I can see it now.. download the divx with drm (750MB) version of our film for $19.99. You will get it at the blistering speed of 10k/s with viewing options of.. your monitor or tv-out. Oh and did i mention the movie is already out on DVD? and for stupid movies like King Kong which a dvd-rip was available around theatre release.
If they are going to get me to pay they need to come up with something more convient than:
1. Goto blockbuster.com hit coming soon to DVD. 2. Enter name of coming soon movie that interests me in fav torrent search site. 3. Download divx dvd rip from the swarm in about 2-4hours depending on popularity 4. Watch movie on my home theatre using my soft mod xbox with XBMC to display. Other people have those Dlink media players and divx dvd players.
Besides VOD they can try as much bs as they want but the only way online downloads of movies are going to work is if i cand download a movie while its in the theatre or weeks after release and only if i can watch it on my tv.
I speak from experience and people can and will use SOX as an excuse for anything and everything. The problem is auditors are now trying to understand technology and they just don't get it.
The basics of SOX is that your CEO must sign that the proper controls are in place to ensure that all changes made to production systems that affect the reporting of financial information are approved changes.
Companies can take this to mean that changes to your firewalls, mail servers and webserver need to be logged and monitored with scrutiny. And they will even send "auditors" in to take screenshots of/etc/shadow hahahahahahhaa.. It's hilarious.
Realistically it is impossible to be 100% SOX compliant and profitable. This bill will be gone within 5 years and other countries without silly laws like this will prosper in the meantime.
So yes. If there is a not an audit trail in place where someone approves of applying that patch to the linux kernel on all production machines then you are not SOX compliant. Just like if someone doesn't approve installing that critical service pack from microsoft. Without approval and test cases you will fail your SOX audit unless you pay the extortion^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H fee that anderson^H^H^H^H^H^H^H accenture is charging these days.
On the topic of using your TV as a monitor, i'm curious if anyone has done this with an HDTV succesfully. I'm talking about connecting your computer to your tv and running at HDTV resolutions (720p). Does the text look good? is it useable?
I am amazed at slashdot with everyone talking about how good thier dvd's or tv shows look on HDTV what about using it as a monitor? Is my only option for using my computer from my couch at a higher resolution than 800x600 a digital projector?
1. With a progressive DVD player and an HDTV you can get a better picture than an analog projector will give you.
2. I can't drink beer or smoke pot in the theatre.
3. Snacks and drinks are outrageously priced @ the theatre.
4. My couch is more comfortable than the ones at the theatre.
5. I can't play with my girlfriend during the boring parts of the movie @ the theatre.
6. It's much cheaper to rent a dvd than goto a movie.
7. I can make a copy of the dvd if i like it and watch it again!
So please.. stop going to the theatres.. maybe hollywood will start to produce movies that make u want to goto the theatre because the movie looks so good you don't want to wait. They have been releasing nothing but un original sequels and remakes for the last few years.
Lets see.. Replace all desktops with linux. Buy a commercial terminal services client for linux or use rdesktop.
All your clients will use terminal server to connect to big honkin Win2k Server to run their apps.
Your company is the only one to blame for writing apps that only run on windows.. If your using mfc or worse vb then your already locked into Microsoft for years to come. What do you tell your clients when their marketing department who runs macs want to look @ the numbers in your accounting system? Sorry?
Invest the money and either port your software to something open like qt or gtk.. or try to use wine or other commercial win32 libs on linux. Honestly sounds to me like you are not interested in getting your apps to run on any other platform. You've followed M$ for so long why give up on them now?
Unless Bill G's borg half is in full control this story has got to be bullshit. The winxp server is not out yet and won't be ready for production servers in april. I gaurantee you if i call ibm, hp/compaq or dell after april asking for a Win2k Server i will have one in the next few days!
They may be stopping OEM of the desktop version but not the server! FUD
This first comparison would have been valueable if the author was comparing apples to apples. In the windows solution students have access to a full pc but in the unix solution only access via thin client. Indeed the unix system is much cheaper because a full pc on each desktop is not required. There has got to be a thin client solution for windows aswell! I bet atleast the Java Citrix client would run on those same SunRays. This comparison would have been more valid if the author chose the same design for each platform! Also i can't think of any school that could get away with thin clients for their students not to mention the lack of standard office apps like m$ word. This school is definetly not teaching any programming courses with no physical access to a pc!
hahahha! that is why COM+ is going the way of the dodo. VB is the messy patchwork. If you run enterprise class websites on IIS you don't know wtf your talking about.
