You do realise that in doing that you were putting your company and more importantly yourself at great risk? In the (admittedly unlikely) event that someone reported you for using unlicensed software, your company would have been liable to lose a lot of money, and in turn they would most likely have sued you as you installed the software, and if you were in a position to install software on a server then it was most likely also your responsability to make sure all the software was also legit, licensed, etc. Like I said, this scenario is fairly unlikely, but here in the UK I have seen adverts offering rewards for employees to grass up their employer's to organisations such as FAST (Federation Against Software Theft) if they suspect that they are using unlicensed software.
Think about, Win32 didn't exist, Yeah it did. Microsoft just hadn't publically released it yet. Really? That would imply some sort of long term design. I always thought that Windows was some terrible ancient curse. See, the way I heard it, Gates was using his newfound wealth from DOS & Windows 3 to steal treasures of the ancient world. He had managed to locate the exact position of the fabled Pandora's box, and after a hefty struggle, he managed to get his hands on it. Of course he couldnt resist opening it and upon doing so an evil demon was released and cast a shadow over Redmond, and thus, Win32 was born.
Amiga were fighting with Atari. Atari had been dead for five years at this point. I'm sure Atari the company didnt die until the early 90's. I have fond memories of regularly using my ST all the way upto 92, then I got my hands on my first PC and, well......
You have not used OSX, have you? And neither have the majority of actual Mac owners, I suspect.
Its an issue of standardisation. If the standard mouse that comes with a Mac only has one button, then you write your programs to only use one button. If you didnt you'd get angry tech support calls along the lines of 'why does the manual tell me to click the right mouse button when my new Mac only has one button??'. This becomes a viscious circle, because if you only use one mouse button in all your programs, why bother getting a mouse with more than one button? Sure, I can imagine gamers make a new mouse their first purchase after getting their new shiny Mac (Quake with a single mouse button anyone??), but most people dont so the majority of applications only use one button.
Oh, and as for the 'how many of you use the that came with your computer?'. Well, 2 things: 1) My entire system is custom built, put together by me, moi, myself. I still use about 90% of the original componants from when I bought it 18 months ago. The reason that I didnt get a prebuilt system is because I *knew* that I'd throw away half the componants straight away. 2) One of the main reasons for someone to buy a Mac is because its all there. You dont need to buy anything else, its just a box that you dont open and is easy to use. You upgrade by getting a new machine. Explaining to someone who thinks like that when buying a computer that they should get a new keyboard/mouse/whatever so that they can get a better computing experience, well, dont bother. Just dont.
Whilst many people think that the BBC is the bastion of fair and balanced reporting, these days thats becoming less and less the case. Its happening especially so in tech news where they appear to try to simplify subjects to the point that they become factually incorrect in many places, I point to this article as an example. On the TV news the BBC appears to be putting more and more spin on the news that it reports. A good example of this is the whole Spencergate fiasco (that girl who got refused for Oxford). They continually use the phrase 'class war', and even though they have given people from Oxford a chance to have their say, they always manage to put a pro-lab/anti-ox spin on the whole affair.
Thats just one issue that has bugged me about the BBC as of late. When some new big story comes along im sure they'll spin it in a distasteful (to me, at least) fashion. Its nowhere near as bad as american news, but I feel as though the BBC should be completly impartial in all matters, something which it hasnt been doing as of late.
I wonder if its possible for me to get even more offtopic in this post? I dont think I'll bother. I think I'll find something to cure the brainfreeze from a McFlurry followed by a milkshake instead....
Thats good advice. I ran into that when I was installing RH6.1 on my dual P3 533 w/256MB RAM (the motherboard is a Supermicroft PIIIDM3 for those of you that are interested). Whilst configuring the box I just happened to have 'top' running and noticed that it thought it only had 128MB of RAM. A quick edit of lilo.conf, reinstallation of lilo and a reboot later, I was good to go with all my RAM =).
This is serious horseshit. To the right of me I have a copy of The Matrix on CD, its about 400MB and it is nowhere near DVD quality. Maybe your on a teeny tiny moniter or something, but I cant actually stand to watch that version of The Matrix after seeing the DVD. There are loads of (what appear to be) compression artifacts everywhere and the picture lacks detail. Also, the sound quality sucks compared to the DVD. Probably not noticable at all on most of those crap PC speakers that get shipped with systems, but kinda noticable when you've forked out for a meaty home theatre style speaker setup.
In short, Windows Media doesnt compare to DVD *at all*. Its about comparable to RealVideo, even then Real has better sound quality.
Um, any OpenGL app that uses the OGL T&L pipeline automagically uses hardware T&L the moment you plug in a 3D card that has that capability (oh, and as long as the drivers are smart enough to go "oh look, we can do this in hardware, lets not bother with software", which is useually the case once you've plumped for a nice hardware accellerated board). Why do you think Q3 gets such a benefit on the GeForce boards? Its because it uses the OGL transform pipeline (although not lighting, unless you opt for vertex lighting in the options which actually produces a speed decrease on geforce boards, because of the extra load on the chip IIRC. And it looks worse because you dont get all the extra effects that the Q3 engine does with the lightmaps or something).
As for development of the API in general, well, any card vendor can implement an extension in thier drivers. If there is an obvious need for that extension in general then a majority of card vendors will implement similar extension and eventually someone will come up with a version of that extension that is acceptable to the ARB and it will get accepted as an 'official' OGL extension and included as a feature of the next release of OGL. I personally think thats a much more democratic way of developing the API then Microsoft's approach where they basically dictate what goes into the API, although to be fair that situation has improved a lot recently. I do think its a good thing that Sweeny has DirectInput to DirectX (sorry for the awful pun =P), after all, good developer communications makes for a better API for everyone.
