Thank you for the links. Btw: Well, first off, know that VC++ isn't really c++
    I doesn't matter, I also use DJGPP and that's C++.
And I'm sorry but I won't forget everything I know about MFC. I will still be using it for Windows( until .NET programming gets common)

Computers haven't changed all that much, have they? Sure, we now use GHzs to measure speed, nut that's just 1,000,000Hz, it's not a different measure. Computers have been working in pretty much the same way since then and it kind of reminds me the way cars continue to use the same archaic technology used back in 1900, only greatly refined. This is simply because it's easier (and cheaper) for manufacturers to maintain a single common base for their products for as long as possible before throwing it away and starting all over again.
The choice, I believe, is ours: Mass production or revolution?
We have to find a balance, especially in the computer world (Pentium 11, anyone?).

  12. Never mind what's fair... on AOL, Microsoft Squabble Over Control of Online Music · · Score: 1

Microsoft will win. It's as simple as that. Most of my friends use already using Windows Media for downloading clips and stuff, and it is my humble personal opinion that RealPlayer (although quite fast)... kinda sucks. It would clutter your system tray, and bombard you with that stupid channel commercials from time to time (and me being on the other side of the world, the name AOL doesn't mean anything). The Windows Media formats were quite a joy to use for users who didn't want a fuss. There was nothing to install (>= WinMe), and it works.

And really this is kind of vain. It's two proprietary formats.Who cares which one will win?
But personally , i would prefer WM, since it comes with Windows (note this phrase, that's the way the whole Winworld thinks, convenience is above everything). And this is actually Microsoft strategy, to turn their OS into a everything-but-the-kitchen-sing , all-singing all dancing, erm, thing.
But Windows Media Player is sooooooooo slow on my PC.And i noticed that all players would play MP3 much better than WMA's , which need all of your processing power.
But rest assured, if Microsoft tries to stop us from playing a cross-platform format like MP3, it will lose. Oh yes, it will lose...
.....And has anyone else noticed that Microsoft's making itself extremely vulnerable to the courts? I guess it will break up after all.

  14. The problem with DLL's on Linux Descending into DLL Hell? · · Score: 3

As a Windows coder myself, I know a fair bit about DLL, and I know it's not the way they work that's causing the so-called Windows 'DLL-hell'. It is the fact that Microsoft allowed programmers to include core windows libraries with their programs to ensure compatibility (and those programs could replace the windows ones too). Sure, its cool to keep your exe size down by using a few system libraries dyn-linked, but most people think its better to shove all these libs into their installer than static-linking (i personally like to build one or two-file apps). DLLs have their use (e.g when you want your program to be easily upgradeable, or as plug-ins), but people you don't have to use them. It's not cool, its confusing and it serves little purpose.

And all this DLL hell stuff...I haven't met with a single DLL problem since Win95(i havent met any problems on linux either)...And WinXP will have even better core DLL protection and stuff...

By the way, one really (seemingly)cool thing about .NET programming is that you can use the .net dlls to access a huge number of cool .net functions for RAD programming. We shall wait and see though...

  16. a) Wrong about .NET b) Corel's Last Chance on Corel Chief On Corel, Open Source, .NET And Others · · Score: 1

First of all , I have to point out that some of you got the entire .NET thing all wrong. The spreadsheet example isn't like .NET as it exists now, but it is exactly like the Sun and ASP (Application Service Provider) thing.Sun wants thin clients everywhere (It has already claimed that the PC 'is ridiculous) and all the serious number-crunching running on ('f course) Sun's big fat expensive servers. It's quite the same thing with ASP, with big companies giving you access to their apps through the Internet after paying for rental.
Both concepts scare me to death. What if these huge servers stop working( Think:'Excel is down- Try running it later').Surely, they want us to think that they simply won't. Read Murphy's Law aloud and repeat that statement if you dare. And do you really feel safe knowing that you can't work off-line(or even access your data, which will be held on their servers too)
Microsoft's .NET isn't all like that.If you want to know more about what .NET is all about, visit Microsoft's site or any other .NET dedicated site. The concepts behind it really are bright and may mark a new era of communication (XML of course being the base of it all), but that depends on Microsoft. The current state of the Internet and the amount of technologies coming and going at the speed of light have confused not-so-poor Bill's megacorp. On the one hand, they want their (quite nice I have to say) .NET way to work. From the other hand, they're scared to death by the ASP model and the possibility that it may succeed (leaving them behind like the time they tried to ignore the Internet). So they are trying to do both in a way. So, don't worry, the fog will clear out soon enough and we will see who won.

Anyway, back to Corel. For those of you who haven't noticed, this is their last chance before they go 'poof',since they screwed up one time too many. I really hope they manage to do what we want them to do( that is, bring .NET to Linux), and do it right. Otherwise, Corel dies,Microsoft loses money, Linux & Windows stay separate for ever (since neither of them will die away in the next few years), and .NET is doomed to be a Windows Only Thing. Which is , of course, er, bad.

Oh, and that 'open source' definition by that Corel chap, isn't that an oxymoron? Oh, well.

I think both companies should just shut up , do their stuff really work right, and let the consumer choose.
And now some advice for the two companies:
    a) Double-check what you say. If you want to accuse the other company of something, make sure it is completely true. They will surely find a way to fight back, but it will be less embarassing.
    b) Ask the consumers! They know best, cause they could be using products from both companies, and they know if something just doesnt work with the other company's implementation.
    c) Don't say anything for something that's not yet out.Sun doesnt know much about .NET and ,frankly, neither do most of us, but clever people will wait and see before deciding what is good and what is bad. .NET can very well be marvellous but then again, so can Sun's future technologies.
So, don't write anything off just yet....Let the truth be decided by us.
