Sheesh. Yes, performing with Mellencamp is her sole claim to fame. Also, there's some guy named "Luther Vandross" who did backup vocals on David Bowie's Young Americans and thinks he can tour based on it.

I don't think pop culture was this segregated when I was a kid, but that might be the rose-colored glasses talking. Or maybe the Slashdot crowd just ain't the target audience for her music, and I should stop reading before losing what little faith in humanity I have left.

Good question. It was asked by several reporters in the Q&A at the end of the conference call discussing the deal, with cheerfully evasive responses every time. It is worth a listen; at no time did Corel attempt to distance themselves from Linux, which would have been very easy to do at this point. Also, the embedded Real Audio player actually worked in Netscape 4.75 under Linux. Weird.

Well, there's always local Community Networks.

We used to call 'em Freenets, but I guess that term means something else now.

They usually request a donation, and may restrict you to a shell account rather than a PPP connection (but there might be a way around that, if you can run programs on their server).

  4. Free ISP for Linux? on Slashback: Behaviorism, Attrition, Elimination · · Score: 4

I got your free ISP for Linux right here: http://www.WorldShare.net.

On their front page, they state,

"Worldshare supports dial-up to the following systems: PC, MAC, WebTV, Linux, Unix, DirectPC & Sega Dreamcast"

They seem like nice folks, but I've had no dealings with them. Anyone out there had any problems?

    >for example, JMS requested no B5 fanfic be posted

Not quite fanfic, but someone on GEnie did once toss out an idea on one of the message boards that was just a little too close to a planned story, causing JMS to delay using it.

If memory serves, the fan basically sent a notarized letter saying he claimed no ownership, wouldn't sue, and was terribly, terribly sorry about the entire affair.

There was also that Doctor Who/Star Trek fanfic that some idjit actually grabbed off the 'net and published, landing the poor fanfic author in court with Paramount and the BBC.

Anyone care to research those events, and post URLs with more info? Free karma, baby...
