  1. From the Dark Ages on What Was Your First Gaming Experience? · · Score: 1

My first computer gaming experience was in High School (1970) on a field trip to Bell Labs. They showed us one computer that was running their home grown space war: 2 ships on the screen with thrust, rotate left/right, and fire buttons. The ships popped into space on each side of the screen and (if you didn't start thrusting) fell into the sun.

The Bell Labs guys said that this was not an actual project, just something they did for fun but they had a signup list to play at lunch that was a mile long.

I was already interested in computers but that clinched it.

  2. another vote for balance on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 1

I also vote for a balance between technology and nature. My kids are 24 and 20 and both are computer savvy but both also decided 8 years ago that they would rather spend time at a cottage on a lake in Maine (with no TV or phone but lots of books) than go to Disney World.

We ended up returning to Maine almost every summer until the youngest was out of High School. Fab fun for the whole family! My wife and I both enjoy hiking and boating and when we went to Maine, we totally left the technological world behind.

I think that's the key. As others have said, the kids will be interested in what you are interested in, so go have fun.

  3. What can one do to forward the cause? on Ask FSF General Counsel Eben Moglen · · Score: 5, Interesting

I think that the FSF is very important and I want to assist but I have my own situation to deal with as well. I would like to make a difference and am seeking the most effective way to do that.

You are donating your time/knowledge. What are other ways to help?

Specifically, What is the single best thing a supporter can do to help. In other words What does the FSF need most that we might be able to supply?
    o Money
o Volunteers (with what skills?, to do what?)
    o Publicity
o Subject Matter Experts (what subjects?)
    o Something else I can't imagine?

    Thanks.

  4. Re:5.01*5.02-5.03/2.04... on Electronic Life · · Score: 1

It bothered me that bc and windows did not match. So I looked into question. the -126.7... answer is correct so the bc calculation must be doing something strange. It is not carrying the precision through the entire calculation. BUT IT WILL if you ask it to:

    sos:/bdfs/users/rdm2$ time echo '(5.01*5.02)-(5.03/2.04)*100.5+3.06+20.07-200.08+( 300.09/1.10)' |bc -l
    -126.79217967914438502588

    real 0m0.03s
    user 0m0.00s
    sys 0m0.04s
    sos:/bdfs/users/rdm2$

bc is arbitrary precision but you need to tell it to do more (thus the -l option)

  5. Re:Of course on Compulsory Licensing for Online Music? · · Score: 1

I agree that the CREATOR of the art/music should be able to control the distribution.

What is happening here is that the MUSIC COMPANIES are doing the controlling. Artists could probably make a good deal more money from their art if they could sell directly to the BUYING public.

Suppose there is a replacement for Napster that will pay a royalty to the owner of a song and the Artist is the owner. I for one would be willing to pay a reasonable price for music under these circumstances.

The MUSIC COMPANIES realize this and wish to prevent the technology/distribution network that will wipe them out from forming.
