The main thing that schools want to block is porn. Please don't reply and tell me that kids should be able to look that up at school. There is a difference between naked images and porn. I agree that americans have a hang-up on nudity, but nobody reply and tell me that since children are curious about sex they should get to find out by looking up porn.
Yeah. Children are curious about sex. That doesn't mean that mommy and daddy let them watch them to satisfy their stupidity. There are a thousand ways to teach children about sex besides letting them watch the latest gangbang video download. Schools do teach them about that stuff. What's left is the parents responsibility. Yes! Parents have a responsibility.
There's a simple solution to this problem. First, set up a proxy that blocks the known stuff i.e. playboy.com. That won't get rid of everything but it will block a lot. And the truth is you really don't see porn that much on the the web if you don't look for it. Second, require students to login when they use the internet and let them know their activity is being logged. If some don't care and go after it anyways, then just ban them from the computers.
If I were in Congress I would start the whole moon program up again. That would jumpstart the economy. Sure it was expensive, but it gave us a huge economic boom. Not only that, but I think one of the reason the USA seems to be stagnating is because we have always been a frontier nation. We've been focusing inward for too long. Let's go to the next frontier. (I refuse to call it the final frontier.)
The G8 countries like the US have declared that they would bring the wonders of the information age to underdeveloped countries. I guess they can suck on that for all it's worth.
There is a very simple way to get around this problem. Make it illegal to patent a drug that can save the life of potentially millions. Then let the government offer prizes to anyone who makes advances and shares them with humanity.
It is not communism to demand that you share a life saving invention with mankind. Communism is about the redistribution of physical wealth, which is scarce. Intellectual property can't be redistributed because it is a concept in your mind. Lots of people are dying because of a fairy-tale that we are telling ourselves.
Thanks for the link. I assume you work for Mandrake. Freak isn't for me because I have dial-up. I was just wondering. If you can tell me, how much consideration has Mandrake put into setting up a subscription service where the cd's are mailed out ever month or so. Walnut Creek does this for BSD I believe. I would definitely pay $40 a year for that kind of service. More depending on what it was like.
I've really been wanting to donate to you guys for a long time. It's easier for me to cough up a little bit at a time than all at once. You guys are one of the few distros that really seems to add something other than just packaging. Thanks.
No. The point I was trying to make is that it wouldn't cost $350 to make if they didn't aim for the cutting edge. There's no way a group of volunteers are going to be able to compete on the cutting edge of game hardware. But how much would it cost to knock up an SNES now. Not much. If the SNES used cds instead of cartridges and had a free development kit I would definitely buy one. Most geeks would too. The fun of making your own game, burning the cd and passing it on to a friend would be enough for me. You can do that with a computer, but it doesn't have the same effect.
I'm using 8.0 beta 2 and I haven't had any problem with fonts. The font server is still there. I should mention that I installed an incredibly huge number of fonts on my system. Maybe over the 1000 mark. I haven't had any slowdown. That's one of the reasons I'm so happy with this release. It's so fast. Mandrake 7.1 was slow on my system. I'm using the beta now and I'm not even sure if I'm going to upgrade until 8.1. It's that good.
Actually for those of us who don't have broadband cheapbytes is better, and I'll still donate to mandrake. One of the nice things about donation is that it doesn't all have to come out of your pocket at one. A little here, a little there.
I've heard a lot of people say that the box edition isn't as good as the free cd. Ironic huh? That's why I never buy the commercial version. But I am going to donate to Mandrake.
The donation thing was great. In fact, I had been planning to send them an email asking them if they would set up something like this. I like to just get a cheapbytes cd, because I'm familiar with them and it's just easy for me. But just taking the free version makes me feel guilty because these guys sure have worked their hearts out.
It's also great because you can donate to the particular section of mandrake that your interested in. Like kernel or installer. I personally would love a subscription model where I payed so and so a month to get develepmont iso's. I think Mandrake is doing this. Tell me if you have any info about it.
I've been using Mandrake 8.0 beta 2 for the last week. It's just awesome. I used to be very cynical when I heard people claim that Linux would take over the desktop world. I ate those words when I installed. KDE 2 rocks. GNOME rocks which suprised me even more. Mandrake rocks.
Yes, I know that there are some women on slashdot, but I'd say it's 80% male. I just hate how slasher seem to run off anyone who doesn't fit their mold. Most guys don't go out of their way to let everyone know their guys. Still you can figure it out. I get the impression the not many women let that out, because they don't want to get hassled. But like the guy below said, it's annoying when they point out the fact that they are female just to get modded up. So maybe the silent ones are better.
There are some really good posters on slashdot. But there are also the ones who get a thrill out of insulting other people and modding them down. They do it to make up for their own self-consciousness. But I guess the main thing is that most women aren't as interested in tech related stuff.
