I'm really getting tired of the one-sided posting here on Slashdot. You guys always word things to make capitalism sound bad and piracy/communism/free everything/anti-M$ as good.
Really slashdot, why can't you guys put a little more objectivity in your selection of stories and the way you word them in your introductions?
Or maybe someone at the top is pro-communist and is pusing that agenda and trying to brainwash/. users.
Sigh....

Ever since I discovered mp3's (even before the Napster days) I have not only stopped buying CD's completely, but I've also NOT gone inside a record store again. I used to love going to Tower Records with my girlfriend. Now we just download them on the net, share them, and burn them to CD.
Oh yeah by the way, ever since I discovered my bank was getting too greedy with their exhorbitant fees I've been going around robbing banks too. Napster fans you guys wanna go rob a bank with me some time since we all are using the same type of logic here?

The real issue is not what any survey says. It's about what rights a private company is entitled to.
They are entitled to control how, where, and when their properties are distributed.
They are entitled to commit suicide if they choose to.
They are entitled to make as much or as little money as they wish.
So whatever these moronic surveys say is irrelevent. There is a more important principle at play here: intellectual property rights. Their music belongs to them, NOT YOU! It doesn't matter if you grew up with the music, or that hearing a particular song is the only way to get you a boner. The songs belong to THEM, not YOU nor napster.
There are so many commies on slashdot these days it's not even funny.:(

The reason internet advertising has never been able to sustain the price levels as that of tv/magazines is that they're too small and too easy to ignore. Once we figure out how to serve captivating, rich, and un-ignorable ads (relatively speaking of course), internet ad spending will pick up and catch up to its offline siblings.
And to those who think we should have 0 ads and the that the net should be free from "evil" corporations, please... Just don't visit such sites. Stick to your newsgroups and napster.

A few years ago this jackass wrote a column and titled it something like "Get rid of evil cookies". Thanks to creeps like him, half the websites out there have to be redesigned to accommodate those paranoid users who cripple their browsers just so some "evil" cookie doesn't get them in the night.

Yeah that's right all you leechers. You wanted everything for free right? And then you wanted to block out ads and cookies right? You even want to leech free mp3's and not pay for them. Ok, now thanks to you people the internet is dying. Online advertising is fast becoming extinct, thanks to all you stingy bastards.
So now, to survive, web companies have to start chargine money. Gone are the days of cool innovation on the net, gone are all the cool freebies. You DESERVED it. Yes you do. The very internet that you love so much is now going after you wallet.
So, was all the ad ignoring worth it for you? Wait another 6 months hahaha!!!

Did you just fart? Or do you always smell like that?
I agree with you with regards to Napster, but your logic is off-base.
The purpose of government IS to represent the people at that moment in time. If people want a Holocaust, they will have it. If they want slavery, they will have that as well. Why do you think slavery in America was allowed in the past? Why do you think the Nazi's killed millions of Jews and got away with it? For sure it wouldn't happen in today's society, but that's because people's views are different today.
Civilization is very similar to organized crime. When you were born, you didn't have a choice as to which laws you felt like agreeing to did you? The majority have already decided it for you. Don't like it? Too bad. Do something they don't like? Go to jail or be executed.
Think for a moment. Why are we allowed to kill cockroaches but not people? Why do some countries allow for dog eating yet others have laws against it?
With that said, there are also varying levels of priorities we place in the way we make our government. More important priorities override less important ones. This is why we go to war at times. Yes life is precious and we execute murderers. But when our country is in jeopardy, we are allowed to carry guns to go and shoot as many people on the opposing side as possible.
Same with Napster. Even though a large percentage of the population may be using it, we still disallow it. Why? Because we, as a people, treasure intellectual property rights much more than free music and piracy. Joe Smith might be downloading tons of illegal mp3's, but when put on the spot, he will choose IP rights over free piracy any time.

This article is full of BS. Suppose you follow this guy's advice and compile the code from the source. How do you know the source doesn't contain a trojan within it? Yeah like people are going to do a line-by-line audit every time they upgrade/install a rpm.
Installing a binary rpm puts you at the same risk level as a source rpm, if downloaded from the same site. It's foolhardy for the author of that article to spread mis-information, making unsuspecting readers feel secure about something when in fact, the risk is still the same.

