  1. Flip side of coin on The Silent Kernel Platform War? · · Score: 1

He basically says that Linus is ignoring the patches from the people working on the PPC side of the kernel

So Linus is holding off on a patch, big deal. Look how long it took 2.4 to come out, I don't buy that "Linus is holding out" comment. If Linus held out its probably because he's tied up with so many things and for the weight of the entire Linux project to be held on his shoulders is enough to make the typical person yank their hair out.

So if these patches are so detrimental to the advancement of it all, then why wait for Linus, code em yourself or have some other developers assist in the matter, a patch is not an OS and wouldn't require the amount of time as doing a complete kernel revsion so who does this guy think he's fooling. It seems to be more of an animosity based comment than one that would question Linus' integrity.

  2. Hardcore techies on Maxtor's "Sturdy" Hard Drive · · Score: 1

This would be beneficial to the hardcore engineers like architects in construction sites, auto engineers, or even the not so hardcore geek whose laptop takes a battering.

Although its smaller in space than what we normally hear a late break news story about, I personally don't see the hooplah on this story. Panasonic has a harcore laptop which is capable of being run over by an SUV without being affected, although I wouldn't benchmark my own Panasonic with those tests if I had that model, its really not such new news after all.

  3. more on creator... on Massive Storage Advances · · Score: 1

Professor Ted Williams, Emeritus Professor of Electronic Engineering at Keele University, Staffordshire, England has developed a patented solid state memory system with the capacity of 86 Giga Bytes per square centimetre of surface area. The system uses a magneto-optical system not dissimilar to that of CD-ROM, except that the system is fixed, solid state, and has a different operating approach.

The system has applications for computer and processor memory for credit cards and smart cards, and for high security bank notes, among many other uses.

In computer memory format, the system has a capacity per sq cm in excess of 86 Giga Bytes of re-writeable RAM data - this equates to a memory capacity of 3400 Giga Bytes(3.4 Tb) within the surface area of a credit card! Data access time is around 100 Mb/sec. A single unit with this capacity, but using the computer's processor, has a physical size of about 3 cm x 3 cm x 1.5 cms (high). An additional advantage over existing data storage systems is that only 20% of gross capacity needs to be allocated for error correction, which is significantly less than the 40% for hard disks and 30% for optical storage.

  4. developmental on Wilfredo Sanchez Leaves Apple · · Score: 2

One developer leaving would not affect the continuity of an entire Operating System as it is often a team of developers who create it and not a sole entity. Recall when Steve left Apple, it was not the end of the world for Apple and they did well for their core audience.

Developers who leave may hinder a faster progress date but they would not jeapordize a project. Think about it you have a team of developers who work on a project and any company who would be moronic enough to have a sole person in charge of the whole thing would be ludicrous. People come and go daily in Sillycone Valley, yet you don't see companies falling as fast.

"'While we prefer to resolve these types of disputes without litigation, we felt we have no other choice but to assert our intellectual property rights in courts. In addition to filing the lawsuits, Sunonwealth has sent major computer and electronic equipment manufacturers and distributors letters demanding that they cease and desist from infringing Sunonwealth's patents.'

Sure its nice to poke fun at what may seem as minimal as a fan after all, you could just open up your case, slide it next to an air conditioner or create your own jigsawed case with multiple fans blowing from all sides.

Fact: this company has every right to sue since they have the patents over the product.

Fact: they did try to resolve it without resorting to going the legal route which did not work.

Fact: ADDA has created a 'misleading public record' of the patent case filed against ADDA

If it were your own thought which someone was stealing and you were losing money you would be just as upset, so why parody the company for being concerned over what ALL companies underlying factor is business.
