking employment while spending unusual amounts of time online.
This seems to be the definition as given by the press. Note that it cites the age range for the "average cyberpunk" without a precise defintion or references how the age group is defined. The whole article was a series of quotes including hot topics such as Iraq.
While the article contains plenty of buzzwords to entertain the typical reader, me thinks this is pure sensationalism.
you end up taking an engineering position with me as your boss- all woman, extremely attractive and a determined, strong engineer. You feel stupid, frustrated and intimidated. Not a good life.
We have a (black) woman engineering manager at our manufacturing plant who has been with us for a year. The change was dramatic as we now have someone who will tackle all problems and impliment quality solutions. Before, the engineering department was "hard of hearing" and we had rashes of "science experiments" that were creating endless loads of scrap to the huge dumpsters. If you want someone who will listen, I'd recommend hiring a sharp woman and back her all the way.
She is highly determined and works people hard, but never places blame when bugs need to be worked out. Working in an environment like this may be stressful, but very rewarding and fun.
Did I mention we have a woman plant manager? We have 450 employees and the turnover rate is low (most retire or die before they quit.)
Interact with people who have different interests, interact with people of the opposite sex.
That's a joke. When I was working on my engineering degree, I thought the world was 90% men and 10% women, with 0% women taking engineering. Four years. Hell. The bright side was there were few distractions, unless you count the bell curve: all of us were focused. It made the competition brutal.
Learn to get out and experiment with 16oz physics. It made college life more bearable.
I learned more in first 6 months of work than in 4 yrs of school.
I thought the first year of college was not going to teach me much exept how to heat networks of resistors and was quite boring; however, the next few years took full use of what I thought was worthless. Building amplifiers and logic circuits turned into state machines and then 8 bit computers built and programmed from scratch. College gave me the theory and time to become an expert and specialize in the engineering area I was good.
I also worked through college. Work also gave me opportunities, but it was the novelty of my skills I gained from college that opened doors at work. The degree also adds value when things like downsizing take place and they had to score our backgrounds in different areas. Believe me, a college degree really counts!
Why do people keep saying beta is better than VHS? Last time I checked, they both used passing tape over a helical scanning head. From what I remember, the beta just had the advantage of mechanical linkage optimized for editing (not something you do with a rental movie.)
Now,
MP3 is better than some proposed RIAA format, because it is available now for use in any way I see fit, anytime, even in bizzare configurations that might be imaginable. With music that can only be played on a memory stick, I will be stuck with the stick and the only place where they disigned it to fit. Not with my ass.
Open? Nah. You can use the website, but to get anything out of Gore, you will have to PAY him lotsa contributions. How much will it cost to get his encryption and other close minded policies turned 180 degrees around?
What I don't understand is where all the money for the Win98 update is going to do any good. Is Microsoft going to use the money to spyglass more companies so they can add more features and increase the bug pool? Is there a feature/bug list that they give out with the 98 update?

I agree that dvorak is much more comfortable to work with. I can type all day with the dvorak layout without a complaint. Qwerty feels like pounding rocks with my bare hands after several minutes. I can type faster and longer with dvorak than qwerty.
Nothing is going downhill. Just think of it as a firestorm and Linux is hot. ESR has been busy laying the foundation for the future of free software, from maintaining sunsite and now promoting Linux to the top dogs in the industry. Since Linux is hot, the folks at the top are worried about being burned. ESR is helping those who would otherwise get burned by the free software concept find a business model that will strive. He is too valuable to quit. We won't let him!:)
How does Caldera and all the other companies that have been eliminated into obscurity get relief from the current worth of the computer industry? They appear to have lost an evil game they did not start. We all lose due to anticompetitive practices and denials by a ruthless company. The PR and legal claims that come from Microsoft makes me sick. How they control the media too ought to be illegal.
The only problem with the high Jello to water ratio is that the taste lacks in such a rubberish mass. Normal Jello dissolves in your mouth quickly and all that yummy sugar is quickly liberated, making the subject happy. There has got to be a way to have a strong protein structure, yet have all the yummy sugar molecules released upon salivatating demand. There are many food thickeners and emulsifiers that might do the trick.

A big reset button to reboot? A reboot is being done every semester for those who cannot afford the "semester upgrade fee."

Why not a freely available video compression format. Is it that hard to make?
I did a 10 second avi and got 46 MB. Something tells me this would require hardware to process the bandwidth.

We should lose Caps Lock. When was the last time you used it?
The caps lock key makes a great ESC key for vi... Its one of those keys that can safely by remapped for personal use.
does anyone have any recommendations for a good Open Source typing trainer?