Did you just fart? Or do you always smell like that?
I'm glad some/.ers here share some of my views. I was fast becoming convinced that 99%+ of/.ers were communists unknowingly.
Communism looks very very good on paper and in theory. But the thing about theoretical concepts is that they often don't account for all the inconsistencies and other fallacies which make up for the REAL world. Human nature by default is one of selfishness. On the outside we smile and help others in need, but on the inside, we will always care about our own personal needs before we care about those of others. This is a FACT. To deny this fact or not acknowledge it you're only fooling yourself.
This is the biggest obstacle to Communism. It just can never work in real life. When everything belongs to everyone, which person will be willing to work extra hard to invent or create something? There will be some of course, but overall, there will be very little innovation. The best evidence of this can be seen from history. 99+% of this century's inventions/discoveries have been made by capitalist countries.
What I've been saying all along about mp3's is that it in fact does promote Communism. It tells us to disregard intellectual property. It tells us we NEED to all share everything freely and without cost. It tells us money is evil and that RIAA and the music artists don't deserve the millions of dollars they get for the measly few songs they sing/produce/market.
Such a message is very dangerous for future creativity and innovation. It threatens our future in ways many here just don't see. Close your eyes and imagine a world where everthing belongs to everybody without cost. It's like heaven right? Now inject human selfishness into it and see what your heaven really turns into. Do you see what I see? Laziness, lack of competition and encouragement, death of innovation, etc... Do you see it?
So... is the RIAA greedy? Yes they are, and perhaps they too greedy. But that's the price you have to pay for capitalism. It's about the survival of the fittest. Yes it means some will inevitably suffer because they can't compete. But it also means new technologies such as the internet, computers, software, music, medicine, space travel, etc... will continue to advance as rapidly as possible. What does the alternative hold for you? Do you have a better plan?

Amen to that. Look at my screen name on./. I hate religion as a whole because it promotes intolerance and weakness in people. It has been responsible for a lot of this world's suffering. One only needs to look around the world today to see the ill effects of religion. Things like abortion clinic bombings, gay bashing, kkk, etc...
I just don't get it. Everything nice and wonderful is HERE on earth right now, while you're still alive. Why do humans look for happiness in the afterlife, for things that most likely does not exist. Roe V. Wade did not become case law because of a majority of the population supporting it, it because case law because a majority of 9 judges supported it.
Yes and that's because we the majority have decided certain principles to be of higher priority. That is why the judges ruled in favor of abortion rights. They don't rule based on pure opinion. They rule based on existing laws we the people have set forth, and made their ruling based upon them.
Where is your proof that most of the members of our society are in favor of abortion on demand?
And where is your proof that the majority of this nation is against it?
Lastly, the constitution is designed to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.
Sorry pal, it is not. It is there to preserve order and to prevent giving anyone too much power. If you think for a minute that 1% of the people can make the 99.9% of the people do whateveer they want, you'd better think again. The truth is, society and civilization is a form of organized crime, if you'd like to look at it that way. When you were born, you had to agree to your country's laws and customs. It's not up to you to decide if you want to agree to it or not. That's mob rule, to say it in a negative way. But it's true. Think about this philosophically and you'll see that the entire planet is a "mob".
The way you think is totally just conforming to what this mob society wants you to think. You think it's somehow moral to not let abortions be legal. What is morality exactly? Morality is there only because we need to live together as a people in harmony. Its sole purpose is to serve as a social behavior that enable people to live cooperatively and constructively as opposed to destructively. Living destructively would mean chaos.

Kano, I think your thinking is screwed up. Everything in life is full of contradictions. We kill animals for food, yet we have laws against killing people. Why is that? It boils down to the simple fact that we do things that benefit us, and not do things that don't benefit us. It's that simple. We like abortion because we are a democratic nation where the majority rules. And as a people we have spoken and have said that we want to be pro-choice rather than anti-choice. Think about it, would you consider semen life? How about reproducing cells within your body? Well then where do you draw the line? Unless the baby becomes detached from the mom (born), it is still a fetus and is considered PART of the mother. If she chooses to remove it, that's her right, just as if you wanted to cut your nails, you could.
And lastly, what is a bigger priority to human culture? Democracy and the rule by majority, or lawlessness?

