No longer do I need to call tech support and have to talk to a clueless minimum wage paid worker who is just reading off a list of problems and solutions written down.

But will it be easier or harder to social engineer the computer into giving you somebody else's password, than it was to do it to a human helpdesker? ;-)

  2. Re:no, I don't. on Global Warming: Do You Believe? · · Score: 2

It is recognized by most of the scientific community that humans are accelerating the trend of global warming. Granted, the Earth's temperature does fluctuate on it's own, but the point of the matter is that we are actually adding to the trends. Ever spin a bottle? Sometimes if you spin it a little, it will wobble about and maintain it's upright orientation. If you spin it a bit too hard though, the bottle might lose control and fall down. The way I see it is that we are adding to the natural fluctuations of the Earth - and that perhaps we may be instigating a dramatic climate change that would not happen in the natural cycle of things.

Reversing human impact on the environment is something we need to start taking seriously. Never in the history of man (that I know of anyways) have we possesed technology that could alter the nature of our planet to such a degree. To argue that we shouldn't take this seriously because other countries haven't is a very naive way of looking at things. Granted, the Kyoto Treaty is not really a solution, but it is a beginning, and by refusing to sign it we are giving all the rest of the countries incentive to follow in our footsteps - after all, if it isn't good enough for the US, then why should it be good enough for the rest of the world?

Global Warming must be approached scientifically, not by opinion and government policy that is rooted in economic development.

Isn't interest that everyone who mentioned "the girl" early in this thread got modded down to the 9th circle of hell, whereas everyone mentioning it now is getting modded up?

Would that be because all the early moddings were down by Slashdot editors trying to sweep the whole affair under the carpet, whereas the later ones were done by actual Slashdot users who are genuinely interested in this messy business?

Come clean, Slashdot! Tell us about Anne Tomlinson!

Hey, try browsing at -1 nested - seems like everyone who's questioned the story about the woman who "quit" (Anne Tomlinson?) has suddenly been modded down. I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but is this surprising anyone else? I think that the question couldn't really be more on topic, and they're hardly flamebaits or trolls - what's up?

Yes, I'd like to know too. I didn't see the original "Slashdot Back Online" announcement, but I did see Maswan's listing of the 3 different versions of it, with all reference to the "she wasn't actually qualified" girl removed. And of course, the message from Anne Tomlinson decrying her treatment at the hands of Jeff and Rob. And an astonishingly rare post from CmdrTaco (his only post in the last several weeks) dismissing her as a troll (and being of course sycophantically modded up to 5).

So I, and no doubt many other loyal Slashdot readers, would like to know - what really happened? Who is Anne Tomlinson? Why did she quit? Why has all reference to her been purged from the site? Why is everyone who asks about her being modded down to -1 so quickly that it is obviously editors doing it?

We have a right to know.

Why do we assume that we have as much of a right to steal and enjoy commercial music as we do to write and enjoy non-commerical software?

Because, as Larry Wall said, "Persons of leisurely moral growth often confuse giving with taking." Not that this is a popular thing to point out on Slashdot.

if you think CD prices are too high, simply don't by the CDs.

No, buy CDs from independents. You'll get your desired result (the RIAA's profits dropping), you'll be doing the right thing (buying instead of stealing), and you'll get better music, besides! Also most indie bands are much more forthcoming about having sample mp3s on their website, so you'll be less likely to buy a lemon..

Obligatory link: Inkubus Sukkubus - quality independent band, with mp3s to download.

..and a quick quick look on eBay reveals that maybe a lot of people are in the same bind as you.. lots of 675's for sale, anyway! You can get $100 for it if you're lucky..

Bowie, I don't know why you're saying (and so rudely!) that VA Linux have not done the right thing by the investor community. I personally bought some shares of @LNUX a few weeks ago for $1.56 each, and have since almost doubled my money! I think they are an excellent company with very strong growth potential.

I just think it's sad to see people writing unpleasant messages on web boards to try to influence stock prices downwards and harm other people's valuable investments.

  8. Jon Katz is a troll - I have proof! on Second Thoughts: Microsoft on Trial · · Score: 1

Jon Katz is indulging is classic troll behaviour here. Now, as we all know, the goal of a troll is to get responses - they are baiting people, hence the name. I have long suspected this to be Katz's motivation. After all, if he was in this for the money, he wouldn't be writing for a "non-profit" organisation like LNUX! But trolling becomes less and less effective as you dangle the same bait again and again.

And, as you'll see if you look at the list of Katz's recent articles, his bait has been getting very worn out indeed. Once guaranteed 300-600 responses per article, his latest efforts have struggled to get beyond the low 100's.

And so, he switches to a new tack!! He says the complete opposite! And in so doing, effectively flames his own previous point of view! He is feeding his own trolls! "On this website, Microsoft-bashing almost approaches a religion" he says? This from the man who would have us believe that Microsoft is already destroyed? "One of the problems is that our media has become a mob, lurching one way, then the other"? He's even talking about himself!

Prediction: this skilful trolling tactic will succeed admirably. Nobody will heed this warning I offer, and this article will garner over 1000 comments.

It's a sad day for Slashdot when someone can't even say a nice word about one of the traditional bogeymen (in this case, Intel) without some Anonymous Coward accusing them of being a troll. And making fun of their name. I don't think pet owning is slavery (I have a pet cat) but I don't think you should call someone a troll just because that is their screen name.

Grow up. I bet you wouldn't like it if someone mocked AMDs engineers because, say, they still haven't produced an SMP-capable chipset for their SocketA processors.

That's just not funny. You might think it's oh-so-cool to post to Slashdot with this sort of give-a-fuck insouciance, but it's hardly amusing to suggest that somebody deserves to starve and die just because the company they work for has the temerity to sell CPUs that are a little more expensive and/or a little slower than the competition's offerings.

How would you like it if someone said that you should die because of some real or imagined slight they suffered from the high school that you attend? Not very funny when the boot is on the other foot, is it?
