RSI is very real, unfortunately. A friend of mine who types a lot had a very bad case of it - could not use his hands virtually at all for months without intense pain, tendons were swollen, and was almost a year on a wrist brace before it went away completely. This is a programmer who loves to write code, not a poor data-entry guy so he could take breaks, but the RSI came on so quickly there wasn't a thing he could do to mitigate it.
Personally speaking, I sometimes stress my fingers (being a programmer and a fast typist), and ocassionally I'll do something that hurts the rest of the day, but that is *NOT* RSI. RSI is serious stuff.
