  1. I'm doing (a warmer version) of this-- on Running a Server at Freezing Temperatures? · · Score: 1

I just did this a month or so ago. My experience is that, because of the generated heat, the computers are not the problem. I've only tested this down to maybe 45 degrees (F), but the problem I've been seeing is with my small network switch. Basically the garage disappears from the network every night between about 2 and 7 am... But so far it's always come back :)

  2. Re:Who would have thought? on The Joy of Random Shuffle · · Score: 1

The difference, though, is that with a five-disc changer you're shuffling maybe 100 tracks. With my iPod, I'm shuffling 4500. You can go weeks without a repeat.

  3. Track your children... or your employees... on Using the GPS Features on Cell Phones? · · Score: 1

This company is marketing a service (covered in this NYT article (cached at the IHT)) that tracks phones on which it's java app has been installed. The service is being marketed to parents and employers and allows access to the location information via a website. They'll also send email alerts whenever a phone travels outside a predefined set of boundaries (a "geofence"). Pretty cool.

With all due respect, I think you'll be positively stunned at how fast your sysadmin job can be moved off-shore.

The message of the article is nothing more than the globalization lesson many American blue-collar workers learned so painfully: If someone else can do what you do for cheaper (and in particular a lot cheaper), those workers will be more attractive to employers.

American white-collar workers would be stupid not to learn from that lesson. In this respect we are no different.

Find a way to provide value that is not available in cheaper labor pools and keep your job. Or don't and don't.

  5. Re:Maps too on Honeytokens: The Other Honeypot · · Score: 1

The concept here is putting insignificant fake data on a map. What you're saying is that you don't believe the particular example (a fake road) is insignificant (and I think many people, including me, would agree). But the concept is still viable-- just pick better (more insignificant) data to fake-- any label will do...

Yes but that provides an easy way to DDos a competing buisness: just post the number somewhere

Yah. The problem here is that the state is accusing, convicting and punishing the criminal without he/she ever getting a chance provide a defense. They are assuming that the posted phone numbers belong to criminals because (presumably) they are the ones that benefit most from the posting.

This (I think) is sort of similar to the problems that were raised with using cameras to spot traffic violations. Early on, the cameras would record the license number of a violator (who had, for example, run a red light) and the send the registered owner of the car a ticket. The problem is/was that the violation was commited by a driver who wasn't necessarily the owner of the car.

I think the police solved this problem by photographing both the license plate and the driver-- the photo of the driver can be compared to an existing photo of the registered owner. If they match, ticket time...

Given these problems, would government phone-bombing be allowed here (in the US)?

If you feel you will be getting more of these, put together a LLC if you have one other friend also contracting. Two employee make for a group health plan under California law.

Actually, many large companies (including mine) are even more restrictive-- not only do they require a contractor to work for a shell company, the shell company needs to be on a (usually short) list of approved vendors.

Forming your own shell doesn't solve this...

IBM's entire suite of database (and related) tools are written in Java. Of course IBM has huge incentive to give its customers a non-Windows alternative. Java provides that alternative-- the tools suite runs on *nix as well.
