It is ridiculous that "free" software, which could save $10,000 - $20,000, would possibly have even the littlest effect on a multimillion dollar company. What, is it going to avoid the layoff of a quarter of a person a year? Go team! Get real guys.
And besides, isn't the free in free software suppose to be free as in speech and not free as in beer? In that case it would have no effect on the economic future of any company.

Where did #2 go?
Doesn't "April, 02, 2001" equal 04-02-01?
Don't you mean "Slashdot April Fool's edition sucks this year"? Last time I checked addition was a mathmatical operation.
You should be modded as a hypocrite, not a troll. Oh well. At least you spelled grammar correctly.
I'd say that if the maintainers of Slashdot insist on making an event out of April Fools, next year they should simply link to other websites that actually have funny April fools pranks. Oh, and without the pretense of it being real either. That would actually be useful.
It's my opinion that the majority of people here (95%) don't hate Microsoft, aren't very evanglistical, and probably use Windows with some frequency. Most of them are just afraid to speak up, or lie because they're karma whores.
The article mentions it's written in assembly, so it would run on any x86 compatible processor including Intel, AMD, Cyrix, etc. Sun, PowerPC and the rest would be ok if the article is correct.
I don't understand what all the outrage about the "V-Chip" is. This seems like a positive step, it gives a parent more options in terms of monitoring their childrens TV usage. It's not like anyone under 18 has rights anyway... I don't think it's very effective of a tool, but it's not bad either.
Besides, in two years or so when people realize that teen violence hasn't gone down as a result of this device, people would start to realize that it's no replacment for just talking to their kids. It's one of those things that'll just need fail before people realize it won't work.
But, original point being, no harm is done to anyone by trying.
Bender (talking in his sleep): "kill all humans.. kill all humans..."
Fry: "whoa.. what did you just say??"
Bender (wakes up): "oh.. what? fry?? I just had the most wonderful dream, you were in it..."
That's the ironic part about all of this. Youth violence (and in fact, violent crime in general) are at all time lows. Deaths from handguns amoung youths has dropped (including school schootings). The only thing that has increased in the media coverage of such events.
Oh, so you'd prefer to hide the fact that Slashdot is one sided? I think it's a bit too late for that. Being onesided doesn't bother me (this is a linux site, afterall), but the ignorance of some of the news articles is frustrating at times.
I would fall over of a heart attack if I ever read an unbaised, unslanted, completely fair and fully researched article about either Microsoft or AOL on Slashdot. Attitudes like that should be saved for the message board. I wish Hemos, Michael and co. would at least pretend to be unbaised, it would contibute greatly to the reputation of this site.
Hmm.. and I'd probably get a pretty bad headache if I saw hints of journalistic integrity, too.
Well.. I hate to break it to you, but *every* company follows similar accounting schemes to that of Microsoft. Including Red Hat, I'm sure. Everyone knows it, and no one cares.
The article you're linking is written by one of those completely insane alarmists.. The same guys running around claiming the government is hiding aliens and has everyones phone tapped and a hidden video camera in every TV, etc..
Why are you so angry man? Did the CEO of Corel steal your girlfriend or something?
Wow, you people take this way too seriously. The company made a buisness decision.. they don't have the evangilistic zeal that the rest of you do. Common sense prevails. Live with it.
Have you people considered that maybe AOL just made some minor changes to their protocol, and this was just a result? Everyone is (as usual) assuming that AOL is an evil villian without even contacting them to see what they have say about it.
That's not to say that this probably isn't the case, but as far as the "journalistic" integrity goes.. Did anyone at Slashdot even consider contacting AOL for a comment, like a real news site would?
1. You can't simply switch to another local phone company, and
2. You're paying the phone company for a service.
AIM is free. AOL is operating AIM at a cost to them, and they can do whatever they want. You are more than welcome to use any other IM service you'd like. Nothing is stopping you from using AOL's client. You might say.. "well I shouldn't be forced into using the AOL client..", well, you're not being forced to use AIM, are you?
The only people, er.. well, the only 25 million people who have a right to even slightly complain are the paying AOL users who are no longer able to chat with people AOL is excluding. They're paying for the service. And even then, nothing is stopping them from signing on to Jabber or some other IM service, sending an email, or.. of course picking up a telephone.
When I read through 200 posts of the same, irrational, zealous arguements I get sick to my stomache. Why do you people believe that AOL owes you anything?
I'm pretty disgusted that Slashdot is posting this story as well for a number of reasons,
1) Slashdot basically just linked this guys entire ICQ conversations with everyone for the past year. 90% of this stuff is irrelivant. So much for being pro-privacy, huh?
2) Slashdot seems to be getting involved in a petty fight between a couple of emulation sites, who cares? How is this "News for News" or "Stuff that matters"? It's petty bullshit.
3) The heavy slant in the story
Michael, how would you like it if the log from every chat converastion you've ever had was posted to the web, including private business conversations (names, phone numbers, fianance numbers are discussed) and off color jokes you've made (raping someone? i'm sure we've all said worse when we're under the pretense that we're talking privately among friends).
A story like this has no place on slashdot. I'm disgusted and lost what was left of my respect for this place.
Just about every losing country in every major conflict in history were required to pay reparations. Look at the news, Germany is still paying for WW2 to this day.

The other 5% just happens to be much louder.
The article mentions it's written in assembly, so it would run on any x86 compatible processor including Intel, AMD, Cyrix, etc. Sun, PowerPC and the rest would be ok if the article is correct.
Don't you think you're over reacting a bit buddy? Man, you need to calm down and take a deep breathe. The world isn't ending.
;)
Besides, there are *dozens* of more reasons to be ashmed to be associated with canada than the V-Chip..

Yeah.. Who knew that little harmless lowtax could start an internet phenomenon. I'd be gloating a lot more if I were him.
hahahah...

Man, you guys like to pick on Microsoft.

That's an irrelevant analogy because...
1. You can't simply switch to another local phone company, and
2. You're paying the phone company for a service.
AIM is free. AOL is operating AIM at a cost to them, and they can do whatever they want. You are more than welcome to use any other IM service you'd like.