Online play is kinda buggy but definetly fun. The netcode is nothing like tribes2 or quake3 it definetly needs improvement but it hasn't even been released in the US yet. Most of the online servers are in the UK so i guess its not fair to judge yet. I don't play online that often but i would check the official forums. I think the game is amazing ive finished the single player campaigns and it is great fun. Definetly slower game play than your typical ctf but if you like sneaking around and taking out russians with an HK play it a little longer. The first missions are kinda boring but once u get in a little deeper and start driving tanks, choppers and the A10 it gets alot more fun.
Unfortunately im using a warez version cause it hasn't been released in Canada but as soon as i see it in the store i will pick it up!
Definetly the most amazing game i have played! When i was a little kid i remember thinking the coolest game would be one where u could be playing a kind of flight sim game where u blow away some choppers take a few hits, eject and now find yourself a foot soldier. Operation flashpoint has made that dream a reality. I find games today focus toooo much on graphics and not enough on game play. Flashpoint doesn't have the best graphics but the game play is soo realistic and the engine supports the biggest maps i have seen. I don't want matrix moves and i could care less if the hallway im walking down has fog all around. I want realistic game play with large out door maps. I thought tribes 2 was going to make this a reality but like most games these days the 3d engine has sooo much potential but no good mods. Anyways i was suprised to see flashpoint not mentioned in the article. That game has more innovation from standard 3rd person shooters than any i have seen and it doesn't make sense for it to not be mentioned in this article.
I've been working on this project for awhile. It will be released under gpl and finally free software advocates will have a chance to get laid. Never again will you have to hack into your local phone or insurance company to get names and addresses. kStalker is currently on an internal version number of.03 but 1.0 is coming soon. It currently only works in a few states but more are being added constantly.
check it out at www.stalker.org
How is this post interesting? I was thinking stupid or maybe funny.
But why would you want to? of all the im clients msim has the least features, supports m$ os only and requires exchange unless you want an @m$.com address.
I would have to agree with you. I really don't understand why everyone is complaining about this. If you dont disable the feature, or enable it depending on what is in the final product IE will add a little icon underneath certain words that allow the user to do some windows/msn specific stuff. ie mailto: links might allow you to specify which registered email client you want to use to send the email or enable you to send directly via your profile to another msn subscriber.
I don't think we can complain about this. I think we could complain if IE is injecting HTML into our webpages before they are displayed to a user. ie jamming an tag inside a form. I don't think they are stupid enough to do this.
Anyways, Don't like it? Don't use it. Plain and simple. They are not forcing you to use IE. Maybe your IT staff or your favourite website is but M$ is not.
I think you will find that first office was integrated into the os, now IE is integrated with win2k and MSN is next with Windows XP.
I for one find these features useless and am happy with IE5, win2k. Every time i hear about a new feature of XP it makes me want to use it less. I cannot see ever upgrading my win2k box. When 64bit processors are commonplace (i doubt win2k will ever support 64bit) i will look at alternatives. Go Linux!

This is just a question. But i thought apple users beeing the l33t computer graphics people that they are would require a monitor that can show 32bit color? Especially people in print etc..
I thought that max on an LCD was 24 bit and that is on a wicked SGI LCD. How many colors are these LCD's pumpin out?
I once saw an interview on tv with Bill G. The topic was about providing access to computers and the internet to 3rd world countries to help their education systems etc.. Well.. Bill G didn't think this was such a great idea. His point was that if you live off of 1$ a day your not going to go out and get a computer. I think he is really worried that people who live of $1 a day will not be able to buy his copyrighted software. Bill G is the pioneer of software copyright. He has fought to keep his code secret. So his company coming out dissing free software is not unsuspected.
I don't understand why they are going after gnutella? Why not go after something alot easier to attach like usenet? Alot of movies, mp3's, warez etc is posted on usenet everyday yet i don't see the MPAA or anyone targeting the big news servers with their threats. Anyone know why?
