It's nice to see the world moving forward and advancing on these technologies. We need to move forward and continue to make new things that could be used in the future but still have some commercial viability now.
It would be nice to go all out and build everything in the future but there may not be a market now and we all remember the great crash of 99-00.

But, if I get access to one of those phones then I definetly will because places are starting to wire up that offer the media that you want..._now_.

well...if AvantGo (avantgo.com I believe) provided a service for cell phones then it would work quite nicely for a lot of news pages. It basically works the same way browsing for a Blackberry works.
You send a page that you want to a central server which parses and formats it. It then sends it back to your phone and boom...you get images, text, links and everything. I use it for my Handspring all the time and it downloads many of my favorite sites...of course I wish it could compact Slashdot further but I think Cmdr Taco may have to talk to the AvantGo people about it.

From a coders point of view: this product looks really sw3333t. The future is mobile devices but to get there we have to start developing for products that can exist soon so that we will have the demand for more powerful mobile devices in the future.
Having several starting points now (with all the different platforms) means that in the future there will be quite a few products as well since a particular language/product will appeal to certain people.
Thus, implementation now means more devices to implement upon in the future.

I've been using Snapstreams' PVR since the Winter Olympics and I've found it to be an amazing tool. It's pretty simple to use through the web interface but the web interface is slightly slow...
Although the version I have currently encodes to WMV (then I use the MS media decoder to convert it to fixed version of wmv and then use virtual dub to convert it to divx) the newest version (Quartz) can encode right to divx =)
If you have an older version then you can upgrade to Quartz for free.
Also in Quartz, there is a service you can buy that uses .Net technology and allows you to surf a tv guide and record straight from that.
But...since I prefer recording shows at custom lengths I find the text interface pretty easy to use (I even recorded all the World Cup games using the PVR).
So...PC PVRs aren't all that bad...at least Snapstream has a good PVR...I suggest it to those who like good software, it's well worth the cost.

I find that if I spend a day programming or what not then I'm great with people. But as soon as I start surfing the net and chatting with people I become way less tolerant of everybody.

I think it has to do with how long it takes to communicate a thought. Online you see the entire thought in one shot, whereas in person it takes time to hear the whole conversation. Basically a speed difference. The speed is the main difference.

In terms of tolerating people of other ethnicities I notice no difference, in fact I'm more likely to talk to people within my own group of online g33k friends in real life. We talk fast and keep it short.

But that area is now not for taking notes but for learning the problem areas. It's better to target what is not known rather than to repeat what is known. The professors do not see it as a threat as if they did then they would not participate.

there's a lot of problems associated with being underwater...

First off, there's a limited range where you could use it.

Second: You'd have to make sure you didn't collide with anything (I'm sure you'd hire a formet sub captain or something).

Third: it's not all that clear underwater. It's only clear in the shallow areas like tropical and what not. But in the deeper areas it's not all that clear and so you wouldn't see much.

Fourth: the upkeep on submarines runs millions a year, so the cost is gigantic.

    Now the pros:
First: you can bring illicit drugs into the country and nobody is gonna stop you (how do you stop a submarine without blowing it up?) and if they do stop you, then you just flush the stuff down the drain.

Second: It's the mile deep club.

Fundamentally yes because text books don't cover everything that the Professor may teach. Also, people learn in different ways.
Now you may be saying but aren't they just reading online? The answer is yes and no. Yes in that there are text book references but only the important parts have been extracted (not the filler). Secondly, the professors lectures have been videotaped and are available online (without all the umms and errrs).
This helps those who learn by seeing and/or reading. Also, the system also tests and gives assignments that must be done prior to class. This way the professor can find out what the class is struggling to understand and better explain that during class.
The concept of the system is new and it wasn't popular last term (September to December, here in Canada our school terms are 4 months and you typically take two a year although I've been doing continous school since 1999), but now that the online system is in place it's caught on like wildfire. The results are impressive as well, the tests are no longer easy as all the students know more, those that like to skip class still learn everything.
So basically, the text book is now the supplement to the course. In no way is the course being moved online as the student professor relationship is still important. It's just that the class is now a QA time rather than just take notes notes and more notes.
