  1. Re:Color swatch according to the article on Universe Pale Turquoise, On Average · · Score: 2, Interesting

Ok, so I accidentally hit "submit" for the above when I meant to hit preview. Obviously color doesn't work in slashdot. Here's a link to what this looks like: http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/~ghamerly/universe_color.ht ml

  2. Color swatch according to the article on Universe Pale Turquoise, On Average · · Score: 1

The article points out that the RGB triple is (0.269, 0.388, 0.342). Assuming this is out of a scale from 0->1, and scaling to 0->255, we get values (69, 99, 87) (roughly), or 0x456357. This gives a color swatch that looks like this. The background of this box is the color they claim... seems kinda dark compared to their description.

Wolfram Research is named after its founder, Stephen Wolfram, not for the element Tungsten. See this site. So "Tungsten Graphics" isn't copying anything here.

  4. Re:Report from California 5:30am on Invaders from Space! Leonid Showers tonight. · · Score: 2, Interesting

Brought a bunch of friends out with me in the suburbs of San Diego. Unfortunately, everything south of Los Angeles was cloudy -- even the desert! Kinda wish I'd gone to Joshua Tree. However, even with 30-50% cloud coverage (high clouds, still could see stars through some of them), it was a spectacular show. Watched from 12:30 AM PST -> 3:00 AM PST, and all 12 of us saw more than 50, probably over 100, each. That's great considering that much of the sky was clouded over.

Sometimes there was a flurry of activity, and we would have 5 in 10 seconds; sometimes 2 at a time in different parts of the sky. Many of them were Leonids, and left big residual trails. It was the best show I've ever seen. Truly wonderful, despite the conditions. We'll see if the pictures turn out...

  5. ClarisWorks was awesome on Looking At Gobe · · Score: 1

Back in the early 1990's, I was an avid user of ClarisWorks on MacOS. I've always felt it was by far the best office software I've ever used, because it was so well-integrated and simple. The one thing it lacked was a spreadsheet. Today, when I have to use Word (gag), I still long for the ClarisWorks capabilities. If the same people who made ClarisWorks are doing this today, I'd expect this could be some great software. I'd buy it.

  6. Solar cell clothing on Smart Yarn and E-Textiles · · Score: 1

A neat trick would be to get solar cells on clothes. Our bodies have a fair amount of surface area that we could use to gather power for all these smart devices that we'd be wearing. Here's an article on this type of thing: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns999 9618
