  1. What are the chances? on Microsoft starts anti-Linux Group · · Score: 1

10 people assigned to closely watch Linux. They well, no doubt, be installing, tweaking, and really getting under the hood.

What are the chances that some of them will become Linux converts? :)

  2. Redhat is a starting point. on Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software · · Score: 1

Redhat Linux seems to be the basic linux distribution to me. There's nothing particularly great about it (almost every distribution has packages in some form or another), and there's nothing particularly bad about it. It's a great corporate figure head: A small, dynamic company that's making a killing on this "new" open source software paradigm.

A lot of people don't think that it's important to have that commercial side, but I think it's critical to the success of Linux, which is a good thing for everybody, even those who don't use Linux. If anything, it raises the expectations of the industry when it comes to features, performance, and stability, for all operating systems. Without Redhat, we wouldn't be taken nearly as seriously as we are today. Without a corporate entity to point at, big businesses don't even consider an option, no matter how technically superior it may be.

So I think Redhat is a good thing. More power to them. Let them become the massive Linux figurehead.

It doesn't bother me, because I know there are several superior distributions, most of which are doing quite well. That's the magic of Linux. I have a choice. I don't have to conform to the Redhat pseudo-standards, but I can still reap the benefits of the money, software, and corporate kudos that Redhat creates.

  3. Acid .. ? on Drug Use Among Programmers · · Score: 1

Strange. Most of the geeks I know who do drugs are more into acid than anything else. It's very interesting that the report didn't mention acid .. most recreational meth/E users I know also drop a lot of acid.

  4. Nice banner image .. on Mouse Recharges Laptops · · Score: 1

Did anyone else notice that the guy "driving" the mouse was giving us all the finger? As much as compaq hardware irritates me, I'm very happy to see that they have an indecent sense of humor. :-)

  5. out and about. on Gadgets of the Geek Elite · · Score: 1

It's kind of funny. I have a pager, a palm pilot, a debit card, and a camera. I don't need, or want anything else, really. The pager is useful because I'm always out and about. I only have the palm pilot because I have a horrible memory for dates and phone numbers. The debit card is great because I buy all of my geek/photography stuff on-line.

I don't even have a car. :-) Of course, a large part of that is probably because I live downtown, and the public transit here in Portland is pretty darned good.

Personally, I feel really guilty when I have a bunch of technology that I feel like I'm not using, so I find myself making excuses to figure out how to use it, which just wastes my time. Besides, I'd much rather spend my money traveling, taking pictures, and experiencing what LIFE has to offer. :-) Hopefully I'll cash out on an IPO in the near future, so I can travel, write, and actually do something useful with the rest of my life. :-)