I remember seeing an item on the news here in the UK about some new figures for retail theft. I dont remember exactly, but it was somewhere between 1/5 and 1/4 of all theft in shops was down to staff. Thats a pretty sizeable amount by anyones standards.
Then you have a problem for services such as ICQ. If you block incoming packets, how are you supposed to recieve messages? I'm sure there are other examples, ICQ is just the obvious one that springs to mind.....
I have a P2 400 overclocked to 448, 128MB RAM with a Creative 16MB TNT. I recently got a hankering to play Half Life again, after an age of not playing it. In 1024*768 I'm easily pulling 30fps.
I cant hope to achieve that performance in Linux, mind you, as the readme that came with the glx drivers states. The drivers are not optimised, they are for developmental purposes only and Linux will only reach the same level of 3D graphics performance when XF86 4.0 with DRI comes out.
Personally I find the lack of 32bit colour on 3Dfx cards to be a crime. At most I have found a TNT to be 2 or 3 fps slower than a Voodoo 2 (which is a 3D card in the same class) in any given game, but it has a vastly improved level of image quality.
Oh, and on a more on-topic note, this is good news indeed. My birthday is just around the corner so I should be picking up a 32MB GeForce DDR. I might get an extra 128MB RAM aswell, just because prices have come back down and you can *never* have enough RAM.
Would you please care to explain your logic here? I took a look at the Qt customer list and couldnt find any evidence that jetson123 was a customer of TT. Perhaps you would care to show otherwise?
With your reference to Microsoft being one of the companies being driven by a college drop out, I assume you mean Bill Gates. He didnt actually drop out of Harverd, he actually took a 'leave of absence' and has yet to return. That was the one new thing I learnt from that interview with Jeremy Paxman and Bill Gates. The rest of it was trash. Paxman managed to avoid asking *any* direct hard hitting questions, honestly one of the worst interviews hes ever done. Sorry for going slightly off-topic there =)
Here in the UK the age of consent is 16. I think that this is much, much more suitible than 18, at least for our culture, as most people end up having sex for the first time at the age of 16/17 anyway. Also, quite a few girls do go for 'older' guys, its not unuseual for a 16 y/o girl to go out with, or at least sleep with, someone who is in their early 20's or so. Not to mention the 14/15 year old girls who go out every weekend fully tarted up looking like they are 18 trying to pick up older guys.
Back to the issue at hand, if the guy was honestly intending to screw a 13 year old then he is guilty of *something*, but if he honestly thought that it was just a fantasy and it was really a bored housewife willing to let him spank her and tell her what a bad girl she is, then thats just fine. It appears to be the former, but it could very well be the latter. Who is to say what goes on in the mind of someone else?
FYI here in the UK we did ditch our 'lazy-assed State-run teleco'. We instead replaced it with a lazy arsed privately run telco monopoly who screws us out of every penny they can. BT has enough resources to implement broadband services such as ADSL, but wont because, well, its not as profitable to give people faster cheaper net access when they make lots of money by giving us slow overpriced net access. Meh, now I need to relax, just my pet rant =P
Well, if they moderate posts to appease the majority of meta-mod's, then surely they are also appeasing the majority of/. readers? After all, the mods are selected from the readers, and I thought that was the point of moderation. To remove the crap that the majority of people dont care to read. If they are getting rid of that, then whatever their personal opinion they are doing a good job at moderation. Besides, I think its bad form to let personal opinion get in the way whilst moderating and I think (or at least hope) that the majority of/. readers who meta-mod would work to stop unpopular opinions from being stifiled.
Just because someone has a lack of proper grammer/spelling abilities doesnt make them a troll. Maybe there should be a 'Spelling/Punctuation/Grammer' score to go with the moderation score. Anyone who manages to get themselves down to -1 should be sent a friendly email with some URL's where they can improve thier english =).
I'm sorry, but I beg to differ on this. Yes, I know its probably not entirely IE5's fault that whenever it crashes it causes me to hard reboot, it probably has more to do with those blue screens I get once every few weeks telling me that 'my windows configuration is invalid', advising me to reinstall. Either way, I dont like having a browser pause on a webpage and stop my system. IMO, a browser simply shouldnt be tied that deeply into the OS.
Well, you can get away with using MD as a cheap way of getting things from the studio to your home setup and vice versa. Any serious work that your planning to master should still be done on DAT, but theres no real reason why you shouldnt use MD as a cheap solution for everything else.
AFAIAA, we dont have any real freedom of speech here in the UK. The Queen has banned books about her that she didnt like in the past and still has the power to do so now AFAIK. Whilst anyone has that sort of power in a country, the country cannot be said to have freedom of speech.
Thought I was going insane, but I appear to have this problem aswell. I'm almost certain that I had an Emacs curser before I insalled this X server. Anyone got a solution to why the little curser that shows you where you're typing in Emacs whilst under X dissappears whilst not over text?
Wow, I was gonna post almost exactly the same thing but it looks like you beat me to it. I like, totally love nVidia for this, this means that I now actually have a free PCI slot as I can throw away that dusty ol' Voodoo 2 that I use for glQ(2) in Linux. And like, yay, they added more 2D acceleration, meaning that I get a day to day speedup aswell. Man, its only 3am and its already a good day =)
The MIDI support on this card is at least as good if not better than the AWE32/64 IMO. My sister uses it for all of her home studio setup under 'doze and it works very nicely along with Cakewalk to give a nice MIDI setup. I have on in this box aswell, I used to have an ISA card in here for sound in Linux, but I just ripped that out as this driver for the Live gives me all the audio capabilities I need for Linux (wave and CD Audio). Now, all I need is EAX support with this driver (I presume it doesnt have it....) and a few more games. Then I can get rid of that pesky Windoze partiton....
