    Audio home recording act ... the one that requires cd recorders to include the Serial Copy Management System also allows copying for private use i.e. to play in the car, give to your friend etc.

    Leaving aside the question of whether you can make it stable or not, airport explosives sniffing equipment is designed for nitrogen based explosives .. which means that it probably isn't that easy to get it onto a plane. A key requirement of a liquid explosive to get onto a plane is that it not be detected.

    Airlines pay a fixed rate per pound for lost luggage so fill it up with bricks in case it gets lost.

    Given that in the past a person was booted off a plane for refusing to shut off his cellphone (which was really a lighter) I'm not confident in airplane mode keeping crews happy. I guess thats why they banned lighters now.

    In most states the cops can detain you for the purposes of issuing a traffic citation ... this falls under some kind of implied consent law i.e. you take a car on the road, you censent to certain actions by the police. Other than in the case of traffic laws, there is usually no right no detain a citizen without arresting them.

    Overpriced hardware ?

    I don't know what apple charges for the hardware because you can't buy a mac without OSX,iLife and a bunch of other bundled goodies. Certainly you get a lot more out of the box than you do with a generic windows box.

    I got one of those from the embassy in DC. The passport inspector in London said "This must be new, I haven't seen one of these before" and waved me through.

    Gaza is probably one of the least safe places for anybody to be. There's hundreds of countries to travel to where having an American passport will not get your head cut off.

    Re-entry heat is mostly about aerobraking from orbital speeds .. the SRBs separate fairly early while still in the atmosphere and travelling relatively slowlow - so while I'm sure there is some friction heat from the atmosphere it's nothing like what happens when you try and drop 20,000 mph by slamming into the upper atmostphere.

    If these people had their way, there would be illegal to go to the bathroom during TV commercials. They'd say you're stealing from ABC by watching the show and not the commercials.

    So thats why there's so many commercials for bladder control type products !!! :-)

    I can't be the only person this has happened to :

    Reinstalled windows from the CD that came with the computer, entered the OEM key off the sticker on the computer. The install goes perfectly.

    Then after installation I try to (re)activate windows and get a message saying "Your windows license key is invalid" and I'm prompted for a new one. WTF?!

    I remember one flight I was on in April, the info in the handy passenger information card said all business class seats were equipped with power outlets for laptops but that reclining your seat may cause a temporary disconnection of the power.

    huh ? My reply was to somebody who stated that the librarian should have just handed over the records because criminals have no right to privacy ... my point was that without a properly focused subpoena the privacy rights of the law abiding members of the library were on the line. I have no problem with the records being released in response to a proper subpoena.

    What about the privacy of the people who didn't commit the crime ? What if the next step from the police was to search every house in the city and then arrest the person who had this book, would you be up for that ?

    Disk is an abbreviation of diskette as in floppy. Disc is a flat round thing.
