I NEVER said or implied the government had any right to do these things. All I said was the government was not going to going after warez kiddies pirating Photoshop, 3DMax, or the new Prodigy album. They're after different fish. I don't like the idea of this kind of monitoring either, I was answering a specific question. (not to be rude, but don't put words in my mouth)
And don't forget those 3-man-crew water-balloon slingshots -- 250 foot range!
Ahh, many is the time we would get onto the roof of my friends three-story house and launch balloons, fruit, tennis balls, and cake in any and all directions. Though I do believe we got significantly more range out of it than 250 ft. Balloons filled with a little water soluble paint were fun.
Sniff, sniff, that was more fun than a bag of kittens and a hammer:)
I always thought it would be fun to take a bottle of 'Pure Capsicum Oil' Available at your finer specialty food markets and mix it with water or oil (whichever works better) and spray people with it.
I had a lot of problems with this when I was using vid cards with non-accelerated drivers (Rendition Verite 1000 / 2100 ). When I moved to a video card that had accelerated drivers, my linux ended up being as fast as windows. Actually I really think Netscape is faster in linux, but that might be an optical delusion.
2)Installation Sucks
To date - something like 30 windhuuhs installs To date - something like a dozen Linux installs
Linux is always easier. Finding drivers and getting them to cooperate under windows can be a major hassle. I remember installing Slack 2.0, that was a pain. Modern linux installs are easier than windows IMHO.
3) Applications
Not a boatload of them, but they're getting there. I spend the majority of my time in Linux doing things, not futzing with my backgrounds. Gimping, programming, running newsbot programs, looking at pics, surfing, CivCTP, putzing. Your right that there is not a lot available for Linux currently, but it is changing, and rather quickly.
4) I don't have trouble generally with this, PNP is supported fairly well in Linux now, USB is starting to be supported, it's getting better.
5) KDE is not bad at all, what are you missing from windows? Blue screens? Actually I have those also thanks to jwz & xscreensaver:)
Basically, I like it, and so do 10-15 million other people. And it's growing, soon enough I will be able to play games and run the whiz-bangiest software available.
The federal government doesn't give a damn about warez, mp3, etc. sites. They are looking for information about illicit drugs, terrorists, DOS attacks, etc. Of course in the process they would happily violate your privacy, and no doubt collect damning evidence for minor crimes if you are part of a unpopular political movement (i.e. something like protesting Mumia's death sentence).
If you look at the rest of the newgrounds atomix website, you will realize Tom Fulp is not even a little bit serious. Pico is my favorite, it's completely evil and demented and I love it.
I find them very useful for watching movies occasionally.
I bought an old commie-64 monitor for $50 a while back. It has a composite video in jack (RCA cable from the VCR). So I can watch movies without a television. Once I get my TV card working in Linux, I can ditch the commie monitor.
And when I tell them "I don't watch TV" they look at me as if to say "Well, What do you watch?"
You should see the what happens when you tell them you don't own one. It's like you told them you're dying of cancer "well we have an old one we don't use anymore, you could maybe use that..." I have had people give me this reaction almost verbatim. If I told them I didn't have money for food what would they do? Probably shrug, act embarassed and change the topic of conversation. God Bless America.
I hadn't seeen any television for about six months and then I watched some night time news show. It was some national news show, I couldn't even tell you what it was. I felt like a 12 year old, at least that seemed to me to be their target audience's education level. I was mesmerized by just how awful the news was. Also how biased and useless the content was. Does it surprise anyone that the lexical analysis of TV news shows it having a content at about the sixth grade level? Ughh.
Now I get most of my news from The BBC and various others. I certainly can't depend on the local paper's (very heavily influenced by local business interests[not in a good way]), both of which are owned by the same company. I haven't had a television for about six years now. I really do feel it's good to throw the old telly out the window, kinda like giving yourself a mental enema.
Their is nothing my cats like better than batting at dangling cables and chewing cables (they're brain damaged I swear sometimes):) I have to have my case closed. And a couple of my friends have small children. They can't leave their case open either.
The G400 wa just released last month I do believe. It's not six months old. It's supposed to be roughly on par with the TNT2 in performance and have better quality + more whizzbangs. I wouldn't know, I just got my v770 ultra Monday. I'm trying to get it setup on everything currently (95 sucks).
I don't know about that, it seems to me the original intent was for Linus and other people to have a desktop unix they could use. As to whether it's evolved away from that is another question.
You should probably ignore me though... I'm bitter because I just installed a new vid card in my box and win95 is not working correctly. I start up any 3d game and it kacks itself. sigh. Time to reinstall the OS again. Glah, I can't wait until the majority of games come out for Linux. It's so nice to be able to change your drivers et. all from the CLI.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but I thought the first version of NT was 3.1? Basically NT3.1 -> NT3.51 -> NT4.0 -> NT5^H^H^HWin2000.
