  2. The light side of the DMCA .... on Sklyarov, Elcomsoft Plead Not Guilty · · Score: 0

While I hate the DMCA, I admit that in certain areas it might serve a good purpose...

There are thousands of warez sites right now, distributing game cracks and justifying it as "Educational Purposes". The DMCA will end this for good (if its not knocked off as inconstitutional)

  5. There is NO JUSTICE ANYMORE on HDCP Encryption Cracked, Details Unreleased Due To DMCA · · Score: 0

Ferguson said in his article: 'I simply cannot afford to be sued or prosecuted in the US. I would go bankrupt just paying for my lawyers.'

When someone is afraid of getting in a lawsuit because the lawyers fees alone would cost him his LIFE'S SAVINGS, then I say there is no justice in this country. The legal system has become so rotten that the average person cant afford the price of justice anymore.

  6. Electronic Ink on Samsung Introduces 24-Inch LCD · · Score: 1

Electronic Ink is a technology under development by Bell Labs and Xerox. In the future, it will allow bigger and cheaper displays than LCD. And with less defects, too.

It works by having microscopic particles floating in a kind of "ink". These particles are blue on one side and white on the other(but I guess they could be any color you wanted). This "ink" is placed in cells on the display (like pixels). The cells will then change color when a voltage is applied, sort of like a pixel on an LCD screen. (The voltage will make the microscopic floating particles turn white-side-up or blue-side-up, so you can have either a white cell or a blue one)

For a better explanation (I know, Im not a great writer), read this: http://www.howstuffworks.com/e-ink.htm

  8. Intellectual property and the GPL overseas on GPL 3.0 Concerns in Embedded World · · Score: 1

Has anybody ever wondered that the GPL may not be valid in other countries because of legislation differences? Or maybe even copyright could be invalid ?

As far as I believe (and someone please correct me if Im wrong), to obtain copyright over a piece of IP work (for instance, a computer program) in the United States, the author only has to insert the appropriate notice, like:

[This software is copyrighted. (c) 2001 Authors name]

But maybe some countries require some sort of registration for intellectual property ? That is, you have to register your code with a government agency, for proof that you are truly the author, or your IP claims wont be valid.

Does anyone on /. know something about this?

  9. The purpose of college admissions on Cal Schools May Nix SAT In Admissions Process · · Score: 1

The purpose of college admissions depends on the intended ROLE for each college/university. Higher education institutions are VERY different from each other, and they do not all share the same goals.

Think about a top institution, that intends to educate the nations BEST talents. Their admission policies MUST choose students on the basis of academic merit. This necessarily entails some discrimination, because the best students (with regard to academic merit) are often NOT minorities.

On the other hand, if a college is to provide edicational opportunity to the poor/underepresented minorities (and I think this is the role that public institutions should go for), then a different set of admission requirements is in order (or you might have NO admission requirements at all).

The point is, no single system of admissions is best for all types of school.
