Just setting up your own alternative DNS system won't work, because you're still using the same network infrastructure, which would be considered under their jurisdiction. You'd either have to build an entirely separate network, or encrypt any communication strongly enough to be able to prove it's privateness(?) in court. Of course, the problems with strong encryption have been extensively discussed on slashdot before (i.e. governments don't want you to have it). --
Very intersting post indeed. But having read your disclaimer, I have to be a little suspicious. Do you have any sources with more information concerning the past of Bertelsmann? I'd be very interested in reading more on this subject...
I don't agree. Flames, trolls et al. are generally much shorter than an interesting post (ex. a clarification of a technical detail). So this is obviously not an approriate means of filtering. Of course long posts occupy alot of space on a page, but if that's a problem you can always use the threaded mode. --
I'm going to play devil's advocate here, be warned:
What's wrong with centralizing all configuration stuff into one file? I've always been a little annoyed about the chaos in/etc/. Would it be so bad to put everything in one place? As long as it's not built in such an obscure way as the win registry, I'd be very happy to manage all settings in one place.
Excuuuuse me but SuSE is alive and well here in Europe and it's not about to change. Altough most IT corporations are american, this industry is also developing in Europe (SAP), so there are a lot of ppl who couldn't care less if RH achieved a market lockin in the states.
Furthermore, not everyone using linux is obsessed with it succeding in the comercial world. I for one find it extremely useful as a learning platform for Unix stuff and development (I'm a cs student).
Their plans for the web site include: personalizations ("my.redhat.com" - really), advertising and sponsorships, content subscriptions (things like "market reports" and support will be available - for a fee), e-commerce, and licensing of their content to other content providers.
Oh my god, it's a PORTAL... ROFLMAO! Well I hope they'll make the site better, cuz IMHO it kind of sucks now...
Frank Batten, Jr. holds 25.0% of current stocks. Who is this guy?
If I may add something: Linux is about choice. Not only choice of OS, but also choice of hardware, so there you go. Furthermore, consider the general mindset of Linux developers/hackers: "if it can be done, it will". We wouldn't even have x86 Linux if Mr Torvalds hadn't thought of that when he was looking for a good opertaing sys for his 386 and found nothing. And finally: WORLD DOMINATION(gnihihi). Linux will eventually run on every fscking toaster around, and I don't care if THAT doesn't make sense;)
Well they tried and failed.. Somehow I can't imagine that publishing a crappy IDE could subvert a perfectly healthy language. Come on, there's JBuilder, VisualCafe, VisualAge etc, and for the purist, JDK + . Somehow I just don't see what all this fuss about java being destroyed by MS is about.
Given RMS's attitude towards O'Reilly (didn't he call them "parasites?")
WTF!?
Did he really say that? Come on, nobody could possibly consider O'Reilly as parasites (referring to them paying Larry Wall to work on perl)! I guess I'll have to revise my otherwise quite positive opinion of Mr. Stallmann...
Sorry, but the way in which you depict science makes it look like just another religion. I specifically disagree with the following statement of yours:
But yet, time and again new knowledge surfaces that directly contradicts a firmly entrenched religious dogma. The earth is round, the sun is the center of the solar system, the universe is older than 6000 years.
Luckily science never made such silly claims:
In the current model we use to describe the universe, which is consistent with the laws of logic and math, earth is best described as a sphere, the sun as being in the center of the solar system, etc.
In other words, saying that something really is x doesn't make sense in science (otherwise it would just be another religion). What scientists do is either observe something repeatedly and then try to find a mathematical rule which describes the phenomenon (empirical analysis), or extend an accepted theory and then see if the results match some observations. Anyhow there is a big difference between the phenomenon in itself, and the scientific explanation of it. It is only because models and theories are never accepted as definite truth and continously refined and questioned that science is making any progress at all. Consider the fact that a couple hundred years ago, it was scientifically accepted that earth was the center of the solar system. There were perfectly valid mathematical equation which explained the movement of the stars in such a model.
The only thing which makes science more "valid" than religion is the tools used to build the models, namely math and logic. Those do not depend on how the observer "feels" today, because they are abstract sets of rules. Add empirical study to those two and anybody can find out that a falling object accelerates towards earth at 9.8.. m/sec^2. In contrast, I've never been able to measure in what frequency range god is supposed to talk to me;). And that's it! It does't mean there's something "metareal" about 9.8.. m/sec^2.
The sense of wonder at the universe that you describe the the cornerstone of science! How great and wonderful is the universe! How great and wonderful the journey to try and understand it! And that's a wonderful phrase whith which I fully agree !
Actually, I've been amazed at the number of posters here who've called hemselves hackers. I always thought that an important aspect of being a hacker was that you could not give yourself that title, but rather be called that as a form of admiration...
Wasn't an easy rule to find out if someone is a hacker to just ask him? (If he responds yes, see parent post)
Yeah, Future Crew... Where the hell did those guys end up? it was thanks to their "panic" and "reality" demos that I got into coding... I remember they were talking about doing a game after "2nd Reality", but then they just disappeared.
Ok. What if I disable my DNS and connect to an IP directly? (Just teasing, but you get the picture: no rating/censoring system works 100%).

Sure, but as you said, the OS is on ROM, so after a reboot everything should be back to normal...
Annoying but not fatal.

I never paid attention in physics, so sorry if this is dead wrong:
Wouldn't a Faraday cage around the targeted device protect it from the beam? It's supposed to block electromagentic interference, after all.

What good is it to compile a couple of seconds faster when the binary is slower?
--
Yes you can. It's called the Windows Scripting Host. I'm not sure if it's installed with a default install of Windows tough...

This post just scared the hell out of me...

Yes. And a very good one at that. (IMHO, of course)

That's a great idea. A rating system for articles, and let everybody vote on them...
Given that I live in Europe. If I had made the above claim, and the company decides to sue, is there anything those guys could do to me?
My opinion? FRAUD! SCAM!

and for the few who still don't get it, the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42!
Amen to that!
;)

lol... can you say joke?
Oops: "JDK + " . "any text editor"
;)
Sorry for that
Microsoft have partially ruined Java with J++

To me Java is alive and well, and I love it...
Hehe, you won't have to wait 5 years... What will happen to it when Microsoft gets broken up by the DOJ? hehe...
WTF!?
