  1. Re:Security by not evolving on Qmail At 10 Years — Reflections On Security · · Score: 1

I agree with the parent a hundred percent. Qmail is too much of a chore to setup and admin. And when something does go wrong, it's very hard to troubleshoot. Personally I prefer postfix anytime. I have done setups for both and just prefer the config layout for postfix. Of course you can change the postfix config layout anytime, since it's configurable.

That sucks for those who want to dual boot windows. But we have to remember that Bootcamp is still in beta.

What about tables, graphs, and equations? While you can use images to represent these, it makes it harder for other people to modify them later. LaTeX is easier to read and write than XML and is an open format.

In my past life as a scientist, I actually submitted a few. The physics journals we submit to actually prefers LaTeX. But they usually want you to use a custom document class. The situation may be different in other fields.

  6. Re:iPod and UFS on 60GB iPod Coming? · · Score: 1

That guy from Harvard was really confused. To further clarify this, UFS refers to the data format of the file system (that is the layout of the bytes of the files on the disk). Anybody can write an independent compatible implementation of UFS that can read or write files in this format. In the same way that you can have multiple implemtations of JPEG readers/writers, you can also have multiple independent impmentations of a UFS file system.

  7. seems reasonable on WINE May Change To LGPL · · Score: 1, Flamebait

But wine will always be a bad idea regardless of the license. You can never keep up with MS changing and adding to the API all the time. You have to change with every new release of popular programs (e.g. Office). And it doesn't do too well as a porting lib for win programs because u still have to have code to be bug compatible w both systems (win32 and wine). It even breeds such horrible children like the horribly insecure Lindows.

  8. dents are both expectecd and welcome on Standard Model Takes A Dent · · Score: 3
Even with the great experimental success of the standard model, physicists have known from the start that it was not complete. It has at least 19 arbitrary parameters. This is very far from most physicist dreams of a single coupling constant that governs every interaction in the universe. Note that the term "standard model" was used instead of "standard theory", when in fact it is really a scientific theory in every sense, to acknowledge the presence of these numerous free parameters.

Of course, even before this so called "dent", there is the fact that there is insufficient experimental data to confirm observation of th Higg's boson. But the previous success of the standard model leads us to believe that this confirmation will eventually come. And naturally, it was expected that at higher eneries the standard model will need to be replaced with something more general.
