Now if they'd just put in a rewind / "I want the last 10 minutes of my life back" button for those all-too-frequent situations where all of the other players are whiny, adolescent idiots...
Thought I would give this mirror a try. Now I don't speak french, but "Les problèmes de FTP" just doesn't sound like I will be getting the movie from here any time soon...:)
Instead of making a court case/big deal out of this, why not simply teach your child that it is ok to adjust or eliminate their recitation of the pledge? Children feel pressure from infinitely many sources to act a certain way or believe certain things, and this is a good opportunity to show them that only they can decide what is right for themselves. It is ok for them to leave out the "under God" part, or to instead pledge alliegance to "Queen Fragg" (thanks Calvin) even if some students or teachers disagree with them. I basically just end up feeling like causing a fuss about this is doing more harm than good. For example, kids are going to notice if they are suddenly instructed that the "under God" part is no longer part of the "official" pledge, which could cause much more "injury in fact" to some christian children than was caused to the daughter of the plaintiff here. If she was being forced to recite the pledge, with the "under God" part, I think it would be a completely different story, but this just seems like throwing rocks at a bee's nest.
Just for arguments sake, take all of the general point n' click, window, button, etc. UIs of today and lump em all together and call them the "standard" UI. Now, just pretend that somebody figures out that whole new idea A plus modifications B and C will make a UI that is superior in every way to the standard UI. It is a little bit easier to use, a little more powerful, even a little more foxy. Lets call this new UI the "metric" UI. Get where I am going with this? I guess that one only works if you live in the States, but this one might be somewhat more universal (at least to us computer geeks). Label todays UIs "QWERTY" and the new super-UI "DVORAK". Again, you see where I am going. So does this mean that I think we shouldn't try new things since I can't go to Walmart and load my car with a few kilograms of dvorak keyboards? Nah, but it does mean that unfortunately, just because something is better doesn't mean that it will become accepted. So, after somebody creates the new super-UI, I sure hope that they will figure out how to make lazy folks such as myself go for it. I wouldn't want it to turn into the "Beta-Max" of UIs.:)