It's not that I think that women are smarter than men. (Well, at least they aren't smarter that me.):) It's just that I like seeing something that doesn't fit the slashdot norm. Variety is the spice of life. Slashdot is as unbalanced as the republican party. I hate the fact that lots of the good articles are put into the slashboxes and not the frontpage. If it doesn't have something to do with linux or fighting the man, we probably won't see it.
Anyways, I wasn't trying to push anyone's buttons. When I noticed the author was a woman it just made me realize their kind of scarce here.
I like different languages. Different human languages, different programming languages. Just because I can say the same thing in English doesn't mean I wouldn't like to learn French.

I have to disagree with you. English is the international language of the Western world. Everyone may not speak it, but for anyone involved in foreign affairs you better learn it. Esperanto will never be the international language because there will never be one. Not in the next 400 years at least. The European Union has chosen English as the international language. English is also the defacto language of air traffic controllers.
You point out that English is not the most common language in the world. That's beside the point. One billion people may speak Mandarin among themselves, but the international language that they use when dealing with foreigners is not Mandarin.
English is not the universal language of course. There never will be one. Esperanto failed because no ones going to learn an artificial language and then speak to someone who knows that artificial language also. One will learn the others language before that happens. There is also the fact that real languages have evolved for millennia. They have quirks that esperanto and other artificial languages don't have. Their very disorder is an asset. They charm.
Instead of bringing the wonders of porn and the internet too undeveloped countries, why don't you bring food and clothing to people who don't have any. There are plenty of homeless shelters in America that need help. If you just don't like people then help the local animal shelter for God's sake. I'm not saying it isn't good to help underdeveloped nations catch up, but wouldn't it be better to train someone without out a house some computer skills. Then they might find a job.
Do you know how many children don't ever get christmas gifts? How many people just want a ham and I don't mean radio? I'm not questioning your intent, but those six months you have could change someones life. Do you really want to just introduce someone to yahoo?
Hell! The SNES was the greatest console ever in my opinion. If they just knocked up a souped up version of that and gave away the development tools, I'd buy one. It would be cheap and easy to make. I don't mean exactly like the SNES. With all the new technology, you could make a nice platform with some good technology.
Why is it that everyone wants their games to push the limit of technology? The reason I haven't bought a console since the SNES is that developers have gone to that crap over actual strategy and plot. All the games now bore me.
I also miss the days when games were clean. Everyone says Nintendo was too restrictive in an attempt to target their market toward the younger set. That's bull. There were plenty of bloody games for Nintendo. Remember Mortal Kombat. Look what kind of games the other consoles allowed. I remember one game where the point was to stalk people and kill them. Does anyone else miss fun clean games like mario, metroid, and final fantasy. (pre-sony final fantasy)
Yes it's good to spend money. That's what makes the economy go round. The circulation of money is a lot like the blood in the body. But microsoft is just sucking money up and holding it. They do spend money, but not as much as they take. The money that they have has effectively vanished from the economy. Trickle down economics only works if the people at the top don't hoard it.
The notion that primitive people didn't have privacy is a fallacy. Villagers in remote regions of Africa do share more personal knowledge, but that isn't the same thing. If you live in a small town you know that there is a difference.
Like you said, part of the reason that we value privacy so much is because we are so crowded. It's a desperate attempt to retain some individuality in the crowd. Do a classic overpopulation study on rats. You'll see that as the population rises and space remains the same, they will defend their territory more and more. The world is slowly nibbling at our territory.
I was thinking from a USian perspective. As you said, copyright law in the US was started for a different reason. The promotion of arts and science. I don't think it was ever used by the government as a method of censorship. I wasn't disagreeing with your points. I think your right. I just would like to see more people concerned about the authors too.
Maybe they'll take the time to go down the street and listen to a local band. Maybe, after a while, we'll actually see some creativity being introduced back into the music business.
Have you noticed that there aren't that many local bands left. We live in an era of greed. If you can't make money off of it, it isn't worth doing. Not many people just do it for the love of the art anymore. But maybe it's just because I live in the sticks.
I love plays. Glad you mentioned it. If you have a local university, you can see some original works by some very talented playwrights. I think you under-estimate the creativity that goes into movies though. Or you have different standards than I do. American Pie, Where the Heart is, and Stir of Echos were all great in my opinion. They do a good job if you ask me. Music is a little bit more stagnant right now.
I agree with you. It just seems more balanced because slashdot is unbalanced. Women can be quite unbalanced. (Insert your radical feminist you caused every problem in my life just because your a man even though i've never met you before story here) BTW. Anne Marie was a troll, but the funny thing is that he/she got that stuff from real feminist propaganda.
It just is a little annoying that all references to women on slashdot are about porn or Janet Reno.