blair1q used the word "cartel" to describe their pact, making it sound like some illegal organized crime deal. The fact is, MLB is there to make money. People on the net only want to leech things for free and not listen to commercials. I'm sure MLB must be experiencing this, which is why they want to now charge money for the service, one that you can get for free on the radio.
I think a major factor for charging is the bandwidth cost. It costs them tons of money to support these thousands of hour-long listeners, something they'd avoid over the radio.
You see people. The "free everything fever" on the net is over. Reality is setting in. Too bad for all you leechers who just want free stuff and offer absofscking nothing in return for the hard work of the providers. Bah humbug!

All I see these days are a bunch of dorks who don't know what the fuck capitalism is all about. Aol created AIM and made it popular for heaven's sake. Now you want that to be completely opened up so other companies can leech of the success of Aol's hard work? Besides, it's FREE!! The ONLY reason other companies such as Yahoo and Micro$oft want AIM opened up is simple: they want to access Aol's millions of AIM users without paying a damn dime for it! M$ wants you to look at their ads with their IM client instead of Aol's.
Look at it this way. Most of you guys in here hate Micro$oft with a passion. Well whether you like it or not Aol IS the only M$ competitor out there right now. M$N couldn't kill off Aol, and their dum IM client can beat AIM. As long as there's a big enough competitor, both M$ and Aol will continue to innovate. Now isn't that for the better?

Look at what Micro$oft did with Java. When M$ was the small fish, they licensed Java from Sun and complied with all the standards. But as soon as they gained enough market share, they hijacked Java and created their own version called J++, which only runs on Windows machines.
M$ is doing the exact same thing here. They lay a trap. Get a whole bunch of people running competitor OSs to deploy it. Then after it gets popular they'll start hijacking everything so.net will only run best on Windows. Developers and businesses will be stuck and have no choice but to give in to the M$ hijack.
M$ keeps using the same damn trick over and over and over and over and over and over agin. Whoever the idiot is that'll fall for this deserves it!

If she chooses to remove it, that's her right, just as if you wanted to cut your nails, you could.
And lastly, what is a bigger priority to human culture? Democracy and the rule by majority, or lawlessness?

This is why I HATE all religions, especially Christianity. Throughout history, religions have been responsible directly and indirectly for the suffering and intolerance of many millions of people.
These morons over at the Nuremburg Files, who the fuck do they think they're helping by killing doctors? Screw these motherfucking religious morons. I'd say we should start a website that lists the addresses and photos of these abortion clinic bombers and murderers just to counteract their terrorist tactics.

blair1q used the word "cartel" to describe their pact, making it sound like some illegal organized crime deal.
Bah humbug!

This is a lame invention, one that'll only leave you with a neck-stress injury. Besides, it's so unnatural. When you look at stuff, you don't move your neck unless it's a few angles away. When you view your monitor, the only thing you move are your eyeballs. Study this yourself on your computer now.
Mother nature never created our necks to move this often. Having wrist problems is bad enough. We don't need neck braces and a bunch of people on the street behaving like robots when they look at stuff.

Yes this is what I see a lot here, people who think like communists. The irony is, I used to think like that too. I used to hate all businesses and think they're evil and greedy... Until I matured a bit more and realized that without these businesses and without compensation for one's work, capitalism turns upside down and nobody will innovate anymore.

Yes it's stupid people like you who expect everything in life to be free for you. Why don't you wake up and acknowlegde that it costs money to create stuff.
How about this... from now on you wake up, work 40 hours a week for me, and get paid $0?
It's people like you who love napster and should be deported to some communist country, since you see to love that sort of thing so much, you under-performing citizen.

EXACTLY!

But as soon as they gained enough market share, they hijacked Java and created their own version called J++, which only runs on Windows machines.
.net will only run best on Windows. Developers and businesses will be stuck and have no choice but to give in to the M$ hijack.
M$ is doing the exact same thing here. They lay a trap. Get a whole bunch of people running competitor OSs to deploy it. Then after it gets popular they'll start hijacking everything so
M$ keeps using the same damn trick over and over and over and over and over and over agin. Whoever the idiot is that'll fall for this deserves it!
