So... the end user is going to effectively pay to run your patch? These cards are not free.
If the company were to send out the hardware for the patches to the users, it would effectively count as a recall (and new ROM media would probably just be cheaper).
If the patch file memory card came with the game, what if the capacity for patching were exceeded by the patches?
Diffs in compiled binaries can be extensive, even for minor logical changes.
A claim that this would only be a problem with shoddy software would be a fallacy, since this system is intended to serve as the contingency plan. This system presumes shoddiness-- it should account for such.
Perhaps this system could be cobbled together, but it seems like it would be prone to becoming part of the "nightmare trainwreck".
Aha! However, no entity has a 'right' for their revenue model to be successul. If I were to block slashdot ads--and therefore they were denied income--it is not an ethical (or even moral) problem for anyone involved.
Since I am not under contract regarding their revenue model when I read slashdot, I am not bound to ensure they make money. This is the heart of entreprenurial success: the business owner has to ensure that their income model is practical and profitable.
Your perspective leads to the network pigopolists claiming that I am stealing if I watch a show and flip channels during a commercial. What if they made their commercials interesting to watch, instead?
In summary: "the success of their revenue model is their problem, not mine."
How about reality: $Priorities="Traffic Enforcement"
It would be nice if police did decide to have some semblance of a rational prioritization of infractions. So, if 'identity theft' is too piddling an issue for law enforcement to bother handling, why should having a broken tail light consume their 'precious' time?
Obviously YMMSV (your mileage may significantly vary), but the so-called "smart drugs" may improve your prognosis.
As a partially tangential aside, you may recall the media coverage for Provigil, the drug that allows non-jittery wakefulness for up to 48 hours, without dependency issues or major side effects. Provigil is a trade name for the chemical modafinil, which is Schedule IV in the US and requires a prescription.
Adrafinil -trade name Olmifon- is the precursor drug to modafinil, and it has the benefit of remaining unscheduled and uncontrolled in the US. It also has the same effect as modafinil: adrafinil is metabolized into modafinil by the body. Adrafinil also costs about 20% of an equivalent dose of modafinil. Quite exciting (just watch the potential liver side-effects)...
I have yet to locate a US supplier of adrafinil; I suspect this is largely due to the lack of FDA approval.
This is a rather bleak view to take on the upgrade cycle, but the migration of expansion buses such as the ISA->PCI->PCI Express progression has led to the case where the hobbyist cannot practically interface with their computer's expansion bus. At ISA's speed (and simplicity of interface), if one were to become inspired and driven, a prototype could be constructed to interface directly to the computer. Real computer engineering, at home, without the multi-million dollar lab. Now, the complex protocols and high speeds of transmission preclude such boards (in all practicality) due to impedance parasitics, cross-talk, ringing, dynamic IRQ assignment, etc. Just sort of requires one to have fab facilities and a team of technicians to do anything interesting in this regard.
I am not bitter, I am just an undergraduate computer engineer sort of sad, because if I ever have the capability and inspiration to prototype some sort of device on my own, it will never interface with my current desktop's PCI-style bus at the time.
I was a software development engineer intern with Microsoft last summer. As is tradition, there was one evening during the summer when Gates interacted with the interns and fielded questions from the floor. A fellow intern and I decided to inquire as to Microsoft's position on intellectual property rights in light of the peer to peer phenomena and Microsoft's recent shift of emphasis to service/subscription based revenue models.
Gates was very clear in his support for hardware level DRM as an industry standard (and not just on PCs). He indicated that it was necessary for IP protection and that Microsoft was going to spearhead DRM initiatives.
Conclusion: do not expect much support from MS in the fight to protect fair use.
It seems apparent that the scanning range on the device is limited by its passive design; however, consider the possibilities which abound if these become ubiquitous identification devices--bombs programmed to detonate only upon decoding the correct (supposedly unique) ID, etc.
Want a confirmed kill? Seems reasonable... assassination devices could be implanted in everyday items or places, merely waiting for the intended target to enter proximity. This could open a whole new world for precision, stand-off assassination!
This is not necessarily exploiting a flaw in standard meter designs at all-- this can actually be increasing the efficiency of the effective power load.
The most efficient load for power transfer purposes is the "simple" load (purely resistive). However, the effective load presented by your house is actually comprised of a multitude of devices (everything you are running), and these are not always purely resistive. If the effective load is skewed toward the inductive or capacitive, adding the opposite load "corrects" the issue by causing the complex portion to cancel, mitigating your phase shift and maximizing your efficiency. For example, industrial facilities with large inductive loads will place capacitors in parallel with their effective load to increase efficiency.
Power companies do notice transmission losses caused by large phase-shifted load facilities and increase their billing accordingly.
If you are contracting your business to an illegitimate firm (in any country), the results received
are your just desserts.
It seems absurd to correlate the actions of individuals to state-sponsored jurisprudence.
China is a member of WIPO, which corroborates the idea that widespread piracy is not condoned
by the legal system. Considering recent raids by government agencies in China to shut down major
manufacturers/distributors of illegitimate software, the Chinese government may beg to differ with
your opinion that Chinese corporations are pirates as well.
The rather xenophobic nature and sweeping generalizations of your statement will not be addressed
other than noting they are logical fallacies.
You are entitled to your view of zero-sum economics (in order for one state to "win", another state must
"lose"). However, most of the free world started to abandon this as a fundamental tenet in the
late 18th century. This has led to the disavowal of mercantilism, imperialism, and colonial
exploitation witnessed in the modern era. The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith is the both the
initial and seminal explanation of this concept.
Please do not be confused: my point is not encourage or discourage outsourcing development to China--I would merely like to see cogent arguments tendered in the debate rather than mere FUD.
