  1. Comcast already doing this? on AOL, MS & Yahoo Unite On Anti-Spam Initiative · · Score: 1

I thought AT&T was bad by redirecting me to "other" sites, but comcast takes the cake. Before, to get to my favorite reading site, Slashdot, I had to use the IP address. Now, I have to proxy my connection to my work's firewall to get to the site. A little scripting and everything is fine, albeit a little slower. From a marketing standpoint, I can see why companies are doing this; to generate more business and ad revenue. But from a user standpoint, it would be a real drag if I didn't have another "business" line to proxy my connection.

  2. Been there, done that....BUT on When Should a Consultant Question Decisions? · · Score: 1

I have been a consultant for 6 years now and have run into many of these situations. Best thing you can do is make an alternate proposal but using their embedded vendors and their solutions available to them. Most companies will be open to ideas but they have reasons to go the route they are moving in. Take Micro$ofts licencing 6 and the atmosphere the company is in. They have to make a proposal with an intended solution. That is not easy in today's market place.
That said, give them a solution that works for them and within their budjet and most times you will see they will move in that direction. Sometimes though, you will have to suck it up and go with the wrong solution. Just make sure your documentation is up to par and give them your phone number so when they realize they went the wrong way, you can make somemore money by helping them to the right way.

  3. User prefs on 2.4, The Kernel of Pain · · Score: 1

Ok, so I want to jump on the band wagon here and remind everyone that ".. its designed around user preference, and development will always have a different feel for each person or user."
To give you an idea, here is my machine:
850mhz celeron (clocked to 1.5ghz),1.5 gb ram, 180 gig raid 10 HD, Ati rage pro 16m, 3comm nic, MDK8.1 with 2.4.17, Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo on usb, sidewinder usb joystick, epson 880 usb printer, lexmark color laser usb, sony 21" monitor. I have yet to notice any problems or "lags" in my system. I play kohan and my box also is the head unit for BigBrother monitoring system (28 oracle servers). I also have a qmail server running for my company, and ftp, and file server, and print server, and web sphere, and oracle, and tomcat. Even with 45 users pounding my system, I can still get in a quick game of kohan or quake and no one notices. I love the new 2.4 kernel. But it may not be for everyone but its only my opinion.
