  1. Re:copying on Software Transferability? (or the lack of it) · · Score: 1

But this is exactly what the RIAA and DMCA folks want. They want to essentially license out a copy of an album for you to listen to. Just like software, you wont "own" anything, but merely have the right to listen to it, and NOT make copies. I bet they would be more than happy to emulate the computer industry and make audio CDs non-transferable, but WHO would put up for that? Its utter garbage in the case of audio CDs, and garbage in the case of software CDs too. The software people just have more riding on this issue, and so are devoting more resources to it.

  2. many great games, but loderunner ownz my heart. on Old Games that are Still Alive and Kickin'? · · Score: 2, Informative

Personally I am in love with lode runner. I have never played lode runner 3d for the n64, but I have a copy of the mad monks revenge, which I originally played under windows 95. I played and beat it under win95, and twice under win98 (I ran 98 for a long time, and that OS made it through two or three of my main machines). ANYTHING by lucasarts is fair game (day of the tentacle and indiana jones and the fate of atlantis are two that I own and have played frequently). The original warcraft and then warcraft two got more play from me than starcraft plus every FPS I ever played. I just reinstalled warcraft II on my machine yesterday, actually.

Do you have any wish or intent to have the Post make a correction to their article? I don't know any of the numbers, but it seems to me that a lot more people read the Post than Slashdot. Personally I would want the Post readers to know what I really said, and I also think that the Post would be obligated to make such a statement, to maintain their own 'integrity' and accuracy.

Even if this were the case, which I dont think it is, this is a terrible idea. Remember what happened to germany after the first world war? They were de-ci-ma-ted. Obliterating a country is a really good way to rally them together and make them desperate enough to listen to ANYONE who promises to make things better. On top of that, the majority of Afghanistanis dont know where New York is (hell, how many Americans know where Afghanistan is?), dont have much influnce upon their government. I recommend The CIA World Factbook 2000 entry for Afghanistan would be an interesting read.

I remember Nintendo saying that they were making a video game system and would focus on making it a video game system - no frills, just cold hard sleek video game machinery. If they are actually making a dvd attachment as the previous poster said, I doubt it will make it to America. Lots and lots of cool peripherals that Nintendo makes never get out of Japan.

  11. Re:Taboos on Roasting Sacred Cows · · Score: 1

Hey, we're not only talking about p(a)edophelia here. We are talking about SEX. Sex is the ruling taboo here. And sex is something that you dont talk about, especially with little kids. So if you not supposed to talk about it, you sure as hell aren't supposed to do it with em, right?

If sex were a more open topic, perhaps it wouldnt be as emotionally traumatizing for a child to say "Mummy, Uncle Ralph had sex with me". Then it would be easier to punish uncle ralph. (What the punishment would be for p(a)edophelia in such an enlightened society, I cannot guess). This is a very slippery slope, but society has a very ignorance based attitude towards sex - what our kids dont know, they cant do. Sexual Education classes start around age 11 now, which is a good start, but if its always been taboo, suddenly talking about it at age 11 won't bring it into the open, and often SEX remains taboo even after such classes for exactly that reason.

The most legitimate logic against p(a)edophelia that I see in our society is that while a citizen is under the age of 18 their parent/guardian is responsible for making their decisions. This raises the question of what happens when Mummy says "Yes suzie, what Uncle Ralph is doing is OK". If suzie didn't grow up in our society, she would probably be emotionally fit. This is assuming that both Mummy and Uncle Ralph are loving relatives with a serious concern for Suzies well being and happiness.

The problem with p(a)edophelia (and, in fact, lots of problems having to do with sex) is that it is often done merely for the gratification of Uncle Ralph with no thought for suzie (whether she is 4 or 40 or black or white).

Now that I think about it, most problems having to do with people have this problem too.

  12. Three things.... on Say Here Why Sklyarov Should Go Free · · Score: 1

I feel that the Feds and Adobe are participating in some playground style bullying here. Skylarov was let into the country, allowed to give his presentation and then arrested. I dont think this is going to discourage others from writing similar software. Its just going to keep them from wanting to visit the US.

I also do not believe that the software Skylarov wrote is illegal. Its the same argument the gun lobby uses. Guns dont kill people, people kill people, right? Well, Software that can be used to bypass copyright protection doesnt break the law, people who use software to bypass copyright protection break the law. It is for the end user to behave in a legal and responsible way.

Nor do I think that this kind of copyright protection is legal. Once I purchase an item, it is mine, to do with as I please. I do not look forward to a world where every piece of information and even every item is owned by a corporation and merely licensed out. (Ever read the Philip K. Dick book where the guy has to stick a quarter in his front door to get out of his apartment?)

We've all heard the horror stories (or seen the sucky movies) about some american going to thailand, or china, or mexico or [insert foreign country here] and being wrongfully imprisoned for X number of years. I imagine thats what we must look like from most of the rest of the globe.

Oh yeah. And remember how pissed off we were when China wouldn't give us back our spyplane crew?

Finally, I think we could have found a better, friendlier way of settling this dispute than to stick the offending programmer in jail.

While I love both authors, I agree with the parent. Something that is 'easy' or 'fun' to read is not neccessarily good by inference. Terry Pratchett writes hilariously funny books, which are usually fun and quite easy to read through. Douglas Adams' books don't breeze by as easily - where Pratchett would toss in a dozen spontaneous spoofs/gags you find Adams placing one well thought out and brilliant comment. Pratchett may be the funniest shit in the world, but Adams is just god..er.. good writing.