Ehh, it's not that bad, but it's not that good either. I've found that my NT machine at work spontaneously crashes about 2 times a month. The one at home crashes a little less, probably because I don't leave it on continuously. But almost every time NT has crashed it has been sitting there, doing absolutely nothing. I've never had a Linux crash and I've been using it since 1/94. NT is better than win95, which is better than DOS6.0, which is better than a rousing round of intestinal surgery. But again that's not saying much.
One way to avoid this kind of thing is rotating membership. Say only people who are full-time musicians can get elected to the post and can only stay for 2 one year terms or something. Sure you'll have problems with turnover, but then it wouldn't be so bad. And make sure for god's sake the committee itself has no control over who gets elected/conned into being on the board. I think this would help keep the intentions reasonably pure anyway. Their might be problems with keeping competent people in, but on the other hand, it wouldn't get too ossified.
I was wondering that myself. I couldn't figure out how ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) meant And since it's an ASIC, any encryption scheme could be used. I'm glad someone else noticed this & it wasn't just me who thought it was a little strange. I think you're right and they were thinking FPGA.
Ummm, talking to my mother and some of her much older friends this certainly is not true. I've never had call to break anyone's fingers to dissaude them from bothering me, my mother has. As much as people like to pretty up the past and say we were so civilized, we've always been violent. As far as the people ranting about violence in schools, I have news for you the violence in schools has declined over the past 20 years. Check out an article at FAIR . There is a lot of good information out their if you ignore the TV News. I'll see if I can find some decent books of statistical analysis on this. I know there are a couple, but I can't get to the list I have them on at the moment.
I'm not saying society is perfect, I'm just saying their is a lot of misinformation out there. I agree with you that a 12 year old shouldn't be watching this film. I like south park, I don't find it objectionable, but I don't think it's for everyone. I find many things on prime time television much more offensive (at least in terms of insulting my intelligence) than SP. That is why I no longer own a TV. I won't go off on a rant about the rest of your postings, I thought they were well thought out and had some good points. I just really dislike whenever people go "The good old days were so wonderful, not like today". my $0.02
I'm actually very supprised that Jackson didn't throw the case out midway through this fiasco.
I would imagine he's bending over backwards to be fair. This will ensure that on an appeal there will be no grounds to nullify any decision he makes. He must not only be impartial, but make every effort to appear impartial as well. Of course IANAL, so take my opinion with a grain of salt or five.
As far as the cheaper goes, I can fit 13 hours of audio on 1 CD for $2.50. But that isn't necessarily useful. Like I said this ones debatable.
Well, making a mix tape might take more time, but once you're done with it, you have it forever.
Actually, I find the tape degradation is rather unacceptable in my opinion. I have some tapes that are kinda bad now. Sure there a couple of years old, but I have a couple CD's that are older than that and they're fine. Optical storage methods (generally) have a longer lifespan FWIW (I know this only applies to use weasels with CD-R's).
Mainly I'm sitting by the sidelines waiting till someone makes some HW so awe-inspiring I have no choice but to walk into a store with zombie-like glazed eyes, holding my credit card out in front of me like the eucharist chanting "gimme one, gimme one, I'll die if I don't have it".
Why not make mix tapes? It's cheaper, less work, more music, and skip-proof. Silly people.
I agree with most of what you said, especially the fact that 64MB is insufficient. I would KILL for a CD-R based MP3 portable, okay maybe not kill but definitely Maim.
1. Mix tapes cheaper Maybe? hard to tell - what specifically are we comparing? Tape -> FlashCard (tape wins), Tape -> HD/CD-R (HD/CD-R wins)
2. Less work? It's a lot easier for me to select a bunch of files and copy them to the RIO than sit around mixing different tapes/CD's to a single tape, what a hassle.
3. More music Indubitably.
4. Skip-proof So is the Rio, what's you're point?
I'm not convinced the rio is a good value, I'm still waiting for MP3-CDR players. I already have the disks burned, that's what I'm listening to at work right now. But my MP3Jukeboxen is a pretty good value, 160 Albums storage (expandable of course), infinitely configurable for about $300. Plus it has serious toy value, as well as serving as a Samba file server (incredibly useful). I think I'll be needing to buy another HD for it in a couple months.
Does anyone know how large a chip like this would be? It seems like at.35 with 100,000 gates it would be relatively tiny. So we should be able to fit 50+ of these on one PCI card. Have one 16 bit microcontroller + 16k ram on it. You should then be able to sell the PCI card and write a tiny driver to send/receive data from it. Or maybe combine 15 of these at a time on one chip and pop 4 of the chips on a PCI card, whatevers more economical. This would make an interesting card to pop in your slot. I've been wondering what to put in my last empty PCI slot...
