Well let's see, they don't know how this particular setup is configured and can't get hold of anyone who does. They aren't sure of what the settings are supposed to be so why not reboot? With a lot of problems it would have gotten them back up and then they would have time to track down somebody. There was a vald reason to do so in this case. A reboot should have restored the configurations and gotten them up unless it was a hardware problem and if that was the case they might actually get an idea of whicch hardware the problem was in. If they were networking people they would know of other ways to do it. Guess what? they're not. In this context it even made sense to reboot the firewall. They had no idea what the configuration was supposed to be, so reboot and let it start up with the services and configurations that it had stored on the hard drive. They could hardly have been in worse shape and it had a reasonable chance of working.

AMD is the only company out there that has any chance of keeping them from being a monopoly in the commodity server dept. and AMD has to win big on the Hammer to have any chance of doing it. I don't want AMD to be a monopoly either but they have to have compelling speed and cost advantages to even have a chance at the market.

Let us take a simple case. A non-sex linked trait where the dominant is neutral and the recessive if reinforced is fatal resulting in spontaneous abortion early enough in the pregnancy that it is never noticed by the parents. Both parents have an one dominant and one recessive A and B respectively. They have four children representing the normal distribution of AA, AB, AB, and BB. One child is aborted, One doesn't pass on the gene and two do pass on the gene. In a closed society a majority of that society will eventually have the recessive. It will never breed out of existance. If it is a sex linked trait that results in death before the child becomes reproductively capable it will breed itself out eventually. Unfortunately most human traits are not so cut and dried.

It is not the militaries job to start or prevent war. Their job is to go, fight and try not to die when told to fight. It is the politicians that are supposed to make those decisions. Then the politicians should get out of the way and allow the military to do what it is trained for. The only real way to avoid war is to have the capability and willingness to use that capabilty to make any nation decide that attacking you is suicidal.

If we reduced our military to one percent of its current levels we wouldn't be able to protect Hawaii let alone the rest of the US. 30,000 troops can't defend crap. From the days of the founding fathers till now the defense of this nation has depended almost entirely on our ability to project our forces onto foreign soil. From Tripoli, to Germany, and to Tokyo, we have protected out interests and sovereignty by our ability to project our forces. You may not like it but in the modern world instability anywhere is a threat to our country. We have made mistakes in the past but it can be argued that in our fear of interfering in some instances we have done more harm to ourselves and others than would have been done by stepping in in the first place. If we had been prepared and willing to step in WWI and WW2 would have been much shorter with less loss of life and property on all sides. In evey major conflict we have been in we have been unprepared when it started. That is the most costly mistake a nation can make.
