  1. Linux already does these.. on Big Guns Unite To Unify Unix · · Score: 1

And NetBSD/OpenBSD run on even more than Linux. :)

  2. SCO and legacy on Big Guns Unite To Unify Unix · · Score: 2
There are an awful lot of systems out there that (still) run SCO. (I've had to admin some of them. Yeech.)

The reason why they stay with SCO and don't move to another OS, even if they want to, is that their custom applications work on SCO, are only guaranteed to work on SCO, and (most importantly) are only _supported_ under SCO.

Never underestimate the power of legacy to shape current needs.

  3. Linux needs more critics. on Open discussion of Linux Limitations · · Score: 1

More specifically, Linux needs more critics who are able to get the zealots to listen to them without kneejerking.

There are many things I find distasteful or downright wrong about Linux, but as soon as I open my mouth to compare them to things that other OSes have (say, BeOS or MacOS), the 'linux weenies' will immediately stop listening to anything that's said of substance.

The community needs to accept criticism better...
and accept that maybe, just maybe, software that's come before Linux has something useful in it.

  4. DJ Shadow doesn't need fake ass records on Scratching MP3s with a real turntable · · Score: 1

Er, you don't seem to be getting it.

Have you ever tried to carry boxes and boxes of records around? It sucks.

Having the same physical interface, and only having to lug two or three boxes around is what it's all about.

  5. Torture-testing the moderation policy on Assorted Slashdot Changes · · Score: 1

I think that the moderation system will prove itself (or go down trying) when the next flamefest starts - probably something on the order of 'foo is not open source; therefore it sucks' or 'OSes other than linux suck'.

If reasonable discussion manages to poke its head out from one of those subjects, you'll know that the system works.

(I just hope that sufficiently many moderators are willing to poke their way through the morass of Anonymous Coward postings to highlight the ones worth reading.)
