It appears that Phat Noise works with Linux. I suppose the Music Keg will as well.

  2. Perspective of Canadian Software Engineer Student on Software Engineering Body of Knowledge · · Score: 2, Informative
I'm currently enrolled in a Software Engineering program at Lakehead University in Canada. The Software Engineering program is undergoing examination by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) If the program is approved and work for four years under a qualified Professional Engineer, I too can be come a Profession Engineer in Software Engineering.

I was speaking to one of the members of the CEAB who visted LU on Monday. He recieved his P. Eng designation first in Electrical Engineering then later in Software. He said that the purpose of the Software Engineer should be for critical systems, namely those that if the fail, would put people in danger. The same as Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical or Civil or other Engineering professions.

This doesn't mean that only software engineers can work on such projects. It means that before the software is used it must be approved or 'stamped' by a Software Engineer with a P. Eng designation.

This is not currently required by law in Canada (AFAIK).

Again, this doesn't mean that all programs have to be written by software engineers, or approved by engineers. It is just proposed for software that is life-endangering.

    For more information:

P.S. Education alone does not an engineer make! It is the combination of education and engineering.

P.P.S It is also possible to become an Professional Engineer without attending an accredited program. Several requierments must be met but it is possible.

6.1. Newer Non-CDR DCs and workaround Thanks to DJ Motion from isonews, jc, OEM, and Xeal on dcwarez.

The new DCs have their BIOS programmed to prevent booting CD(R)s which have audio (audio boot data in this case) before the game data (formally known as the MIL-CD format). Not nice. Especially considering nearly all previous games - including ECHELON rips - work like this. When buying a Dreamcast, look for Dreamcast units manufactured BEFORE November 2000. There have been some units manufactured in Nov. 2000 with the new BIOS revision that will not work with CDR's. Note that retail box type (regular or Smash Pack) does not matter, only the manufacture date of the unit, which should be visible through a small window on the Dreamcast retail box. Also identified as not working with CDR's are the Sakura Taisen and Hello Kitty special edition Dreamcasts available in Japan.

So it looks like data only CDRs should work, just not audio _before_ data.

  4. My experience ( CSci vs. CEng Tech vs Soft Eng) on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1
I started out in Computer Science at Univeristy of Waterloo. Lots of math (It was under the faculty of mathematics) and little programming in the beginning)

Then to McMaster University for Computer Science under the Faculty of Science. Still lots of math more science (duh!) and only a little CS

On to Mohawk College for Computer Electronics Engineering Technology Co-op. Very structured program heavy on the electronics, light on math, so-so on programming. Graduated (w/Honours even!)

Present: Lakehead Univeristy for Software Engineering. Transfer program into third year from College. Heavier math than College. Still some electronics and some CS courses (About 35%/65% split)

Which is better? I have no idea. Software Engineering will allow me to become a P. Eng. however Software engineering is still in a state of flux. No two schools seem to agree on what SE is. In my experience, engineering had a heavier course load and less flexibility than a CS program.

    Best of luck. Lnical

  5. Several DVD Players do not play CD-R. on Is Sony Turning Its Back On CD-Rs? · · Score: 1

This is not a conspiracy from Sony! (Note: This is in Canada I don't know about else where in the world) Last month, I was shopping for a DVD Player. In the store I went to there were ~ 20 different types of players. Only 3 played CD-R (Technics, Hitachi and Zenith) All the others (Sony, Marantz, Panasonic, Denon) and other DVD players from Hitachi Technics and Zenith) did not play CD-R. Even the ~ CAn$1200 DVD-Audio Player would not play them. It seems that only players designed specifically for CD-R can play them (i.e. Dual Laser players) It is possible for one revision of a player to play CD-R and another not. (This happened with some low end Zeinth players) lnical
