    No there is a federal ban on betting on sporting events using the telephone. Courts have already ruled that it doesn't apply to casino style games on the internet.

    Yes I would encourage everybody to write their district representatives, state senators and the governor. But even if the petition doesn't change the mind of anybody in power, it still allows people to see the scale of support and plan further actions.

    That's not really true, for the market to increase in value on average then more money must be coming in than is going out. A paper profit is no profit at all.

    This is washington. Prizes may not be awarded for any game where any of the variables is controlled by chance and is outside the control of the player.

    Like too many laws I don't think anybody really thought about it before they passed it. Both parties voted for it.

    Funny, the entire state government seems to run around pretending to be outraged every time the indians ask to open another casino too. Of course there's very little they can do to stop them.

    Thats the funny thing ... the law contains exceptions to allow a) the state to sell lottery tickets online and b) wagering on horse races.

    I've never been asked for any more information than is on the forms ... so apparently this doesn't apply to US residents.

    Last time I returned to the USA the Citizen / Resident lines were moving slower that the other ones. The problem seemed to be too many questions about where we'd been, what did we do, what did we bring back (this is immigration, not customs) and so on. The actual customs process took about 15 seconds after immigration.

    Realisticly, that's not going to happen. It's not like it's one way traffic - aircraft from the US fly to Europe too.

    Of course european countries could start demanding this information from Americans on arrival too .. or what about fingerprinting and photographing ? There's a limit to how far the US can go without making things too hard on ourselves.

    I was on a DC-10 last month which was struck by lightning on approach to Minneapolis airport. Apart from the obvious big blue spark and loud bang nothing else seemed to happen, the landing was otherwise uneventful.

    Huh ? so asking for one customers call records requires a pen register warrant but asking for everybody's call records does not ? A pen register does not involve interception or tapping of calls.

    Look at an I-9 form ... the employee gets to choose which documents he produces to meet the legal requirements. Employers who insist on particular documents are routinely prosecuted and fined.

    some of these "unassigned" numbers are used for non-resident taxpayer ID numbers ... before I lived here I had a 988 number.

    You can't be required to produce a social security card for a job. They can ask you for the number. Oddly enough this is an immigration regulation but it is the law. Google employment document abuse for more information.
