  1. Midair collisions on Spectrum Wars: The Hidden Battle · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think one of the problems we will start seeing before long is interference. With more and more people/devices crowding into a static amount of space (until more of the spectrum is released) it is bound to get a little bumpy. How long until your wireless network won't work when you sign on to your local wireless "last-mile" provider?

  2. mini-version on New LED Backlights For LCD Screens · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think this would make a very cool addition to a mobile mp3 player. Instead of the little screens they have now, we can get some larger ones with better GUIs, due to much lower power usage.

  3. At Last on New FreeBSD Book Aimed At Newest Users · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think this is just what the general public needs. Most of the 'into' *nixish books assume a general command line background, if even DOS. Many of the younger geeks have not been exposed to DOS or a command line in general. If there is a book they can read through and gather background knowledge, in easy to understand format, that will be at help to them, at least.

So when the new code, banjo, goes live, do we have to change 'free as in beer', to 'free as in moonshine' ?

  5. All about money.. on Letting The Market Choose Decent Broadband · · Score: 1

From what I can see, regulation could only directly affect prices. While they might try to order the bells to provide a more reliable service, I don't really think it would happen. If the bells are trying to kill out all other competition so they can jack prices in the future, that is a "Bad Thing", but I don't think that government regulation will help what plagues DSL most, reliability.

  6. To Each His Own on Will Open Source Lose the Battle for the Web? · · Score: 1

Looking at Apache vs IIS, I don't think there is a lot to worry about. From the average user's viewpoint, Linux is a server OS, and Windows is a desktop OS. I don't think normal people will run Linux on their desktop's anytime soon, nor do I think that the majority of people will operate Windows based servers. Of course there are always expections. But of all of the Open Source projects, I think Apache will be the last to go.

  7. Re:Offended by money? on Acknowledging Great Free Software · · Score: 1
Your expectation that people, who tip, actually do this to gain special treatment for their contribution is exactly what offends people..

That isn't what I mean't to imply. I was trying to say that if I were given a tip, then later that person tried to use that tip as a bargining agent to get something special, that that would bother me. Most people don't think like that, thankfully, and I have no problem saying a big 'Thank You' to those that send money with nothing more in mind that simply showing gratitude.

  8. Re:Offended by money? on Acknowledging Great Free Software · · Score: 1

What I meant was that if someone sends me money, purely as a tip, says "Thanks, doing a great job" then comes back a few days later and says he now wants a new feature, and that he paid for it, that is when I would be offended. By all means, if I was approached and told "I will give you X amount of money for Y feature, can you do it?" I would not be offended at all.

  9. Re:hmm on IETF on DRM, Internet Faxing · · Score: 1

I use my old modem as a fax machine now. Since I have a broadband connection, I don't need the modem, and its a lot more cost effective (ie cheaper) to use an old modem than go buy another device that just takes up space.

  10. Offended by money? on Acknowledging Great Free Software · · Score: 5, Insightful

Having developed a bit of free software, I don't think any of us would be offended by money. However, if you expected to be treated specially for your contribution, then I might be offended. But if was purely a contribution without asking for special treatment, then by all means, send it along.

I found this link which looks to be the same type of thing, only a lot smaller. It's priced at 20k, and would fit easily in a normal sized room.
