Why not talk about a "New World Order"? Some would say we're in dire need of one. I think the majority of people here are capable of discussing such things, and have valid opinions all the way around.

  2. Great project on Linux Hardware Detection Project · · Score: 2

This is one of those projects that should and will stand out in the community. This a required step in Linux's continued expansion. I applaud the effort of the folks over at madrake. A few suggested considerations (which have most likely alrady been considered, but would enjoy hearing thoughts on them):

    LDAP?
    Linuxconf tie-ins?

    Great work guys!

  3. Okay SCO. on SCO CEO Calls Red Hat a Fraud · · Score: 1

They sure know there *** from a **** in the ground. It's called being a VAR guys. There's nothing wrong with extending the VAR model to GPL land. As RedHat and many other distros have proven, it works very well actually. This comment is totally biased anyway... who's SCO's biggest threat right now? Of course they would like it to be required that anyone wishing to run Linux have to download 300MB over the net and install it all manually :). I'm seeing SCO boxes replaced all of the time by Linux boxes running IBCS. Very nice.

As of 5.9.10 you'll come directly up to a nice looking GDM screen if selecting "start X on restart" during the install. GDM defaults to launching Gnome. However, there are a sweet set of scripts that'll allow you to switch back and forth from Gnome to KDE easily. Very Nice.

  5. Sad on Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software · · Score: 2

It's sad that a solid company strongly rooted in the tradition of GPL software is the subject of the ugly side of it's own community. RedHat has contributed far more than most if not all Distros when you combine the software they have contribute to and/or developed and GPL'd. They are hustling in order to bring features to a distribution that will strengthen the perception of Linux in corporate america, and have been doing an excellent job thus far. They've done nothing wrong towards the community and if the potential is even there, I can't see it, seeing how all there critical software is GPL. It seems to me that RedHat has been VERY careful to tread this line correctly, knowing full well that if they tip, and make a mistake, they WILL lose community support, and I think they know that it IS the community that will make or break a distro in the end. I don't care if your a RH user or not... I am about half the time, but don't attack them as a company just because you don't like where they place an RPM. C'mon people. We're better than that. Any organization supporting Linux should in turn recieve our support, until they do something that fundamentally undermines the community itself.

  6. Excellent Topic on Running To The Internet (California Chapter) Two · · Score: 1

I think this is an excellent topic and he's done a great job at capturing alot of the fear/hatred/ignorance that many people in all forms of media today exhibit. To many media companies react to the internet by "extending" there company to have a presence. There just sticking there feet in the water to test it. Companies need to start diving in. They need to embrace this new medium of communication and make it a core part of there business. This isn't going to be an overnight process for companies, but the transitions need to begin. Those that complete it first will be in good standing against there peers & competitors. Today you have companies poping up on a daily basis, building there entire company on the Internet, ground up. You have overnight successes on a much more frequent basis, companies selling themselves out for hundreds of millions after being in business for 2 - 3 years. These events are breaking the mold. Remember that old business guideline that says it'll take 3 years before your company is profitable? Forget it... howabout "it'll take 3 years before your a millionaire..."? This isn't all about money. It's just an example and My Humble Opinion (TM on how radical the changes are that are taking place within the media industries, and business itself. No wonder all your business scholars are frightened. It's changing everything they know... or once knew.

A paid membership goes against everything slashdot stands for. /. is about freedom of information, freedom to share ideas, and express... it is OSS taken to journalism. You make us pay, you lose that. No if ands or buts. This isn't saying "everything in the world should be free!" or "commercial stuff sucks!". I'm not saying any of that, but you turn /. into what your suggesting, then Slashdot becomes nothing more than NY Times online or whatever... /. is much more than that. Today, it's the Linux (or gnu/linux or whatever) of Journalism. Lets keep it that way, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Lets see what happens - Rob will figure it out.
